The bone mineral areal content and the ultimate compressive strength were determined in 109 lumbar vertebrae from 36 subjects. The bone mineral areal content was related to the number, shape, and localization of the Schmorl's nodes detected in the x-rayed and sectioned vertebral bodies. One type of node, irregular in shape and localization, occurred only in the vertebrae with low bone mineral areal content values and thus in vertebrae with relatively low compressive strength. A second type of Schmorl's nodes, regular in shape and localization, did not reflect any general weakness of the verteb

Seepage from water-rich strata and persistent roof water inflow during coal mining can substantially weaken the mechanical properties of coal and rock masses. Elevated in situ stress and geothermal temperature in deep roadways further accelerate deterioration and increase the risk of engineering instability. In this study, sandstone, a common coal-seam roof rock, was selected as the test material. Immersion and uniaxial compression tests were conducted under coupled thermal-alkaline water conditions. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses were used to clarify the strength

In this paper an analysis of the influence of polymer modification on the microstructure, shielding properties against neutrons, and compressive strength of heavy-weight magnetite concrete is carried out. The modifications involve the addition of acrylic or epoxy dispersions as well as micro- or/and macrofibers. A computer image analysis method is used to evaluate the microstructure of concretes and parameters of pore structure are calculated; these parameters include relative volume fraction, relative specific surface area, and pore arrangement ratios, including a proprietary ratio based on V

Ceramic aerogels are seen as ideal materials for thermal insulation applications under extreme conditions. But they often exhibit a considerable increase in thermal conductivity at high temperatures, which could lead to a serious catastrophe in actual applications. Meanwhile, simultaneously achieving high compressive strength and superelasticity for porous ceramic structures remains a challenge. Herein, we propose one kind of novel lamellar-structured ceramic nanofiber aerogel, where the deliberately tailored ZrP2O7 and AlPO4 are used as functional constituents and form inter-nanofiber bonding

This study investigates the influence of biomass fly ash (BFA) produced from high-temperature combustion of woody biomass fuels typical of Lithuanian energy plants on the mechanical performance, microstructure, and reactivity of alkali-activated binders based on diatomite and iron dust. Diatomite was used as a reactive silica source, while iron dust served as a matrix-modifying component enhancing binder density and strength. The role of BFA (10-30%) was evaluated in terms of compressive strength, softening factor, water resistance, and structural development using XRD and FTIR analyses. The r

To address the negative environmental and economic impact of the large amounts of solid waste generated during travertine mining and to reduce the dependence on natural aggregates and cement for pervious concrete pavement applications, travertine waste, as aggregate and powder, was used for the travertine powder pervious concrete (TPPC) to improve the utilization of solid waste and decrease CO2 emissions. The experimental results showed that using 25% travertine aggregate and 5% powder results in a compressive strength reduction of only 9.8% to 25.92 MPa but a significant improvement in water

It is essential to minimize dental pulp exposure to external stimuli to maintain pulp vitality. Therefore, pulp-protective materials require sealing ability, antibacterial activity, and biocompatibility. Conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC) possesses some of these properties, while calcium 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate (CMET) can induce calcification, suggesting potential utility in pulp protection. This study compared conventional GIC, CMET-modified GIC (C-GIC), and Ca-free 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate (4-MET)-modified GIC (4M-GIC). 4M-GIC showed decreased compressive strength and s

Although magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) is conventionally deemed effective in heavy metal-contaminated soil remediation, the variations of its mechanical and leaching characteristics under the action of dry-wet cycles remain unclear as yet. This paper primarily addressed the effect of dry-wet cycles and fly ash on MPC-solidified zinc-contaminated soil via a disparate group of experiments. In this study, solidified cylindrical samples were subjected to different drying-wetting cycles ranging in times from 0 to 10 with varying content of fly ash. We then measured the mass loss, the unconfined

The effects of solution concentration, admixtures, erosion form, and age on the flexural and compressive strength of Portland cement subjected to a sulfate environment were investigated, and the corresponding relationship between the mechanical properties and influencing factors of the cement specimen was proposed. Furthermore, the phase components, crystal morphology, microstructure, and morphology of erosion products were also investigated. The research findings indicate that the flexural and compressive strengths of specimens subjected to a sulfate environment for 4 months decreased as the

PURPOSE: Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) demonstrates excellent shape retention; however, the material exhibits a prolonged resorption period. Despite its inferior mechanical strength and poor shape retention, beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) offers excellent osteoconductivity. We previously reported that incorporating β-TCP into CPC enhances mechanical strength and shape retention. However, the prolonged setting time poses a challenge for clinical application. We aimed to improve the clinical usefulness of the CPC/β-TCP composite material.

One of the main aspects of consideration in building safety and durability in fire and extreme conditions is the high-temperature performance of cementitious composites. The paper is concerned with the construction of alumina-rich binder systems using industrial by-products like bauxite residue and perlite to enhance the thermal stability as well as sustainability. The primary goal was to develop and test composites that could sustain mechanical integrity at exposure levels up to 1380o C. The experimental program included the preparation of three mixtures that were mixed using various ratios a

High-strength concrete (HSC) has a high compressive strength, high density, excellent durability, and seepage resistance, but its deformation ability is weak. Adding fibers can improve the physical and mechanical properties of HSC. Additionally, the HSC structure may face the threat of fire. In the process of fire extinguishing, the damage mechanism of high-temperature-resistant concrete is complicated due to the different contact conditions with water at different locations. Hence, it is essential to conduct pertinent research on the behavior of fiber-reinforced HSC with different cooling met

This study presents an experimental investigation of the quasi-static and dynamic behavior of a quasi-isotropic carbon-fiber-reinforced composite subjected to in-plane compressive loading. The experiments were performed at strain rates ranging from 4×10-5 to ∼1200 s-1 to quantifythe strain-rate-dependent response, failure propagation, and damage morphology using advanced camera systems. Fiber bridging, kink band formation, dominance of interlaminar failure, and inter-fiber failure fracture planes are evidenced through post-mortem analysis. The evolution of the in-plane compressive strength, fa

With the aim of investigating the response of concrete to the dual effect of accidental fire high temperatures and possible induced impacts due to falling fragmented or burst parts or objects, an experimental work is conducted in this study to explore the influence of exposure to temperatures of 200, 400 and 600 °C on the responses of concrete specimens subjected to impact loads. Cylindrical specimens are tested using the recommended repeated impact procedure of the ACI 544-2R test. Three concrete mixtures with concrete nominal design strengths of 20, 40 and 80 MPa are introduced to represent

BACKGROUND: Glass ionomer cements are commonly utilized in dental restorations due to their biocompatibility, strong chemical bond with dental tissues, and ability to resist tooth decay. However, their effectiveness can be compromised by the presence of persistent cavity-causing microorganisms. Therefore, it is essential to consider incorporating antibacterial agents into these restorative materials. Swertia chirayita (S. chirayita) and Terminalia arjuna (T. arjuna) are well-known for their rich composition of phytochemicals that can potentially inhibit the growth of bacteria. Hence, the curre
