Prevalence and Risk Factors of Hookworm-Related Cutaneous Larva Migrans (HrCLM) in a Resource-Poor Community in Manaus, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM) is a neglected tropical skin disease associated with significant clinical pathology. Little knowledge exists about prevalence and risk factors of HrCLM in endemic regions. METHODOLOGY/ PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To understand the epidemiology of HrCLM in Amazonia, we conducted a cross-sectional study in a resource-poor township in Manaus, Brazil. HrCLM was diagnosed in 8.2% (95% CI, 6.3-10.1%) of the study population (N = 806) with a peak prevalence of 18.2% (95% CI, 9.3-27.1%) in children aged 10-14. Most of the tracks (62.4%) were locate

Place integration through efforts to support healthy aging in resource frontier communities: the role of voluntary sector leadership.

Resource-dependent communities in hinterland regions of Australia, Canada and elsewhere are rapidly aging, yet many features that distinguish them (e.g., geographic remoteness, small populations, infrastructure built with younger persons in mind) also pose significant challenges for healthy aging. These challenges can lead to substantial gaps in access to formal health and social services, with negative implications for older residents aging-in-place and the development aspirations of resource frontier communities. In this paper, we explore the efforts of voluntary sector leaders to transform

"There's no playbook for when your kid has cancer": Desired elements of an electronic resource to support pediatric cancer communication.

INTRODUCTION: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common childhood malignancy, has a relatively favorable long-term prognosis. Yet the complexity of treatment and the emotionality of the diagnosis leave families feeling unprepared for many aspects of therapy. This qualitative study aimed to identify desired elements and format of a communication resource to support patients and families facing a diagnosis of ALL. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews of 12 parents of children receiving ALL treatment, 10 parents of survivors of ALL, and eight adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors o

Molecular detection of Metastrongylus salmi eggs from pigs in low-resource communities in the state of Piauí, northeastern Brazil.

Metastrongylosis is an infection of the respiratory tract of pigs caused by parasites of the genus Metastrongylus, whose eggs are similar to other Strongylida through light microscopy; species-specific identification can be performed with molecular tools. We explored the species composition and the genetic diversity of Metastrongylus infecting pigs in close contact with humans in impoverished rural communities in the state of Piauí, in northeastern Brazil. Fecal samples (n = 78) were collected for parasitologic tests. Egg morphometry and molecular characterization, using the cytochrome c oxida

APPLICABILITY of DENTAL PATIENT REPORTED OUTCOMES in LOW RESOURCE SETTINGS -A CALL to BRIDGE the GAP in CLINICAL and COMMUNITY DENTISTRY.

Low resource settings (LRSs) are typically regions where inadequate healthcare resources exist and the healthcare system does not meet the acceptable global standards. The problems encountered in LRS in oral and dental medicine could be related to lack of human personnel, e.g., insufficient numbers of dentists and other dental professionals, poor infrastructure, limited or remote treatment/care facilities, lack of dental materials and supplies as well as inadequate monitoring and evaluation of public health programs. Despite the limited human resources in LRS, such settings are currently exper

Strengthening awareness and community resources for early detection of lung cancer through navigation guided screening in American Indian/Alaska Native clinics (SACRED LUNGS): Study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Annual lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose chest CT (LDCT) can prevent lung cancer deaths in individuals at high risk, and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults are among the highest risk populations; however, evidence suggests lower uptake of screening in this population compared to other groups. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of a culturally adapted patient navigation intervention delivered in Tribal healthcare clinics on LCS uptake in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with assessment o

Trajectories of Well-Being and Burnout Among Health and Social Services Community Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Study of Job Demands and Resources.

Health and social services nonprofit workers face important occupational challenges that were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and that may have impacted their psychological health during that time. In Quebec, Canada, many of these workers are employed in community-based organizations providing essential services to vulnerable populations. This longitudinal study examined the temporal evolution of well-being and burnout, as well as their associated predictors, among health and social services community workers across three time points: November 2019 to January 2020 (Time 1), June to Septem

PRISM (Program of Resources, Information and Support for Mothers): a community-randomised trial to reduce depression and improve women's physical health six months after birth [ISRCTN03464021].

BACKGROUND: In the year after birth one in six women has a depressive illness, 94% experience at least one major health problem (e.g. back pain, perineal pain, mastitis, urinary or faecal incontinence), 26% experience sexual problems and almost 20% have relationship problems with partners. Women with depression report less practical and emotional support from partners, less social support, more negative life events, and poorer physical health and see factors contributing to depression as lack of support, isolation, exhaustion and physical health problems. Fewer than one in three seek help in p

Strengthening Surgical Safety in Somalia: The Role of Scrub Nurses in Infection Prevention and Team Communication in Resource-Limited Operating Theatres.

Surgical safety in resource-limited health systems is undermined by workforce shortages, limited equipment, inconsistent sterilisation systems, incomplete use of standardised safety tools, and hierarchical team cultures. In Somali operating theatres, scrub nurses are close to the sterile field and procedural workflow, yet their safety role is often treated as technical support rather than recognised clinical leadership. This commentary addresses the gap between scrub nurses' substantial responsibility for infection prevention, counts, equipment readiness, and checklist communication and their

From research method to community resource: Co-developing a body mapping toolkit for peer support with Long Covid patients.

The paper describes the development of a Body Mapping Toolkit for Long Covid Patients, co-created in collaboration with the patient-led organisation Long Covid Support. We discuss how the use of body mapping, a participatory and arts-based research method, can support a more holistic and embodied understanding of Long Covid attentive to the way illness experiences are shaped by patients' social, cultural, and economic contexts. We further demonstrate how, through collaboration with patient organisations, body mapping might be extended beyond this research application to create spaces for peer

Community-Based Doulas and Medicaid Expansion: A Resource-Based Approach to Support the Well-being of Low-Income Postpartum Women.

Background Doula care across the perinatal period may significantly reduce the odds of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders particularly in communities experiencing deprivation. In 2023, SB23-288 was passed in Colorado titled "Improving Perinatal Health Outcomes" which requires doula services to be covered under Medicaid. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was twofold: 1) To examine perceptions of SB23-288 among a purposive sample of community-based doulas who provide care for women experiencing low socioeconomic status (SES), and 2) To explore perceptions among both commun
