Lesion correlates of auditory sentence comprehension deficits in post-stroke aphasia.

Auditory sentence comprehension requires coordination of multiple levels of processing: auditory-phonological perception, lexical-semantic comprehension, syntactic parsing and discourse construction, as well as executive functions such as verbal working memory (WM) and cognitive control. This study examined the lesion correlates of sentence comprehension deficits in post-stroke aphasia, building on prior work on this topic by using a different and clinically-relevant measure of sentence comprehension (the Token Test) and multivariate (SCCAN) and connectome-based lesion-symptom mapping methods.

Reading on a smartphone affects sigh generation, brain activity, and comprehension.

Electronic devices have become an indispensable part of our daily lives, while their negative aspects have been reported. One disadvantage is that reading comprehension is reduced when reading from an electronic device; the cause of this deficit in performance is unclear. In this study, we investigated the cause for comprehension decline when reading on a smartphone by simultaneously measuring respiration and brain activity during reading in 34 healthy individuals. We found that, compared to reading on a paper medium, reading on a smartphone elicits fewer sighs, promotes brain overactivity in

A Positive Relationship Between Sign Language Comprehension and Mental Rotation Abilities.

Past work investigating spatial cognition suggests better mental rotation abilities for those who are fluent in a signed language. However, no prior work has assessed whether fluency is needed to achieve this performance benefit or what it may look like on the neurobiological level. We conducted an electroencephalography experiment and assessed accuracy on a classic mental rotation task given to deaf fluent signers, hearing fluent signers, hearing non-fluent signers, and hearing non-signers. Two of the main findings of the study are as follows: (1) Sign language comprehension and mental rotati

Narrative comprehension and production abilities of children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11DS) is associated with language deficits and weak intellectual functioning. In other clinical groups, linguistic and cognitive difficulties have been associated with impaired acquisition of narrative abilities. However, little is known about the narrative abilities of children with 22q11DS. AIMS: To describe the ability of children with 22q11DS to produce and comprehend narrative macrostructure. Additionally, to examine the role of intellectual functioning in explaining their narrative difficulties. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Narrative skills of 1

A meta-analytic review of comprehension deficits in students with dyslexia.

Beyond the established difficulties of individuals with dyslexia in word recognition and spelling, it remains unclear how severe their difficulties in comprehension are. To examine this, we performed a meta-analytic review. A random-effects model analysis of data from 76 studies revealed a large deficit in reading comprehension in individuals with dyslexia compared to their chronological-age (CA) controls (g = 1.43) and a smaller one compared to their reading-level (RL) matched controls (g = 0.64). Individuals with dyslexia also differed significantly from their CA controls in listening compre

A Technology-based Intervention to Increase Reading Comprehension of Morphosyntax Structures.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a technology-based intervention (LanguageLinks: Syntax Assessment and Intervention®; Laureate Learning Systems, Inc., 2013) to improve reading comprehension for d/Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) elementary students. The intervention was a self-paced, interactive program designed to scaffold learning of morphosyntax structures. Participants included 37 DHH students with moderate to profound hearing levels, 7-12 years of age, in Grades 2-6. Assessment data were collected pre- and post- an 8-week intervention using a randomized control

Tinnitus Affects Speech in Noise Comprehension in Individuals With Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a prevalent auditory disorder that frequently co-occurs with hearing loss. It is suggested that tinnitus might have negative impact on speech perception. However, studies thus far have not been able to disentangle tinnitus, hearing loss, and speech in noise intelligibility. We therefore investigated whether there is an association between tinnitus and speech understanding in noise, independent of hearing loss. METHODS: Of 4,211 participants from the population-based Rotterdam Study (mean age 67.8 [SD 8.9], 57.3% female) data was available on tinnitus, pure-tone audiome

The Impact of Dysphonic Voices on Children's Comprehension of Spoken Language.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effect of teachers' dysphonic voices on children's listening comprehension. METHODS: One hundred thirty-four grade three and four students were recruited from local primary schools in Hong Kong. They were required to listen to six passages, three in Cantonese and three in English, which were either read in normal, mildly dysphonic, or severely dysphonic voices. The students were required to complete six multiple-choice comprehension questions upon listening to each passage. Comprehension performance across languages, dysphonic severities, genders, and q

Speech Comprehension Difficulties in Chronic Tinnitus and Its Relation to Hyperacusis.

Objective: Many tinnitus patients complain about difficulties regarding speech comprehension. In spite of the high clinical relevance little is known about underlying mechanisms and predisposing factors. Here, we performed an exploratory investigation in a large sample of tinnitus patients to (1) estimate the prevalence of speech comprehension difficulties among tinnitus patients, to (2) compare subjective reports of speech comprehension difficulties with behavioral measurements in a standardized speech comprehension test and to (3) explore underlying mechanisms by analyzing the relationship b

The Effect of Illustration on Improving Text Comprehension in Dyslexic Adults.

This study analyses the effect of pictures in reading materials on the viewing patterns of dyslexic adults. By analysing viewing patterns using eye-tracking, we captured differences in eye movements between young adults with dyslexia and controls based on the influence of reading skill as a continuous variable of the total sample. Both types of participants were assigned randomly to view either text-only or a text + picture stimuli. The results show that the controls made an early global overview of the material and (when a picture was present) rapid transitions between text and picture. Havin

Creativity, Comprehension, Conversation and the Hippocampal Region: New Data and Theory.

Present findings indicate that hippocampal region (HR) damage impairs aspects of everyday language comprehension and production that require creativity ___ defined as the ability to form new internal representations that satisfy relevant constraints for being useful or valuable in the real world. In two studies, seventeen people participated in extensive face-to-face interviews: sixteen normal individuals and H.M., an amnesic with cerebellar and HR damage but virtually no neocortical damage. Study 1 demonstrated deficits in H.M.'s comprehension of creative but not routine aspects of the interv

Prior knowledge of character locational stereotypes and representations during text comprehension.

Certain character locational stereotypes are expected to affect constructions of mental representations during text comprehension. The present study examined whether readers' prior knowledge of character locational stereotypes affects the construction of these character representations during text comprehension. Two short stories were presented to the participants. In one story, God, and two people wearing blue and green clothes, respectively, appeared in a room in that order (God condition). In the other, three people appeared in red, blue, and green clothes, respectively (three-people condit

The big Cs of the informed consent form: compliance and comprehension.

The informed consent process is a shield which protects subjects from harms that may be caused by a scientific enquiry. Only a competent participant with a complete understanding of the trial can give informed consent. Although the content of a valid informed consent form has been established, the Drugs and Cosmetics (First Amendment) Rules, 2013 have stipulated that ICFs must fulfil the requirements of Appendix V of Schedule Y. We considered 50 ICFs and analysed whether they complied with Appendix V. Our analysis reveals a gloomy picture, with 70% of the ICFs deviating from the requirements o

Shared syntax in language production and language comprehension--an FMRI study.

During speaking and listening syntactic processing is a crucial step. It involves specifying syntactic relations between words in a sentence. If the production and comprehension modality share the neuronal substrate for syntactic processing then processing syntax in one modality should lead to adaptation effects in the other modality. In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment, participants either overtly produced or heard descriptions of pictures. We looked for brain regions showing adaptation effects to the repetition of syntactic structures. In order to ensure that not

A Comprehensive Profile of Decoding and Comprehension in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The present study examined intake data from 384 participants with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and a comparison group of 100 participants with dyslexia on nine standardized measures of decoding and comprehension. Although diagnostic groups were based on parental reports and could not be verified independently, we were able to observe significant distinctions between subject groups. Overall findings confirm previous results of a disassociation between decoding and comprehension in ASD. Using a larger sample than previous studies and a greater variety of measures, a pattern of relatively inta

Sentence comprehension in autism: thinking in pictures with decreased functional connectivity.

Comprehending high-imagery sentences like The number eight when rotated 90 degrees looks like a pair of eyeglasses involves the participation and integration of several cortical regions. The linguistic content must be processed to determine what is to be mentally imaged, and then the mental image must be evaluated and related to the sentence. A theory of cortical underconnectivity in autism predicts that the interregional collaboration required between linguistic and imaginal processing in this task would be underserved in autism. This functional MRI study examined brain activation in 12 parti

Differential components of sentence comprehension: beyond single word reading and memory.

A number of studies have used functional neuroimaging to examine the neural mechanisms of sentence comprehension; however, few fMRI studies have examined activation patterns associated with sentence comprehension after accounting for activation attributable to single-word-level tasks important for sentence comprehension. To investigate the patterns of activation associated with sentence comprehension after controlling for single word reading and maintaining single words in memory, 20 unimpaired adult readers completed a block design paradigm which included sentence comprehension, single word r

Reading comprehension: a language intervention target from early childhood through adolescence.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in helping children and adolescents with language impairments to construct meaning from spoken and written language. They work in collaboration with other professionals and families to provide the optimal learning experiences and to introduce strategies for seeking meaning and monitoring understanding. This article describes language intervention techniques to enhance reading comprehension, including the development and enhancement of background knowledge and schemata, vocabulary, knowledge of text structure, and strategy use. The relation between spatial language comprehension and mental transformation during early childhood.

Mental transformation is the ability to visualize, represent, and manipulate two- and three-dimensional objects. Two common types of mental transformations are rotations and translations. Prior studies show that the production of spatial language as well as the comprehension of specific types of spatial words, such as dimensional adjectives, are related to individual differences in mental transformation in early childhood. The present study aims to unpack this prior research by examining whether the relation is motivated by children's comprehension of overall relational language, or this effec

Reading comprehension intervention in populations with developmental language disorder: A scoping review.

PURPOSE: Approximately 25-50 % of children with developmental language disorder (DLD) demonstrate difficulties in reading comprehension, which are associated with difficulty in language learning. Given the high likelihood that children with DLD will experience difficulties in reading comprehension, it is important to examine the effectiveness of interventions that target these challenges. The purpose of this study is to conduct a scoping review of the literature on reading comprehension interventions in populations with DLD to synthesize the existing literature and highlight knowledge gaps in
