Neurite density of the hippocampus is associated with trace eyeblink conditioning latency in 4- to 6-year-olds.

Limited options exist to evaluate the development of hippocampal function in young children. Research has established that trace eyeblink conditioning (EBC) relies on a functional hippocampus. Hence, we set out to investigate whether trace EBC is linked to hippocampal structure, potentially serving as a valuable indicator of hippocampal development. Our study explored potential associations between individual differences in hippocampal volume and neurite density with trace EBC performance in young children. We used onset latency of conditioned responses (CR) and percentage of conditioned respo

Pavlovian-to-Instrumental Transfer across Mental Disorders: A Review.

A mechanism known as Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT) describes a phenomenon by which the values of environmental cues acquired through Pavlovian conditioning can motivate instrumental behavior. PIT may be one basic mechanism of action control that can characterize mental disorders on a dimensional level beyond current classification systems. Therefore, we review human PIT studies investigating subclinical and clinical mental syndromes. The literature prevails an inhomogeneous picture concerning PIT. While enhanced PIT effects seem to be present in non-substance-related disorders, over

No significant effect of frequent online sexual behaviour on Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT): Implications for compulsive sexual behaviour disorder.

Reward based learning is broadly acknowledged to underpin the development and maintenance of addictive behaviour although the mechanism in sexual compulsivity is less understood. Using a Pavlovian-to-Instrumental Transfer (PIT) task we tested whether the motivational aspect of conditioned Pavlovian conditioned stimulus invigorated instrumental responding in relation to specific compatible monetary rewards. Performance on the task was analysed between two groups of males based on Low (N = 38) and High (N = 41) self-report online sexual behaviour (OSB). Psychometric tests including sexual compul

The effects of passive and active administration of heroin, and associated conditioned stimuli, on consolidation of object memory.

Mode of administration (i.e., active vs passive) could influence the modulatory action that drugs of abuse exert on memory consolidation. Similarly, drug conditioned stimuli modulate memory consolidation and, therefore, acquisition and extinction of this conditioned response could also be influenced by mode of drug administration. Exploring these questions in male Sprague-Dawley rats, Study 1 assessed memory modulation by post-training 0, 0.3 and 1 mg/kg heroin injected subcutaneously in operant chambers (i.e., drug conditioned context). Study 2 asked a similar question but in rats trained to

Modelling individual differences in the form of Pavlovian conditioned approach responses: a dual learning systems approach with factored representations.

Reinforcement Learning has greatly influenced models of conditioning, providing powerful explanations of acquired behaviour and underlying physiological observations. However, in recent autoshaping experiments in rats, variation in the form of Pavlovian conditioned responses (CRs) and associated dopamine activity, have questioned the classical hypothesis that phasic dopamine activity corresponds to a reward prediction error-like signal arising from a classical Model-Free system, necessary for Pavlovian conditioning. Over the course of Pavlovian conditioning using food as the unconditioned stim

Neural activations of the acquisition of conditioned sexual arousal: effects of contingency awareness and sex.

INTRODUCTION: Learning processes like classical conditioning are involved in mediating sexual behavior. Yet, the neural bases underlying these processes have not been investigated so far. AIM: The aim of this study was to explore neural activations of classical conditioning of sexual arousal with respect to sex differences and contingency awareness. METHODS: In the acquisition phase, a geometric figure (CS+) was presented for 8 seconds and was followed by highly sexual arousing pictures (UCS), whereas another figure (CS-) predicted neutral pictures. Ratings and contingency awareness were ass

Electrical activity of the reticular formation during aversive and appetitive conditioning in rats.

Evoked potentials (EP) to a conditioned stimulus (CS) were recorded from several parts of the reticular formation (RF), the midbrain central gray (CG), the occipital cortex (OC), the basolateral amygdala and the ventrobasal thalamus during appetitive and aversive classical conditionings in rats. In addition, single unit activity to rewarding CS (+) and punishing CS (-) in a single discriminative classical conditioning was recorded from RF, OC, CG and the tectum. In the EP study, peak-to-peak (p-p) amplitudes, especially of the pontine RF, increased in the initial phase of pre-conditioning, in

A computational passage-of-time model of the cerebellar Purkinje cell in eyeblink conditioning.

The cerebellar Purkinje cell controlling eyeblinks can learn, remember, and reproduce the interstimulus interval in a classical conditioning paradigm. Given temporally separated inputs, the cerebellar Purkinje cell learns to pause its tonic inhibition of a motor pathway with high temporal precision so that an overt blink occurs at the right time. Most models place the passage-of-time representation in upstream network effects. Yet, bypassing the upstream network and directly stimulating the Purkinje cell's pre-synaptic fibers during conditioning still causes acquisition of a well-timed respons

Eyeblink conditioning in rats.

Acquisition of eyeblink conditioned responses to a tone was studied in restrained male albino rats. Animals were placed in a modified restraining cage with their heads immobilized by surgically implanting a small bolt at the top of the skull and fastening it to the cage. Eyeblink responses were measured by a phototransistor which detected changes in the level of light reflected by eyelid closure. The conditioned stimulus was a 2,000-Hz, 90-dB, 500-ms tone; the unconditioned stimulus was a 4-psi, 150-ms air puff directed at the cornea; and the interstimulus interval was 350 ms, with a 60-s inte

When Silence Breaks: The Influence of Pure Tones and White Noises on Conditioned Flight Responses.

BACKGROUND: The flight response is part of the repertoire of adaptive behavioral responses all animals possess and use to face threats coming from their environment. Compared to the other responses, flight requires a high degree of physical effort and is thought to be related to those active coping strategies that can be observed in several psychopathological conditions, including anxiety and depressive disorders. In recent years, a new protocol of auditory fear conditioning has been shown to induce a learned flight response in mice, based on a conditioned stimulus that includes pure tones and

Morphine exposure modulates dimensional bias and set formation in anthropoids.

Humans demonstrate significant behavioural advantages with particular perceptual dimensions (such as colour or shape) and when the relevant dimension is repeated in consecutive trials. These dimension-related behavioural modulations are significantly altered in neuropsychological and addiction disorders; however, their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we studied whether these behavioural modulations exist in other trichromatic primate species and whether repeated exposure to opioids influences them. In a target detection task where the target-defining dimension (colour or shape) cha

Modulating perceptual learning indexed by the face inversion effect: Simulating the application of transcranial direct current stimulation using the MKM model.

We report here two large studies investigating the effects of an established transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) procedure on perceptual learning as indexed by the face inversion effect. Experiments 1a and 1b (n = 128) examined the harmful generalization from Thatcherized faces to normal faces by directly comparing the size of the inversion effect for normal faces when presented intermixed with Thatcherized faces (Experiment 1a) versus that obtained when normal faces were presented intermixed with checkerboards (Experiment 1b). The results from the sham/control tDCS groups provide t

Hippocampal ensemble dynamics and memory performance are modulated by respiration during encoding.

During offline brain states, such as sleep and memory consolidation, respiration coordinates hippocampal activity. However, the role of breathing during online memory traces remains unclear. Here, we show that respiration can be recruited during online memory encoding. Optogenetic manipulation was used to control activation of the primary inspiratory rhythm generator PreBötzinger complex (PreBötC) in transgenic mice. When intermittent PreBötC-induced apnea covered the object exploration time during encoding, novel object detection was impaired. Moreover, the mice did not exhibit freezing behav

Contrasting effects of fungicide and herbicide active ingredients and their formulations on bumblebee learning and behaviour.

Fungicides and herbicides are two of the most heavily applied pesticide classes in the world, but receive little research attention with regards to their potential impacts on bees. As they are not designed to target insects, the mechanisms behind potential impacts of these pesticides are unclear. It is therefore important to understand their influence at a range of levels, including sublethal impacts on behaviours such as learning. We used the proboscis extension reflex (PER) paradigm to assess how the herbicide glyphosate and the fungicide prothioconazole affect bumblebee olfactory learning.

Heightened false alarms of conditioned threat predict longitudinal increases in GAD and SAD symptoms over the first year of college.

Lab-based fear-conditioning studies have repeatedly implicated exaggerated threat reactivity to benign (unreinforced) stimuli as concurrent markers of clinical anxiety, but little work has examined the strength of false alarms as a longitudinal predictor of anxiety problems. As such, we tested whether heightened false alarms of conditioned threat assessed in participants' first semester of college predicted second-semester symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) - two anxiety conditions that are common in college students, have been associated with exce

Differential Effects of the Inactivation of Anterior and Posterior Orbitofrontal Cortex on Affective Responses to Proximal and Distal Threat, and Reward Anticipation in the Common Marmoset.

Structural and functional abnormalities of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) have been implicated in affective disorders that manifest anxiety-related symptoms. However, research into the functions of primate OFC has predominantly focused on reward-oriented rather than threat-oriented responses. To redress this imbalance, the present study performed a comprehensive analysis of the independent role of 2 distinct subregions of the central OFC (anterior area 11; aOFC and posterior area 13; pOFC) in the processing of distal and proximal threat. Temporary inactivation of both aOFC and pOFC heightened

Generalization of conditioned disgust and the attendant maladaptive avoidance: Validation of a novel paradigm and effects of trait disgust-proneness.

Overgeneralization of conditioned fear to safe stimuli that resemble a previously-learned threat-cue is a well-studied correlate of clinical anxiety, yet whether conditioned disgust generalizes remains unknown, as does the extent to which such generalization is associated with disgust-related traits and maladaptive outcomes. The present study addresses this gap by adapting a validated fear-generalization paradigm to assess conditioned disgust and behavioral avoidance to a disgust-cue (CS+) paired with a disgusting video clip, and safe generalization stimuli parametrically varying in perceptual
