Neural representations of magnitude for natural and rational numbers.

Humans have developed multiple symbolic representations for numbers, including natural numbers (positive integers) as well as rational numbers (both fractions and decimals). Despite a considerable body of behavioral and neuroimaging research, it is currently unknown whether different notations map onto a single, fully abstract, magnitude code, or whether separate representations exist for specific number types (e.g., natural versus rational) or number representations (e.g., base-10 versus fractions). We address this question by comparing brain metabolic response during a magnitude comparison t

Large Language Models Estimate Fine-Grained Human Color-Concept Associations.

People reliably associate the meanings of both abstract and concrete words with colors distributed over color space, a phenomenon that influences aspects of visual cognition ranging from object recognition to interpreting information visualizations. Prior research has hypothesized that color-concept associations arise from the cross-modal statistical structure of experience, but it remains unclear whether natural environments contain such structure or whether learning systems can discover it without strong prior constraints. To address these questions, we investigated whether GPT-4, a multimod

Grasp Motor Representations Facilitate Conceptual Preparation in Speech Production.

Understanding the cognitive mechanisms of spoken language production is essential for explaining human communication. Grounded in embodied cognition theory, this study investigates how object-directed sensorimotor features shape the conceptual preparation stage underlying concept selection. In Experiment 1, participants selected concepts from two dimensions: graspability (graspable vs. non-graspable) and semantic category (artificial vs. natural). This was done under three levels of response competition. Results showed a robust processing advantage for graspable objects over non-graspable ones

How children map causal verbs to different causes across development.

Although collision-like causes are fundamental in philosophical and psychological theories of causation, humans conceptualize many events as causes that lack direct contact. Here we argue that how people think and talk about different causes is deeply connected, and investigate how children learn this mapping. If Andy hits Suzy with his bike, Suzy falls into a fence and it breaks, Andy 'caused' the fence to break but Suzy 'broke' it. If Suzy forgets sunscreen and gets sunburned, the absence of sunscreen 'caused' Suzy's sunburn, but the sun 'burned' her skin. We tested 691 children and 270 adul

Male and Female Conceptualizations of Sexual Harassment in Tanzania: The Role of Consent, Male Power, and Social Norms.

Sexual harassment is pervasive worldwide, yet there is a lack of clarity on its conceptualization in many settings, especially in low-income countries. Context-specific conceptualization of sexual harassment is vital to develop effective measurement tools, estimate its magnitude, and the design of interventions to address it. We explored how different population groups in Mwanza, Tanzania, understood, conceptualized, and experienced sexual harassment. This study employed a qualitative research design involving 74 in-depth interviews and 13 focus group discussions with participants from educati

Internet Gaming Disorder in the DSM-5.

The fifth revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) includes in its research appendix a potential new diagnosis-Internet gaming disorder. This article outlines the debate surrounding non-substance addictions and the rationale for including this condition in the "Conditions for Further Study" chapter in DSM-5 Section III. It also describes the diagnostic criteria that DSM-5 recommends and methods to assess Internet gaming disorder. The paper details international research related to prevalence rates, demographic, psychiatric, and neurobiological risk factors,

Christfried Jakob's 1921 Theory of the Gnoses and Praxes as fundamental factors in cerebral cortical dynamics.

This study aims at reviving an important contribution by the pioneer neurobiologist and neurophilosopher Christfried Jakob (1866-1956) to the understanding of higher cortical functions. Jakob studied cortical dynamics at multiple levels by comparing gnoses and praxes and their corresponding pathological states, i.e. the agnosias and the apraxias. We herein provide a complete English translation of Jakob's original Spanish article dating to 1921, and further consider some key points under the scope of the neuropsychological knowledge available then, and the research evidence available 90 years

The role of epistemic reasoning in mutual exclusivity inferences.

When encountering a novel word, adults and children as young as 12 months old often reason that it refers to a novel object rather than one with an existing name - making a 'mutual exclusivity inference.' We explored the mechanism of this inference, aiming to differentiate between three hypotheses: whether mutual exclusivity arises due to reasoning about a specific speaker's knowledge, projection of one's own egocentric knowledge, or reasoning generally about the conventionality of labels. Adults and 3.5-5-year-old children in our experiment heard a label being either taught or invented on the

Children learn cause-and-effect relations from fantastical and realistic storybooks.

Young children struggle with the "reader's dilemma" (i.e., which aspects of a story with fantasy elements apply to real life), and research finds that incorporating fantasy elements such as anthropomorphic characters and unrealistic settings into storybooks can negatively affect children's learning. To explore whether children can learn about a cause-and-effect relation from fantasy storybooks, we presented children with a realistic storybook or one containing varying levels of fantasy (Study 1) and a storybook with multiple fantasy elements (Study 2). Children learned about a target event dep

Rehabilitation interventions for oculomotor deficits in adults with mild traumatic brain injury: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is the most common form of TBI with many individuals suffering from symptoms suggestive of deficits in oculomotor function. Although the symptoms are often experienced transiently, almost 50% of individuals will experience persistent symptoms. Oculomotor deficits can last months after injury and decrease function and the ability to participate in work, school and sport. To date, rehabilitation interventions targeting oculomotor deficits in mTBI have been reported on in several studies with varying study designs; however, the effectiveness of the

Co-Occurring Obsessive-Compulsive and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Review of Conceptualization, Assessment, and Cognitive Behavioral Treatment.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) co-occurs with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) nearly 25% of the time, and rates of co-occurring OCD within PTSD populations are even higher. Several studies examining the impact of co-occurring OCD and PTSD with suggest attenuated treatment response, yet findings regarding symptom presentation in this population are mixed. Given phenotypic, functional, and sometimes etiological overlap in OCD and PTSD, differential diagnosis and specialized treatment can be a complex yet important undertaking. This paper reviews the current literature on co-occurring O

Evaluating the Validity of Caffeine Use Disorder.

Caffeine use disorder is included in the conditions for further study section of the DSM-5. Caffeine's profile of neurobiological, behavioral, and clinical effects is similar to other common substances that humans use recreationally. Extant data suggest that a clinically meaningful addictive disorder develops in some regular caffeine users, but this literature is incomplete and not yet sufficient to determine if and how best to define and treat caffeine use disorder. An overview of the literature relevant to determining the clinical importance of problematic caffeine use is followed by discuss

How one family perceives another: the relationship between social constructions and problem-solving competence.

This paper delineates a rarely studied but important family process: how a family perceives and understands the relationships in other families it knows. We hypothesize that these perceptions of other families are fundamental components of a family's shared construing of its social world. Families differ in how they perceive other families, specifically, and in their approach to construing or apprehending their social world, generally. We have hypothesized that these general differences also play a crucial role in shaping the style and competence of family problem-solving. A family's approach

The Influence of Grammatical Gender on Object Conceptualization Is Weak and Language-Dependent.

Do we make gendered associations with objects whose linguistic labels have masculine/feminine grammatical gender? This question derives from the neo-Whorfian view that language shapes our conceptualizations of the world. Previous research has provided mixed answers. Here, we present three experiments where we tested for the gender effect on object conceptualization using a word association approach: a first group of participants generated adjectives for nouns referring to objects, and a second group subsequently rated those adjectives for masculinity/femininity. In Experiment 1, with native Fr

Shared Decision-Making in Choosing Dialysis Modalities for Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease: An Evolutionary Concept Analysis.

The concept of shared decision-making, which respects the autonomy of patients with chronic kidney disease in the process of choosing dialysis modalities, has been emphasized. Studies clearly defining the process of selecting dialysis methods for chronic kidney disease patients remain limited. Thus, this study aimed to conduct a Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis of shared decision-making in choosing dialysis modalities among patients with chronic kidney disease. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using data from six electronic databases from 2013 to 2024. In total, 36 papers

Category structure guides the formation of neural representations.

Perceptual variability is often viewed as having multiple benefits in object learning and categorization. Despite the abundant results demonstrating benefits such as increased transfer of knowledge, the neural mechanisms underlying variability as well as the developmental trajectories of how variability precipitates changes to category boundaries are unknown. By manipulating an individual's exposure to variability of novel, metrically organized categories during an fMRI-adaptation paradigm, we were able to assess the functional differences between similarity and variability in category learnin

State-dependent TMS reveals the differential contribution of ATL and IPS to the representation of abstract concepts related to social and quantity knowledge.

The neural representation of abstract concepts is a current matter of debate. While social concepts have been associated to superior anterior temporal lobe (sATL), the neural correlates of quantity-related concepts have seldom been investigated. The right intraparietal sulcus (IPS) is known to be involved in the processing of numerical information and of quantifiers. In the present study, we investigated the causal role of right sATL and right IPS in representing social and quantity-related concepts, using a state-dependent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-priming paradigm. We modulated

Signs and symptoms preceding the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease: a systematic scoping review of literature from 1937 to 2016.

OBJECTIVE: Late diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) may be due to diagnostic uncertainties. We aimed to determine the sequence and timing of the appearance of established early signs and symptoms in people who are subsequently diagnosed with AD. METHODS: We used systematic review methodology to investigate the existing literature. Articles were reviewed in May 2016, using the following databases: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, British Nursing Index, PubMed central and the Cochrane library, with no language restriction. Data from the included articles were extracted independently by two authors
