Multidimensional Digital Literacy and Quality of Life Among Informal Care Dyads in Malaysia: Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Digital literacy (DL) is a key determinant of health and social participation in later life. In Malaysia, where population aging and family caregiving are rising, limited digital engagement among older adults may widen the gray digital divide. As caregivers and care recipients are interdependent, their digital capacities may jointly shape each other's quality of life (QoL). OBJECTIVE: This study examined the multidimensional associations between DL and QoL among informal caregivers and care recipients in Malaysia and explored dyadic actor-partner effects. METHODS: A cross-section

Software for primary healthcare in a developing country. Background and problem statement.

Nurses in primary healthcare (PHC) clinics carry a heavy administrative burden, much of which can be computerized. Advantages and disadvantages of computerization and issues related to patient records and other requirements of computerized systems are well documented. However, not much attention has been given to users' needs in PHC environments in developing countries. Users in township areas have very specific needs because of a lack of previous exposure to computers and a reluctance to change working habits. Some general software requirements that system developers should consider are discu

HIV prevalence and behavioral risk factors in the Sudan People's Liberation Army: Data from South Sudan.

OVERVIEW: After two decades of civil war, South Sudan has limited published data on HIV prevalence and behavioral determinants of HIV infection risk. A surge in HIV/AIDS prevalence is a real concern for this new country with limited access to medical or HIV preventive services, and low education and literacy levels. We present findings from the first bio-behavioral surveillance survey conducted within the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 1,149 randomly selected soldiers from thirteen SPLA bases was conducted in two phases: July to August 2010 and Apr

The development of a new computer adaptive test to evaluate chorea in Huntington disease: HDQLIFE Chorea.

PURPOSE: Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease associated with motor, behavioral, and cognitive deficits. The hallmark symptom of HD, chorea, is often the focus of HD clinical trials. Unfortunately, there are no self-reported measures of chorea. To address this shortcoming, we developed a new measure of chorea for use in HD, HDQLIFE Chorea. METHODS: Qualitative data and literature reviews were conducted to develop an initial item pool of 141 chorea items. An iterative process, including cognitive interviews, expert review, translatability review, and lit

Expert appraisal and prioritization of barriers to mHealth use for older adults living with Alzheimer's disease and related Dementias: A Delphi study.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) can benefit from mHealth innovations in (daily) care. However, successful implementation and adoption of such innovations can be hindered by a lack of inclusive design. Inclusive design can be challenging, due to the variety of ADRD- and aging-related symptoms that can pose barriers to using mHealth. Previously, a literature-based model with 53 barriers to mHealth use for this population has been developed ("MHealth for OLder adults living with DEMentia - USability" or MOLDEM-US). In this study, we aim to p

Community engagement with HIV drug adherence in rural South Africa: a transdisciplinary approach.

Digital storytelling (DST) is an emerging participatory visual method which combines storytelling traditions with computer and video production technology. In this project, at the heart of the HIV epidemic in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, we used DST to create a culturally grounded community engagement intervention. Our aim was to use narratives of people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART) to stimulate dialogue among the wider community and to encourage reflection on the contextual factors that influence ART adherence in this setting. We also wanted to explore whether exposure to t

Information technology sophistication in health care: an instrument validation study among Canadian hospitals.

Several empirical studies have shown that the use of computer-based information systems could have positive impacts on organizational performance. Many agree to say that health care organizations are no exceptions. But if one wishes to identify the effects of information technology (IT) on the delivery of care, one must be able to characterize IT for operationalization purposes. The primary objective of this research project is to develop and validate a measurement instrument of IT sophistication in the hospital milieu. Such instrument should provide hospital managers with a diagnostic tool ca

Interactive computer-based cognitive training in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

The present paper presents data from ten patients suffering from mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD), all of whom were trained to use an interactive computer-based program. Using photographs of the patient and his or her personal surroundings, an everyday task of relevance to the patient was simulated on a PC-touch screen, which the patient was trained to operate. After three weeks of training (three to four sessions a week), the patients needed less help in performing the programs, they became faster, and eight out of ten made fewer mistakes. The results were most pronounced in patients

Perceived treatment urgency of common mental disorders in the German population.

Perceived treatment urgency of mental disorders are important as they determine utilization of health care. The aim was to analyze variations in perceived treatment urgency in cases of psychosis (adolescents), alcoholism (adults), and depression (older adults) with two levels of severity each by characteristics of the case and the respondents. A telephone survey (N = 1200) with vignettes describing cases of psychosis, alcoholism, and depression was conducted in Hamburg, Germany. Vignettes varied by symptom severity and sex. Perceived treatment urgency was assessed by three items. A sum scale w

Hemispheric Organization for Visual Object Recognition: A Theoretical Account and Empirical Evidence.

Despite the similarity in structure, the hemispheres of the human brain have somewhat different functions. A traditional view of hemispheric organization asserts that there are independent and largely lateralized domain-specific regions in ventral occipitotemporal (VOTC), specialized for the recognition of distinct classes of objects. Here, we offer an alternative account of the organization of the hemispheres, with a specific focus on face and word recognition. This alternative account relies on three computational principles: distributed representations and knowledge, cooperation and competi

Spatial and Time Domain Feature of ERP Speller System Extracted via Convolutional Neural Network.

Feature of event-related potential (ERP) has not been completely understood and illiteracy problem remains unsolved. To this end, P300 peak has been used as the feature of ERP in most brain-computer interface applications, but subjects who do not show such peak are common. Recent development of convolutional neural network provides a way to analyze spatial and temporal features of ERP. Here, we train the convolutional neural network with 2 convolutional layers whose feature maps represented spatial and temporal features of event-related potential. We have found that nonilliterate subjects' ERP
