Conditions Supporting Autonomous Information and Communication Technology Use Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Qualitative Content Analysis.

Information and communication technology (ICT) is increasingly promoted to support health and participation among older adults. However, the conditions under which older adults perceive ICT as usable in their daily lives remain unclear. This qualitative descriptive study explored the conditions referenced by community-dwelling older adults when judging whether ICT could be used in everyday life after completing an ICT-based occupational therapy program. Focus group discussions were conducted with 20 participants and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Six interrelated conditions were

Fall risk factors in community-dwelling elderly who receive Medicaid-supported home- and community-based care services.

OBJECTIVE: This study identifies fall risk factors in an understudied population of older people who receive community-based care services. METHOD: Data were collected from enrollees of Ohio's Medicaid home- and community-based waiver program (preadmission screening system providing options and resources today [PASSPORT]). A total of 23,182 participants receiving PASSPORT services in 2005/2006 was classified as fallers and nonfallers, and a variety of risk factors for falling was analyzed using logistic regressions. RESULTS: The following factors were identified as risk factors for falling:

Bridging Formal Health Services and Community Care for Improved Access to Culturally Appropriate End-of-Life Support for Migrant Communities.

The research aimed to understand the different cultural needs relating to death and dying of migrant populations in Western Sydney, Australia, and how end-of-life care can be provided in culturally safe ways which can, in turn, inform the policies that shape palliative care and bereavement service delivery. The mixed methods design for this study used an online quantitative survey using the Death Literacy Index, key informant qualitative interviews, culture-based community focus groups, and individual Photovoice interviews with carers. In all, 266 participants across the three largest migrant

Community pharmacists' preparedness in irritable bowel syndrome management: A descriptive, community-based study on awareness, perceptions, and clinical support practices in Qassim, Saudi Arabia.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent chronic gastrointestinal disorder affecting nearly 20% of the global population, with symptoms including constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain. As frontline healthcare providers, community pharmacists play a pivotal role in IBS management through medication guidance and patient education. However, their understanding, perceptions, and practices regarding IBS remain understudied in many regions, including Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to evaluate community pharmacists' preparedness for IBS management by assessing their awareness, per

Falls prevention education for neurological inpatients with communication support needs: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Falls are a leading cause of preventable harm among patients with neurological conditions. A substantial proportion of this population have communication support needs, which can hinder their ability to engage with fall prevention strategies. Despite this, they are frequently excluded from clinical interventions and related research. This scoping review aimed to identify and map hospital-based fall prevention interventions for this population. METHODS: Searches were conducted in Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL using terms related to falls, neurological conditions, and communicatio

A Virtual Community for Disability Advocacy: Development of a Searchable Artificial Intelligence-Supported Platform.

BACKGROUND: The lack of availability of disability data has been identified as a major challenge hindering continuous disability equity monitoring. It is important to develop a platform that enables searching for disability data to expose systemic discrimination and social exclusion, which increase vulnerability to inequitable social conditions. OBJECTIVE: Our project aims to create an accessible and multilingual pilot disability website that structures and integrates data about people with disabilities and provides data for national and international disability advocacy communities. A Mobile Health Tool for Peer Support of Individuals Reentering Communities After Incarceration.

Individuals just released from prison, or returning citizens (RCs), face high mortality rates during the reentry period, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) being a leading cause. Peer mentors can support RCs' health, but they traditionally work in person, which may not always be feasible, particularly during pandemic outbreaks such as COVID-19. We used human-centered design to build a prototype of RCPeer, a web/mobile application (app) to support peer-led reentry efforts through CVD risk screening, action planning, linkage to resources addressing reintegration needs (e.g., housing, transportati

Development of a Novel Communication Liaison Program to Support COVID-19 Patients and Their Families.

In the spring of 2020, our hospital faced a surge of critically ill coronavirus disease 2019 patients, with intensive care unit (ICU) occupancy peaking at 204% of the baseline maximum capacity. In anticipation of this surge, we developed a remote communication liaison program to help the ICU and palliative care teams support families of critically ill patients. In just nine days from inception until implementation, we recruited and prepared ambulatory specialty providers to serve in this role effectively, despite minimal prior critical care experience. We report here the primary elements neede

Chemostat culture systems support diverse bacteriophage communities from human feces.

BACKGROUND: Most human microbiota studies focus on bacteria inhabiting body surfaces, but these surfaces also are home to large populations of viruses. Many are bacteriophages, and their role in driving bacterial diversity is difficult to decipher without the use of in vitro ecosystems that can reproduce human microbial communities. RESULTS: We used chemostat culture systems known to harbor diverse fecal bacteria to decipher whether these cultures also are home to phage communities. We found that there are vast viral communities inhabiting these ecosystems, with estimated concentrations simil

Issues in the use of visual supports to promote communication in individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

PURPOSE: Visual supports are widely used and generally regarded as an effective resource for intervention with individuals who function on the autism spectrum. More cross-contextual research into their efficacy is required. METHOD AND OUTCOMES: In this article, we selectively review the research literature around visual supports based on an original conceptual model that highlights their contribution in the interpersonal social and communicative milieu of classrooms, homes and other daily living contexts. Attention is drawn to a range of practical and research issues and challenges in the use

Communicating stroke survivors' health and further needs for support in care-planning meetings.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study will illustrate how stroke survivors, their relatives and different professionals communicated in care-planning meetings when planning care for patients after their discharge from hospital. We wanted to know what topics participants were talking about, to what extent they were involved in the discussion and how the communication was organized. BACKGROUND: Communication in health care is sometimes problematic because of the participants' asymmetrical positions when negotiating how to understand the patients' future care. METHODS: A qualitative and a quantitativ

Using the internet in patient-centred diabetes care for communication, education, and decision support.

The New England Journal of Medicine 329 (1993) 977- The present paper describes two systems for communication, education, and decision support in patient-centred diabetes care. Both systems are developed under the assumption that while the clinical resources in the health care sector are limited, patients' resources and new information technology may be able to play a much more central role. With DiasNet patients can experiment with their own data. They can, retrospectively, adjust insulin doses or meals sizes, and thereby learn how to cope with various situations. Mental health implications of gender affirming care: bridging the communication and supportive gap.

Gender-affirming healthcare is a comprehensive approach that aims to support individuals in transitioning from the gender assigned to them at birth to their affirmed gender, aligning with their gender identity. This type of care involves medically necessary and scientifically supported interventions within a multidisciplinary framework. Gender dysphoria, also known as gender incongruence or transsexuality, refers to the experience of a mismatch between an individual's biological sex and their internal sense of gender, known as gender identity. Gender identity can encompass a range of expressio
