Sudden deaths linked to undiagnosed intracranial colloid cysts of third ventricle on autopsy: Series of five cases.

Sudden deaths may result from many conditions which are either not apparent at autopsy or might be missed and such cases can be tricky as there is no definite cause of death. One such entity is Intracranial colloid cysts, they are congenital neuroepithelial cysts which might be missed or might rupture at the time of dissection. They typically arise within the third ventricle of the brain and can pose a significant risk of sudden death if left undiagnosed or untreated. These are rare entity and on cut-section, these cysts contain mucoid and gelatinous material. In this paper, we have discussed

The Variable Appearance of Third Ventricular Colloid Cysts: Correlation with Histopathology and the Risk of Obstructive Ventriculomegaly.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: While third ventricular colloid cysts may present as an incidental finding, they also harbor the potential to cause ventricular obstruction and sudden death. Herein we analyze the relationship between imaging appearance and the risk of obstructive ventriculomegaly. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective review of the MR imaging appearance of 64 patients with colloid cysts, 46 of whom also had a CT scan, obtained by a tertiary hospital imaging report data base search over a 10-year period. Cysts were categorized by appearance on T2-FLAIR and correlated with pati

Microsurgical treatment of third ventricular colloid cysts by interhemispheric far lateral transcallosal approach--experience of 134 patients.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are rare tumors (incidence 3.2/1000000 pear year) located in the anterosuperior part of the third ventricle. In this article, we present our microneurosurgical experience on 134 patients focusing on the nuances of ITA with demonstrative videoclips. METHODS: This surgical series is based on the microsurgical experience of the senior author (JH) at 2 Finnish neurosurgical centers (Helsinki and Kuopio, 1980-2007). Surgical anatomy is demonstrated, and the pitfalls of the different surgical steps are analyzed to avoid complications. The series reflects the whole patient

[Colloid cysts of the III ventricle. Report on our 8 cases operated on by the interhemispheric approach].

Between 1984 and 1990, 12 patients with colloid cysts of the third ventricle were operated on. 8 of them underwent surgery by an anterior transcallosal approach with very good result. The authors discuss the different methods of surgical treatment using the microsurgical technique and present the advantages of the midline approach.

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle: correlation of MR and CT findings with histology and chemical analysis.

Eight patients with colloid cysts of the third ventricle were examined with CT and MR. In six, surgical resection was performed and the material was subjected to histologic evaluation; the concentrations of trace elements were determined by particle-induced X-ray emission. Stereotaxic aspiration was performed in two. The investigation showed that colloid cysts are often iso- or hypodense relative to brain on CT (5/8), but sometimes have a center of increased density. Increased density did not correlate with increased concentration of calcium or other metals but did not correlate with high chol

Third-ventricle enterogenous cyst presentation mimicking a colloid cyst: uncommon presentation of a rare disease and literature review.

Enterogenous cysts (ECs) are endodermal lesions resulting from splitting anomalies in the neuroenteric canal. We report the case of a 64-year-old patient who presented with a sudden headache followed by collapse. Brain computed tomography revealed a hyperdense lesion in the anterior part of the third ventricle with obstructive hydrocephalus. A presumptive diagnosis of colloid cyst was made and he underwent a right transcortical approach for lesion resection. The histopathological examination revealed an EC. ECs are common lesions in the cervical-thoracic spine but rare in the supratentorial co

Intracranial nasal dermoid sinus cyst associated with colloid cyst of the third ventricle. Case report and new concepts.

A case of a 16-year-old male with both a nasal dermoid sinus cyst (NDSC) and a third ventricle colloid cyst is presented. The NDSC was excised via a single-stage combined intracranial-extracranial approach and the third ventricle colloid cyst was resected endoscopically. The pathogenetic theories of NDSC and third ventricle colloid cyst are discussed, and an embryological explanation for the simultaneous development of the two lesions in this patient is explored. This case is best classified among congenital developmental malformations in a category we propose to call 'anterior neuropore corri

Giant Colloid Cysts: Evaluating Treatment Approaches and Patient Outcomes through a Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Giant colloid cysts are rare, benign lesions typically located in the third ventricle, accounting for approximately 2% of primary brain tumors and 15%-20% of intraventricular masses. Although small colloid cysts are relatively common, giant colloid cysts measuring over 3 cm are exceedingly rare and pose significant surgical challenges due to their size and critical anatomical location. This study retrospectively analyzes a series of 5 cases of giant colloid cysts from our local experience, in addition to a comprehensive literature review including 38 studies comprising 48 patients. Surgical ap

Endoscopic versus Microsurgical Resection of Third Ventricle Colloid Cysts: A Single-Center Case Series of 140 Consecutive Patients.

BACKGROUND: Both endoscopic and microsurgery transcortical resection methods are used for colloid cysts of the third ventricle but they have not been compared regarding benefits and pitfalls. METHODS: Data of patients who underwent surgical resection of third ventricle colloid cyst via either endoscopic or microsurgery approach by a single surgeon from 2005 to 2020 were retrospectively collected. After administration of criteria, 140 records were retrieved (60 patients through endoscopic resection and 80 patients by a transcranial microsurgery approach). Endoscopic trans-septal interforniceal approach for excision of colloid cysts of the third ventricle using the rotational technique.

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are benign intracranial lesions that account for 0.5 to 2% of all brain tumors and are even rarer in pediatric population. Dandy was the first to successfully excise a colloid cyst of the third ventricle via a transcortical transventricular approach in 1921. For several decades to follow, the transcortical transventricular and transcallosal microsurgical approaches remained the cornerstone of surgical management of these lesions. With time and refinements in endoscopic equipment and techniques, endoscopic resection of colloid cysts evolved into a currently

Anterior transcallosal approach to the colloid cysts of the third ventricle: case series and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the results of the anterior transcallosal approach to the colloid cysts of the third ventricle. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the patients operated on between 1986 and 2003 was carried out. There were 19 patients (10 female, 9 male) with a median age of 43. The main presenting symptom was headache. One of the patients presented with acromegaly due to a pituitary tumor. The size of the cysts ranged from 15 to 43 mm. An anterior transcallosal approach was used in all patients. RESULTS: The cysts were excised totally in all cases. Postoperatively no r

Surgical management of colloid cysts of the third ventricle: a single-institution comparison of endoscopic and microsurgical resection.

OBJECTIVE: Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are histologically benign lesions that can cause obstructive hydrocephalus and death. Historically, colloid cysts have been removed by open microsurgical approaches. More recently, minimally invasive endoscopic and port-based techniques have offered decreased complications and length of stay, with improved patient satisfaction. METHODS: A single-center retrospective analysis of patients with colloid cysts who underwent surgery at a large tertiary care hospital was performed. The cohort was assessed based on the surgical approach, comparing endos

Endoscopic Versus Microscopic Transcallosal Excision of Colloid Cysts: A Systematic Review in the Era of Complete Endoscopic Excision.

OBJECTIVE: Transcallosal microscopic and endoscopic excisions are both well established approaches to colloid cyst resection; however, there has been no clear consensus regarding the favored approach. We performed a systematic review comparing the transcallosal microscopic and endoscopic transcortical approaches for colloid cyst excision. METHODS: We performed a systematic review from 2000-2018 of patients undergoing colloid cyst excision via a microscopic transcallosal or endoscopic transcortical approach where the surgical intent was gross total resection. Studies that included multiple app

Combination of Neuroendoscopic and Stereotactic Procedures for Total Resection of Colloid Cysts with Favorable Neurological and Cognitive Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Despite a wide range of surgical procedures, an unresolved debate remains regarding which attempt is optimal for the treatment of colloid cysts in the third ventricle. In this article, we present a new combination of stereotactic and endoscopic techniques. METHODS: This prospective study includes 27 consecutive patients with symptomatic primary and recurrent colloid cysts. All cysts were removed via a neuroendoscope through a rostral transfrontal, transforaminal approach. The endoscope was supported by an additional cannula fixed in the stereotactic frame. Both tools were inserted

Colloid cyst of the third ventricle: a rare case of spontaneous regression. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts (CCs) are benign lesions commonly located in the third ventricle, near the foramen of Monro. They constitute about 0.5%-1% of all intracranial tumors. As benign lesions, CCs can be found incidentally, but they can also present with neurological deterioration and are even associated with sudden death, which might be explained as a result of obstructive hydrocephalus. Thus, larger and symptomatic CCs are often considered for surgery. OBSERVATIONS: The following case presents a rare and curious instance of a spontaneously regressing CC. This represents the 11th case eve

Extensive cerebral venous thrombosis after resection of third ventricle colloid cyst.

BACKGROUND: The third ventricle colloid cyst (CC) is a benign growth usually located in the third ventricle and can cause various neurological symptoms, including sudden death. Modern surgical interventions may still result in a wide range of complications and cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is among them. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 38-year-old female with an existing diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypothyroidism and a 6-month history of headaches, blurred vision, and vomiting presented to our clinic 3 days after the headaches became excessively severe. Spontaneous regression of colloid cyst on the third ventricle: a case report with the review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cyst (CC) is a rare and benign cyst found in the third ventricle near the foramen of Monro. Although the role of surgical resection is well established in symptomatic large-sized CC, it remains debatable whether surgical removal of CC with no symptoms or minimal symptoms is necessary. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old male patient visited our institute for incidentally detected intracranial mass. MRI demonstrated typical, 12 mm-sized CC located in the third ventricle. It was noticed that the cyst spontaneously decreased in size from 12 mm to 4 mm on MRI at 18 months after t

Rare large colloid cyst obstructing the posterior third ventricle: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts of the posterior third ventricle are exceedingly rare. This location is a high-risk zone for colloid cysts because of potential obstruction of the cerebral aqueduct. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report a case of a 57-year-old man who presented with a 6-month history of progressive headache, short-term memory loss, visual blurring, and an episode of double vision. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a colloid cyst, 22 mm in diameter, attached to the roof of the posterior third ventricle. Clinical and radiological characteristics in fatal third ventricle colloid cyst. Literature review.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are a benign tumor that is almost exclusively found in the third ventricle and may cause hydrocephalus and rarely life-threatening acute deterioration and even sudden death. With very few cases of sudden death reported in literature not much is known about the patient and cyst characteristics in these patients. The authors present a review of 65 cases of colloid cyst attributed deaths in literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search for sudden death with radiologically or pathologically identified colloid cyst was done on PubMed, google scholar, Medbase and
