A 100-Year Review: Practical female reproductive management.

Basic knowledge of mechanisms controlling reproductive processes in mammals was limited in the early 20th century. Discoveries of physiologic processes and mechanisms made early in the last century laid the foundation to develop technologies and programs used today to manage and control reproduction in dairy cattle. Beyond advances made in understanding of gonadotropic support and control of ovarian and uterine functions in basic reproductive biology, advancements made in artificial insemination (AI) and genetics facilitated rapid genetic progress of economically important traits in dairy catt

Testing photogrammetry-based techniques for three-dimensional surface documentation in forensic pathology.

Three-dimensional surface technologies particularly close range photogrammetry and optical surface scanning have recently advanced into affordable, flexible and accurate techniques. Forensic postmortem investigation as performed on a daily basis, however, has not yet fully benefited from their potentials. In the present paper, we tested two approaches to 3D external body documentation - digital camera-based photogrammetry combined with commercial Agisoft PhotoScan(®) software and stereophotogrammetry-based Vectra H1(®), a portable handheld surface scanner. In order to conduct the study three h

Feasibility and utility of a tablet-based digital neurocognitive assessment following radiosurgery for brain metastases.

Neurocognitive decline (NCD) is a significant concern for patients with brain metastases, yet traditional paper-based assessments are often burdensome. This prospective cohort study evaluated the feasibility and outcomes of a tablet-based digital neurocognitive battery in patients with prior stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Data were analyzed from an institutional prospective registry (NCT05504681) including 41 adults with prior SRS. Patients were stratified into a high-risk group (undergoing repeat SRS for progression) and a low-risk group (surveillance only). Neurocognitive function was asse

Using a tablet to understand the spatial and temporal characteristics of complex upper limb movements in chronic stroke.

Robotic devices are commonly used to quantify sensorimotor function of the upper limb after stroke; however, the availability and cost of such devices make it difficult to facilitate implementation in clinical environments. Tablets (e.g. iPad) can be used as devices to facilitate rehabilitation but are rarely used as assessment tools for the upper limb. The current study aimed to implement a tablet-based Maze Navigation Task to examine complex upper-limb movement in individuals with chronic stroke. We define complex upper-limb movement as reaching movements that require multi-joint coordinatio

Can people with Alzheimer's disease improve their day-to-day functioning with a tablet computer?

New technologies, such as tablet computers, present great potential to support the day-to-day living of persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, whether people with AD can learn how to use a tablet properly in daily life remains to be demonstrated. A single case study was conducted with a 65-year-old woman with AD. A specific and structured intervention tailored to her needs was conceptualised for the use of a calendar application on a tablet computer according to the following learning stages: Acquisition, Application and Adaptation. In spite of her severe episodic memory deficit, she

Dyslexic children fail to comply with the rhythmic constraints of handwriting.

In this study, we sought to demonstrate that deficits in a specific motor activity, handwriting, are associated to Developmental Dyslexia. The linguistic and writing performance of children with Developmental Dyslexia, with and without handwriting problems (dysgraphia), were compared to that of children with Typical Development. The quantitative kinematic variables of handwriting were collected by means of a digitizing tablet. The results showed that all children with Developmental Dyslexia wrote more slowly than those with Typical Development. Contrary to typically developing children, they a

iPatax: a Tablet-based Tool for Quantitative Assessment of Cerebellar Ataxia.

The clinical severity of cerebellar ataxia is still assessed primarily using ordinal rating scales, and continuous quantitative measures are still limited. In this context, we have developed iPatax, an iPad®-based application, as a quantitative and objective tool for assessment of cerebellar motor dysfunction. Finger movements were recorded in 27 controls and 28 patients with cerebellar ataxia during three target-following tasks: non-continuous linear, non-continuous circular, and continuous circular movements. In the controls, the coefficient of variation of velocity (CVV) during non-continuo

A comparison of the reliability of smartphone apps for opioid conversion.

BACKGROUND: Many medical professionals use smartphone applications (apps) on a daily basis to support clinical decision making. Opioid switching (conversion of one opioid to another at equianalgesic dose) is common in clinical practice and often challenging for doctors. Apps providing an opioid conversion tool can therefore be a useful resource. Despite rapid growth in the use of medical apps, the lack of robust regulation and peer review to ensure the accuracy and reliability of app content is currently an area of concern. METHOD: We searched major online app stores for apps providing an opi

Mood- and restraint-based antecedents to binge episodes in bulimia nervosa: possible influences of the serotonin system.

BACKGROUND: In bulimic syndromes, binge episodes are thought to be caused by dietary restraint and negative moods. However, as central serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine: 5-HT) mechanisms regulate appetite and mood, the 5-HT system could be implicated in diet- and mood-based binge antecedents. METHOD: We used hand-held computers to obtain repeated "online" measurements of eating behaviors, moods, and self-concepts in 21 women with bulimic syndromes, and modeled 5-HT system activity with a measure of platelet [3H]paroxetine-binding density. RESULTS: Mood and self-concept ratings were found to be

Geometrically accurate real-time volumetric visualization of the middle ear using optical coherence tomography.

We introduce a novel system for geometrically accurate, continuous, live, volumetric middle ear optical coherence tomography imaging over a 10.9mm×30∘×30∘ field of view (FOV) from a handheld imaging probe. The system employs a discretized spiral scanning (DC-SC) pattern to rapidly collect volumetric data and applies real-time scan conversion and lateral angular distortion correction to reduce geometric inaccuracies to below the system's lateral resolution over 92% of the FOV. We validate the geometric accuracy of the resulting images through comparison with co-registered micro-computed tomogra
