Reconstruction of the collateral ligaments of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb was performed for fourteen ruptures of the ulnar and two ruptures of the radial collateral ligament, one to eighteen months after injury. The extensor pollicis brevis tendon was used to reinforce the resutured ligament. Symptoms were relieved in all cases after follow-ups ranging from one to seven years, even in two thumbs with mild degenerative arthritis of the metacarpophalangeal joint.

BACKGROUND: Superficial medial collateral ligament (sMCL) injury is common, but there are no in vivo studies describing the biomechanical efficacy of anatomic repair with internal bracing for grade 3 injuries.
METHODS: We used a porcine model to evaluate the efficacy of internal bracing using an artificial ligament for the early repair of acute, grade 3 sMCL injuries. Sixteen male castrated pigs were randomly assigned to a repair group: (1) anatomic repair using two suture anchors (Group R; n = 9) or (2) anatomic repair with internal bracing augmentation (Group IB; n = 7). The left knees were

BACKGROUND: Posterolateral rotatory instability of the elbow (PLRI) results from incompetence of the lateral ulnar collateral ligament (LUCL), part of the lateral elbow ligamentous complex. A pivot shift test is a sensitive and specific intraoperative maneuver to assess for PLRI. While several LUCL repair and reconstruction techniques have been described, ligament reconstruction remains the gold standard treatment.
INDICATIONS: LUCL reconstruction is indicated for active patients with symptomatic PLRI whose conservative treatment has failed. Patients classically present with pain and mechanic

A 13-year-old struck by a car developed knee swelling and varus instability after treatment of a traumatic brain injury. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a displaced osseous avulsion of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) from the fibular head with partial biceps femoris rupture, without meniscal or cruciate injury. After arthroscopic exclusion of intra-articular pathology, the fragment was reduced and fixed laterally using two suture anchors and a transosseous stitch, preserving the proximal fibular physis. At 1 year, the knee was stable and radiographs were normal. In displaced pediatric

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries of the thumb's metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint are commonly seen in athletes and result from forced abduction or hyperextension of the thumb.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case involved a 29-year-old female who presented with simultaneous pain and instability in both thumbs after a traumatic incident. Bilateral ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) rupture was confirmed radiographically. Open repairs were performed using the pull-out technique and cast spica, followed by postoperative rehabilitation.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION: The patient d

BACKGROUND: Although pediatric medial epicondylar fractures and apophysitis are well studied, patterns of subapophyseal avulsion and ligamentous injuries of the medial elbow in this population merit investigation to inform optimal treatment strategies.
PURPOSE: To describe the occurrence and demographic correlates of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) avulsion and soft tissue injuries of the pediatric and adolescent elbow.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: An institutional review board-approved review was conducted to identify consecutive patients with medial

BACKGROUND: Proper soft-tissue balance was essential in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Superficial medial collateral ligament (sMCL) release has been recommended in correction of severe varus knee. However, it has concerns of overcorrection. This study aimed to analyze coronal plane laxity in sMCL-released TKA patients.
METHODS: We prospectively collected data from TKA patients who were operated from January 2015 to November 2018. All patients went through the same surgical steps; however, sMCL was left intact in mild-to-moderate deformity (sMCL-intact), while it was completely released in pa

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence of the biomechanical performance of medial collateral ligament (MCL) reconstructions for restoring stability to the MCL-deficient knee regarding valgus, external rotation (ER), and anteromedial rotatory instability (AMRI).
HYPOTHESIS: A short isometric reconstruction will better restore stability than a longer superficial MCL (sMCL) reconstruction, and an additional deep MCL (dMCL) graft will better control ER and AMRI than single-strand reconstructions.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Nine cadaveric human knees were tested in a kinem

BACKGROUND: The medial ulnar collateral ligament (MUCL) is the primary restraint to valgus force across the elbow during throwing. The incidence of MUCL continues to rise, and injuries are common in overhead throwing athletes often leading to elbow pain and instability. While MUCL reconstruction remains the gold standard for high-level throwing athletes with midsubstance tears, MUCL repair remains an option for select athletes and affords good functional outcomes with quicker return to sport compared with reconstruction.
INDICATIONS: Indications for MUCL repair include acute injuries, proxima

INTRODUCTION: This cadaveric study describes the collateral ligament constraints on the feline tarsocrural joint using stress radiography.
METHODS: Thirty-six feline cadaveric hindlimbs free of orthopaedic disease were placed in a custom-made jig and controlled stress radiography was performed before and after transection of one, or both collateral ligaments. Changes in varus and valgus deviation and pronation and supination were measured at three limb angles (extension, 120o flexion and 90o flexion).
RESULTS: There was a significant positive percentage change in the mean angle of varus devi

PURPOSE: Differences in range of motion, pinch strength, biomechanical strength, or joint angulation have previously been investigated for various means of treatment of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears. We sought to address a gap in the literature by comparing thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint angle measurements and biomechanical strength before complete, acute UCL tear and after repair with suture anchors (SA), suture tape (ST) anchor augmentation, or reconstruction with palmaris longus graft (PL).
METHODS: Thumbs and, if present, the PL tendon were harvested from 15 fresh-frozen ca

Injuries to the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) most commonly occur with concomitant cruciate ligament tears. Over the past decade, there has been increased interest in anatomic reconstruction of the posterolateral corner (PLC). Not much attention has been paid to anatomic primary LCL repair given the historically high failure rates of primary repair of lateral sided knee ligaments, but better outcomes can now be expected because of recent developments in additional suture augmentation. The purpose of this Technical Note is to describe the surgical technique of primary distal LCL repair usin

A Stener lesion is a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) from the thumb proximal phalanx at the level of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint that is displaced superficial to the adductor pollicis aponeurosis, leading to interposition of the aponeurosis between the UCL and the MCP joint. The interposition of the adductor aponeurosis distinguishes the Stener lesion from other UCL injuries and impedes healing, thereby necessitating surgery. A thorough clinical examination, including valgus stress testing of the MCP joint, is crucial to the diagnosis. In cases where the clinical e

BACKGROUND: Medial ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury is increasingly prevalent in professional baseball pitchers, and significant research has been devoted to understanding the risk factors and prevention strategies associated with it. To date, no study has investigated what the players themselves believe causes and prevents the injury.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the opinions of UCL injuries among pitchers, including professional athletes.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: A total of 214 baseball pitchers (45 high school/college, 169 Major League Baseball [MLB]/Minor League Baseb

Heterotopic ossification is a pathological ossification of soft tissues. It is a benign, recurring disease with an unpredictable onset. We here report the case of a patient treated for a fracture of the left tibial tray with installation of a screwed plate. Two months after surgery the patient had a stiff left knee. Standard radiological examination showed ossification of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) confirmed by tomodensitometry. We do not currently know which factors determine the presence of tendon and ligamentous ossification. Although clinicians often prescribe prophylactic drugs,

The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the elbow acts as the primary restraint to valgus force experienced in the late cocking and early acceleration phases of overhead throwing. If the UCL or dynamic flexor-pronator musculature is incompetent, elbow extension and valgus torque, as seen in throwing, can result in posteromedial impingement with subsequent chondromalacia and osteophyte formation. Before the first UCL reconstruction, performed by Frank Jobe in 1974, this injury was considered career ending in overhead athletes. Since the index procedure, further techniques have been developed to
