Studied the development of a theory of multivariate personality styles that are considered to correspond to the character of specific diagnostic types. Theoretical descriptions of the personality styles of the hysteric, compulsive, character disorder, manic, and depressive were operationalized by predicting specific combinations of personality dimensions measured by previously validated personality measures. A test battery composed of scales hypothesized to operationalize these characteristics was administered to samples of male and female college students (N = 95). A short scale, the Multivar

Incorporating online tools in clinical practice could help improve routine assessments of personality disorders and their co-occurring clinical disorders. TeleScreen, a Web-based self-report questionnaire for DSM-IV disorders, has not yet been compared with well-validated structured interviews for clinical and personality disorders. Patients with personality disorders (n = 89) were assessed with TeleScreen and independently interviewed with Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis-I disorders (SCID-I) and personality disorders (SCID-II). The concurrent validity was examined using sensitiv

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple tics and commonly associated with behavioral problems, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The presence of specific personality traits has been documented in adult clinical populations with Tourette syndrome but has been underresearched in younger patients. We assessed the personality profiles of 17 male adolescents with Tourette syndrome and 51 age- and gender-matched healthy controls using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent version, al

From a total sample of 1,448 psychiatric outpatients, 81 (5.6%) received a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) according to DSM-III-R criteria. Fifty-three (65%) of them had another Axis I diagnosis, while this percentage increased to 78% (63/81) when lifetime psychiatric diagnoses were recorded. The most frequent comorbid diagnoses were panic disorder, dysthymia, major depression and social phobia. Forty-three (53%) of the GAD patients met the criteria for personality disorder. They manifested obsessive-compulsive, avoidant personality and personalities of cluster C in general sig

INTRODUCTION: Relationship Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is characterized by the presence of relationship-centered or partner-focused obsessions and compulsions that determine a great sense of doubt toward the partner or the relationship. Personality characteristics, including perfectionism, are involved in the development of Relationship Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and could predispose the individual to excessive doubts and preoccupations regarding the "adequacy of the couple" or the physical appearance of one's partner. Evidence from epidemiological research shows that the LGB community c

Identity impairment is central to personality pathology generally, but less is known about how identity impairment appears differently across personality pathology. The AMPD lists a criterion for disorder-specific identity impairment for each personality disorder (PD), but these criteria have not been adequately empirically examined. N = 305 university students completed self-report measures of personality pathology (traditional DSM-5 and AMPD conceptualizations) and identity impairment (identity diffusion). We explored which identity diffusion items associated most strongly with each PD scale

The goal of this epidemiological study was to investigate lifetime history and odds ratios of personality disorders in adopted and non-adopted adults using a nationally representative sample. Data, drawn from the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), were compared in adopted (n=378) versus non-adopted (n=42,503) adults to estimate the odds of seven personality disorders using logistic regression analyses. The seven personality disorders were histrionic, antisocial, avoidant, paranoid, schizoid, obsessive-compulsive, and dependent personality disorder. Adop

It has been posited that extremely high or extremely low levels of any personality trait in the five-factor model can be maladaptive. However, the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-fifth edition (DSM-5) is composed almost exclusively of unipolar maladaptive traits. The lack of maladaptively low neuroticism and high extraversion fails to fully cover psychopathy; the lack of maladaptively high extraversion fails to cover histrionic personality disorder; the lack of maladaptively high agreeableness fails to cover

Two pathologies frequently presenting to treatment are the fear-based Cluster C variants of avoidant and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. Despite their distinctive syndromes, the literature has noted similar presentations and therapist-patient interactions that challenge diagnostic and treatment efforts. This study used a large sample (N = 1728) of psychiatric inpatients to observe differences in attachment styles across important persons (e.g., mom, dad, partner and friends) for those with avoidant or obsessive-compulsive personality pathology. Results demonstrated variety in attac

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between specific personality disorders and DSM-III axis I conditions in a community sample.
METHOD: A total of 810 subjects were examined by psychiatrists in the second stage of the Eastern Baltimore Mental Health Survey, part of the Epidemiological Catchment Area Program of the National Institute of Mental Health. A semistructured examination, the Standardized Psychiatric Examination, was employed to assess axis I and axis II conditions. Scales for compulsive and antisocial personality disorders were derived from DSM-III criter

The author determined the sex distribution of 170 outpatients with a DSM-III diagnosis of personality disorder measured by standardized instruments and compared his findings with DSM-III predictions. They confirmed the prediction of more women diagnosed as having histrionic personality disorder and more men diagnosed as having paranoid, compulsive, and antisocial personality disorders. The predicted excess of women diagnosed as having borderline and dependent personality disorders was not confirmed.

The relationship between eating disorders, impulse control disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder as part of a so-called 'obsessive-compulsive spectrum' is discussed, with particular emphasis on the relationship between eating disorders (particularly bulimia) and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The empirical studies on comorbidity, personality and familiarity are briefly reviewed. Both similarities and differences found in personality, body image, mental rumination, fears, physical exercises, rituals, impulses (bulimic binging and obsessive impulses) and purging behaviors of these patients

OBJECTIVE: Compulsive hoarding is a debilitating problem that is often associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. However, the precise nosology of compulsive hoarding has yet to be determined.
METHOD: Participants were 25 patients with severe compulsive hoarding with OCD and 27 patients with severe compulsive hoarding without OCD. Both groups were carefully characterized and compared on the following sociodemographic and clinical variables: precise phenomenology of hoarding behavior, severity of other OCD symptoms, axis I and axis II psy

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and impairing clinical disorder in childhood, often characterized by a heterogeneous symptomatic profile and high co-occurrence with other disorders. The present study introduces a new perspective on the description of OCD symptoms in youth, and empirically examines the value of a personality framework (e.g. Five Factor of Personality; FFM) for understanding early OCD symptomatology in a referred sample of 274 children and adolescents, relying on age-specific measures of general and maladaptive personality. Differences in general and maladaptive

BACKGROUND: We used contemporary family-epidemiological methods to examine patterns of comorbidity and familial aggregation of psychiatric disorders for anorexia and bulimia nervosa.
METHODS: Direct interviews and blind best-estimate diagnostic procedures were used with diagnostically "pure" groups of probands with eating disorders and a matched control group. Lifetime prevalence rates of eating disorders, mood disorders, substance use disorders, anxiety disorders, and selected personality disorders were determined in female probands with restricting anorexia nervosa (n=26) or bulimia nervosa

BACKGROUND: The effect of the cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder varies, but how personality disorder functioning style influences it remains unclear.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In 30 healthy volunteers and 44 patients with panic disorder (22 treated and 22 waiting list), we administered the Parker Personality Measure (PERM) and the Plutchik-van Praag Depression Inventory (PVP). Before and during the CBT or waiting period, patients were asked to record their panic attacks using the Panic Attack Record (PAR).
RESULTS: Patients scored significantly higher on PERM Antisocial, Bord

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between peptic ulcer and a wide range of personality disorders in a large sample representative of the general population in the United States.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, on the basis of a face-to-face interview of more than 43,000 adults. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to examine the relationship between self-reported "stomach ulcer" and personality disorders.
RESULTS: All seven personality disorders assessed in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol

BACKGROUND: There is abundant evidence that an individual's personality traits may influence their level of empathy. However, the role of death attitudes in the relationship between personality disorder functioning styles of nurses and their empathy remains to be elucidated.
METHODS: Personality disorder functioning styles, death attitudes, and empathy levels were assessed in 614 Chinese trainee nurses using the Parker Personality Measure (PERM), the Death Attitude Scale-Revised (DAP-R), and the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals (JSE-HP).
RESULTS: Among the trainee nurses, DAP-

BACKGROUND: Although Axis I hypochondriasis is closely related to certain personality characteristics, the nature and extent of personality dysfunction in these patients still needs clarification. This study assessed the prevalence of personality disorders observed in hypochondriacal patients, described the types and comorbidity of personality disorders, and compared the psychological distress of patients with and without the most common comorbid personality disorder.
METHOD: One hundred fifteen patients meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, criteria f
