Evaluation of the efficacy of cow colostrum in the treatment and its effect on serum proteomes in calves with cryptosporidiosis.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of using high-quality colostrum in addition to paromomycin on the treatment outcomes and serum proteomes of calves naturally affected by cryptosporidiosis. Thirty Holstein calves infected with only Cryptosporidium spp. were divided into three equal groups. Calves in the PC group received paromomycin orally at a dose of 100 mg/kg once daily for 5 days. Calves in PCOL and PBCOL groups received 250 ml colostrum 3 h after feeding twice a day for 3 days. The PBCOL group was also given 6 g of sodium bicarbonate 15 min before colostrum administration. A pilot study of an anti-endotoxin Ig-enriched bovine colostrum to prevent experimental sepsis.

Despite the dramatic increase in antimicrobial resistance, there is a dearth of antibiotics in development and few pharmaceutical companies working in the field. Further, any new antibiotics are likely to have a short shelf life. Ab-based interventions offer alternatives that are not likely to be circumvented by the widely prevalent antibiotic resistance genes. Bovine colostrum (BC)-the first milk after parturition, rich in nutrients and immune components-promotes gut integrity and modulates the gut microbiome. We developed a hyperimmune BC (HBC) enriched in Abs to a highly conserved LOS core

Effect of feeding single-dam or pooled colostrum on maternally derived immunity in dairy calves.

The role of colostrum management in providing adequate immunological protection to neonatal calves has been widely investigated, and thresholds for colostrum quality, as well as optimum volume and timing for colostrum feeding have been established. However, limited information is available on the effect of colostrum source (single dam or pooled) on passive immunity, as well as subsequent antibody survival in the calf. This study aimed to assess the effect of feeding single-dam colostrum (own and other dam) or pooled colostrum on transfer of passive immunity, and also investigate the rate of de

Effect of colostrum quantity and quality on neonatal calf diarrhoea due to Cryptosporidium spp. infection.

This study was conducted to assess the effect of colostrum quality and quantity on Cryptosporidium spp. calf diarrhoea in an intensive dairy cattle farm in Greece. Faecal samples were collected from 100 dairy calves randomly selected and born during all 4 seasons (March 2015 to May 2016) of the year. In total, 71% of the selected calves were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts. The statistical analysis revealed influence of colostrum quality on faecal score. Linear regression showed that the colostrum quantity during the first day of life was negatively associated with the number of Cryp

Oral Supplementation with Bovine Colostrum Decreases Intestinal Permeability and Stool Concentrations of Zonulin in Athletes.

Increased intestinal permeability has been implicated in various pathologies, has various causes, and can develop during vigorous athletic training. Colostrum bovinum is a natural supplement with a wide range of supposed positive health effects, including reduction of intestine permeability. We assessed influence of colostrum supplementation on intestinal permeability related parameters in a group of 16 athletes during peak training for competition. This double-blind placebo-controlled study compared supplementation for 20 days with 500 mg of colostrum bovinum or placebo (whey). Gut permeabili

Detection of BCR-ABL-positive cells in the colostrum of a pregnant patient with chronic myeloid leukemia.

A 31-year-old pregnant woman was diagnosed with chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia at gestational week 16. To avoid exposure of the fetus to teratogenic agents, the patient opted for a course of careful observation only for the duration of her pregnancy. We detected 9.1% of BCR-ABL-positive cells in the patient's colostrum with fluorescence in situ hybridization.

Hyperimmune bovine colostrum in the treatment of shigellosis in children: a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Immunological approaches have been considered as an alternative therapeutic option for the treatment of enteric infections over the past few years. Hyperimmune bovine colostrum (HBC) is a potentially innovative immunological option in the management of shigellosis together with traditional antibiotic therapy. Children aged 1-12 y with a history of bloody mucoid diarrhoea of less than 5 d duration were enrolled after their stool specimen was found to be positive for Shigella dysenteriae type I antigen by a rapid diagnostic fluorescent antibody staining test. They were randomized to

Effects of housing and colostrum feeding on serum immunoglobulins, growth, and fecal scores of Jersey calves.

Ninety-six Jersey calves were used to evaluate the effects of housing and method of colostrum feeding on serum Ig concentrations, incidence and severity of scours, intake, and BW changes from birth to 35 d of age. Calves were separated from the dam and fed 2 L of colostrum in nipple-bottles or allowed to nurse the dam for 3 d. Calves were housed in individual hutches or wooden pens in a barn. Intake of colostrum by calves allowed to nurse the dam was not controlled. Serum IgG and IgM concentrations at 24 h of age were greater for calves that nursed the dam. Scours were less severe when calves

Impact of interspecies colostrum and milk replacement on circulating sncRNA dynamics of neonatal goat kids.

Replacing maternal colostrum and milk with those from other species is common practice in neonatal ruminant management, but the effects on small non-coding RNA (sncRNA) transmission remain poorly understood. This study investigated whether colostrum and milk replacement alters circulating sncRNA profiles in neonatal goats using a twin-pair model. Six vaccinated goat dams (Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis) and their twelve kids were included. One goat twin kid received maternal colostrum and milk, while the other was fed a replacement diet with bovine colostrum and milk replacer. Small

Immunoglobulin G absorption dynamics in neonatal calves: An investigation of the effects of casein presence in colostrum.

Casein presence in colostrum may affect the absorption of immunoglobulins in neonate dairy calves. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effect of casein presence in colostrum replacer on serum IgG dynamics on calves. Seventy-one calves (BW: 45.3 ± 5.9 kg) were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 colostrum treatments: colostrum replacer with casein addition to match the maternal colostrum (CR+C; n = 23; 85 g/L of IgG; Premolac Plus, Zinpro; 95 g/L of casein); colostrum replacer without casein addition (CR-C; n = 23; 85 g/L of IgG; Premolac Plus, Zinpro); and maternal colostrum (MC; n = 25;

Colostrum-Induced Temporary Changes in the Expression of Proteins Regulating the Epithelial Barrier Function in the Intestine.

The intestinal wall and epithelial cells are interconnected by numerous intercellular junctions. Colostrum (Col), in its natural form, is a secretion of the mammary gland of mammals at the end of pregnancy and up to 72 h after birth. Recently, it has been used as a biologically active dietary supplement with a high content of lactoferrin (Lf). Lf, a glycoprotein with a broad spectrum of activity, is becoming more popular in health-promoting supplements. This study aims to investigate whether Col supplementation can affect small and large intestine morphology by modulating the expression of sel

Effect of β-carotene supplementation to prepartum Holstein cows on colostrum quality and calf performance.

β-Carotene, a pro-vitamin A carotenoid, acts as an antioxidant, able to scavenge free radicals to prevent oxidative damage. It has also been shown to increase rumen microbial production in vitro. When supplemented prepartum, β-carotene increased colostral fat and protein concentrations. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of supplementing 700 mg/d β-carotene (BC) daily for 4 wk prepartum on cow performance, colostrum, and performance in subsequent calves. Eighteen multiparous Holstein cows housed in a tiestall barn were blocked by expected calving date and randomly ass

Alterations of the circular RNA profile in the jejunum of neonatal calves in response to colostrum and milk feeding.

Circular RNA (circRNA) have been suggested to contribute to regulating gene expression in various tissues and cells of eukaryotes. However, little is known regarding the expression pattern of circRNA and their potential function in the small intestine of neonatal calves that receive colostrum. In the current study, jejunum tissue samples were collected from control calves (2 h after birth; CT; n = 3) and neonatal calves that ingested colostrum (24 h after birth; CO; n = 3) or milk (24 h after birth; MK; n = 3) to compare the circRNA expression patterns using a high-throughput RNA sequencing ap

Bovine Colostrum for Preterm Infants in the First Days of Life: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Mother's own milk (MM) is the best nutrition for newborn preterm infants, but is often limited in supply just after birth. Pasteurized human donor milk (DM), and especially preterm infant formula (IF) are less optimal diets than MM. We hypothesized that it is feasible to use bovine colostrum (BC), the first milk from cows, as a supplement to MM, during the first weeks after preterm birth. METHODS: In an open-label, randomized, controlled pilot safety trial, supplementation of MM with BC was compared with DM supplementation (Danish unit) or IF supplementation (Chinese unit). If MM
