Influence of Zinc and Humic Acids on Dye Adsorption from Water by Two Composts.

Searching for alternative low-cost biosorbents for the removal of textile dyes from wastewater is currently an important subject of research. In this work, we have investigated how the presence of other contaminants in textile wastewaters can affect dye adsorption by biosorbents. We tested the adsorption of three dyes of different types: Basic Violet 10 (BV10), Acid Blue 113 (AB113) and Direct Blue 71 (DB71) by two different composts-municipal solid waste compost and pine bark compost-in the presence of Zn (5 mg L-1) or dissolved organic matter (100 mg humic acids L-1) in batch experiments. Characteristics and Sodium Pentobarbital Concentrations of Equine Mortality Compost Piles in the Upper Midwest.

Recent changes in rendering availability for chemically-euthanized animals have created a need to explore composting as an equine mortality management method. The objectives of this study were to evaluate equine mortality composting in the Upper Midwest during fall and spring, document sodium pentobarbital concentrations throughout the process, and determine nutrient content of finished compost. During each season, four horses were euthanized by intravenous administration of sodium pentobarbital. Carcasses were positioned at the center of a woodchip and shavings base and covered with a 2:1 mix

Performance of a compost and biochar packed biofilter for gas-phase hydrogen sulfide removal.

The main aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of an aerobic biofilter packed with compost for the removal of gas-phase hydrogen sulfide (H2S). After 52 d of operation, the biofilter was re-packed by replacing a certain portion (25%, v/v) of the existing compost with biochar and its performance was tested. The steady and transient performance of the biofilter was evaluated by varying the H2S concentrations from 0.1 to 2.9 g m-3 at an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 119 and 80 s, respectively. The maximum elimination capacity (ECmax) of the compost and compost + biochar biofilter

Effect of biochar and humic acid on the copper, lead, and cadmium passivation during composting.

In this study, two different biochars (sawdust charcoal (SDC) and wheat straw charcoal (WSC)) and biological humic acid (BHA) were used with different addition rates in pig manure composting to illustrate the effect on heavy metals passivation. And the composts were applied to rape (Brassica campestris L.) growth to illustrate the stability of the passivation. Results showed the concentration of Cu, Cd, and Pb increased after composting, whereas the passivation rates of Cu, Pb, and Cd reached a maximum of 94.98%, 65.55%, and 68.78%, respectively. When the composts were applied to rape growth,

Biosulfides precipitation in weathered tailings amended with food waste-based compost and zeolite.

Tailings are mine wastes in the form of slurries stacked in mine sites abandoned after the exhaustion of ores. There are approximately 5000 abandoned mine sites in Korea, and tailings have become a serious environmental problem. Long-term environmental exposure of tailings can cause release of acidic and high concentrations of sulfate- and metal-contaminated water (acid mine drainage, AMD). Organic and/or inorganic amendments have been studied for AMD prevention and passive in situ treatment of pore water. This study tests locally available food waste-based compost as a viable amendment, in ad

Bioremediation of contaminated lake sediments and evaluation of maturity indicies as indicators of compost stability.

Land contamination is one of the widely addressed problems, which is gaining importance in many developed and developing countries. International efforts are actively envisaged to remediate contaminated sites as a response to adverse health effects. Popular conventional methodologies only transfer the phase of the contaminant involving cost intensive liabilities besides handling risk of the hazardous waste. Physico-chemical methods are effective for specific wastes, but are technically complex and lack public acceptance for land remediation. iBioremediatio nî, is one of the emerging low-cost t

Determination of pesticides in compost by pressurized liquid extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

A gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric method was developed for the determination of pesticides in compost. The investigated pesticides included two fungicides, two herbicides and 10 insecticides. The pesticides were extracted from the compost by pressurized liquid extraction. The extract was cleaned up by a partition between hexane and acetonitrile followed by a dispersive solid-phase extraction using a porous carbon made from Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens). The overall recoveries were 81-104% and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranged from 2.4 to 12%. The minimum detectable

Measurement of biosolids compost odor emissions from a windrow, static pile, and biofilter.

A pilot study was conducted to compare odor emissions from a windrow process and an aerated static pile and to determine the odor reduction efficiency of a pilot two-phase biofilter for odor control of biosolids composting. Chemical compounds identified as responsible for odors from biosolids composting include ammonia, dimethyl disulfide, carbon disulfide, formic acid, acetic acid, and sulfur dioxide (or carbonyl sulfide). Aeration was found to reduce the concentration of ammonia, formic acid, and acetic acid by 72, 57, and 11%, respectively, compared with a nearby windrow, while dimethyl sul

Complementary TCA cycle precursor supply enhances ammonia assimilation and nitrogen retention during vegetable waste composting.

Reactive nitrogen loss reduces nutrient recovery efficiency and the environmental performance of organic waste composting. Citric acid and pyruvic acid were evaluated separately and in combination as complementary tricarboxylic acid cycle precursors during vegetable waste composting. All treatments received the same amount of exogenous carbon and were adjusted to the same initial pH. Precursor amendments reduced cumulative NH3 emissions by 60%-76%. The combined treatment produced the lowest final nitrogen loss and increased final glutamate content and humic substance content by 25.2% and 31.7%

Synergistic strengthening mechanism of microbial-mediated Fenton system on lignin depolymerization during rice straw composting.

This study investigated the synergistic strengthening mechanism of a microbial-mediated Fenton system in lignin depolymerization during composting. The Fenton system was constructed using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) produced by lignin-degrading microorganisms along with Fe(Ⅱ). The simultaneous inoculation of bacteria and fungi resulted in optimal enzyme activities related to lignocellulose degradation and lignin degradation rates. Moreover, the addition of 0.5% FeSO4 further optimized hydroxyl radical (·OH) production. Therefore, four treatments were set: CK (control), BHF (bacterial fungi synchr

Torrefaction as a new Post-Composting strategy to obtain stabilized organic amendments with liming potential.

Intensive agricultural and livestock production generates large volumes of by-products, and managing these wastes while maintaining soil fertility remains a major challenge. Composting provides a sustainable solution, but the process is often slow and produces heterogeneous material, particularly when feedstocks are complex, such as olive mill pomace (OMP). This study investigates a combined strategy of OMP partial composting followed by torrefaction (1  h, 275 °C) to produce a homogenized and stabilized organic amendment (thermocompost). The effects of thermal treatment at different compostin

Effects of different exogenous additives on humification and microbial community during tomato straw composting process.

The composting of agricultural organic wastes faces challenges such as prolonged maturation and inconsistent product quality, particularly for lignocellulose-rich materials like tomato straw. To address these limitations, this study investigated the effects of biochar, phosphogypsum, and calcium superphosphate as additives in tomato straw composting. These additives were selected for their documented roles in improving nutrient retention (biochar), pH regulation (phosphogypsum), and phosphorus supplementation (calcium superphosphate), which are critical for optimizing humification and microbia

Using the sulfide-oxidizing bacterium Geobacillus thermodenitrificans to restrict H2S release during chicken manure composting.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a toxic gas massively released during chicken manure composting. Diminishing its release requires efficient and low cost methods. In recent years, heterotrophic bacteria capable of rapid H2S oxidation have been discovered but their applications in environmental improvement are rarely reported. Herein, we investigated H2S oxidation activity of a heterotrophic thermophilic bacterium Geobacillus thermodenitrificans DSM465, which contains a H2S oxidation pathway composed by sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase (SQR) and persulfide dioxygenase (PDO). This strain rapidly oxidized

Biochar addition accelerates the humification process by affecting the microbial community during human excreta composting.

Biochar addition plays an important role in manure composting, but its driving mechanism on microbial succession and humification process of human excreta composting is still unclear. In the present study, the mechanism of biochar addition was explored by analysing the humification process and microbial succession pattern of human excreta aerobic composting without and with 10% biochar (HF and BHF). Results indicated that BHF improved composting temperature, advanced the thermophilic phase by 1 d, increased the germination index by 49.03%, promoted the growth rate of humic acid content by 17.4

Evaluation of bacterial diversity in a swine manure composting system contaminated with veterinary antibiotics (VAs).

Composting has become an alternative for the treatment of organic effluents, due to its low cost, easy handling, and a great capacity for treating swine manure. As it is a biological process, many microorganisms are involved during the composting process and act in the degradation of organic matter and nutrients and also have the ability to degrade contaminants and accelerate the transformations during composting. The objective of this work was to identify microorganisms present in the swine effluent composting system, under the contamination by most used veterinary drugs in Brazil. The compos

Investigation of biochar amendments on odor reduction and their characteristics during food waste co-composting.

The odor emission such as ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) during the composting process is a severe problem that adversely affects the environment and human health. Therefore, this study aimed to (1) evaluate the variation of physicochemical characteristics during the co-composting of food waste, and sawdust mixed biochar; (2) assess the efficiency of biochar-composting combined amendment materials for reducing odor emissions and their maturity. The raw materials including food waste (FW), straw dust (SD), and biochar (BC) were prepared and homogeneously mixed with the weight ranging

Microbial toxicity tests and chemical analysis as monitoring parameters at composting of creosote-contaminated soil.

Traditionally, chemical analyses are used in the assessment of contaminated soil and in monitoring the efficiency of soil remediation processes. We investigated if chemical analysis could be supported and even partly replaced by biological toxicity tests. In two case studies creosote-contaminated soil was composted outdoors in 5- and 100-m3 windrows. Degradation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was followed by chemical analysis and toxicity tests. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons were quantified and identified by HPLC. Because the soil was also contaminated by copper-, chromium-, and arsenic-conta
