Condom use among high-risk adolescents: anticipation of partner disapproval and less pleasure associated with not using condoms.

OBJECTIVE: We determined the association of demographic, psychosocial, and contextual factors with condom use among a large community sample of at-risk adolescents recruited from four locations in the U.S. METHODS: We enrolled 1,410 adolescents/young adults between the ages of 15 and 21 with a history of unprotected sex in the past 90 days at four study sites. Subjects completed an audio-assisted, computerized assessment that gathered information about sexual behavior and its contexts, substance use, and relevant risk and protective attitudes. RESULTS: Nearly two-thirds of adolescents did no

Condom carrying is not associated with condom use and lower prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases among minority adolescent females.

BACKGROUND: Most of the studies associated with condom carrying and use have been conducted with adults. Because minority teenage females are particularly at risk for STD/HIV infection, further investigations specifically focusing on this population are warranted. GOAL: To determine whether observed condom carrying among adolescent females was associated with multiple measures of self-reported condom use, self-reported history of sexually transmitted diseases, and prevalence of biologically confirmed sexually transmitted diseases. METHODS: For this study, 522 sexually active African American

Male-condom and female-condom use among women after counseling in a risk-reduction hierarchy for STD prevention.

BACKGROUND: A concern with hierarchy messages, which promote male condoms and female-controlled barrier methods along a prevention continuum, is that they may discourage condom use. GOAL: To measure male-condom and female-condom use among women who received hierarchy counseling and compare this with women counseled about condoms only. STUDY DESIGN: Three observational cohorts that correspond to prevention message received were assembled, and consisted of female sexually transmitted disease clinic patients who were counseled about male condoms, female condoms, or a hierarchy message. The hier

Nanotechnology and the future of condoms in the prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

OBJECTIVE: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is among the utmost destructive viruses humankind has ever faced in almost four decades. It carries with it profound socioeconomic and public health implications. Unfortunately, there is, currently, no effective cure for HIV infections. This review discusses the various types of condoms, microbicides, and the potential use of nanoparticle-coated condoms as a means of diminishing the risk of HIV transmission and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) during sexual intercourse. METHODS: We identified 153 articles from 1989 to 2015 indexed in var

Efficacy of a combined contraceptive regimen consisting of condoms and emergency contraception pills.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of the combined regimen (consisting of condoms and emergency contraception pills (ECP)) and using condoms only for the purpose of preventing pregnancy. METHODS: One-thousand-five-hundred-and-sixty-two (1,562) couples as volunteers enrolled at nine centers in Shanghai. Eight-hundred-and-twelve (812) were randomized to use male condoms and ECP (i.e., Levonorgestrel) as a back-up to condoms (the intervention group) and 750 to use male condoms only(the control group), according to their working unit. Participants were visited at admission and

Use of male condoms during and after randomized, controlled trial participation in Cameroon.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated patterns of long-term use of male condoms among partners of 966 Cameroonian women who received eight intensive, monthly counseling sessions about condoms and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment. METHOD: An interrupted time-series design was used with study participants reporting condom use and other covariates at enrollment, monthly for 6 months during the randomized, controlled trial, and at approximately 14 months after the trial. RESULTS: Consistent condom use began decreasing while women were still receiving monthly condom u

Interrupting herpes simplex virus type 2 transmission: the role of condoms and microbicides.

Condoms act as mechanical barriers to genital infection. In vitro models demonstrate that condoms are almost impermeable to viruses. A small amount of virus may cross the condom, but the condom can still reduce the level of virus exposure by several orders of magnitude. However, in vivo factors, such as condom failure during intercourse, can potentially limit their effectiveness. The weight of available evidence suggests that consistent and correct use of the male condom protects against herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, as well as other sexually transmitted infections. Female condoms shou

Use of condoms by heterosexually active drug abusers before and after AIDS education.

This study identified variables associated with increased condom use among drug abusers in a randomized trial of three AIDS educational programs in a short-term inpatient detoxification program. Participants (n = 301) completed baseline and follow-up interviews and were heterosexually active on both occasions. At baseline, 10% always, 24% sometimes, and 66% never used condoms, and this distribution changed only slightly at follow-up. Among the latter two groups, 21% increased their use. There was no differential intervention effect on changes in condom use. Women, but not men, were more likely

Reasons for non-use of condoms by homosexually active men during anal intercourse.

Sixty-eight homosexually active men attending an STD clinic were questioned to ascertain the percentage of the time they did not use condoms during anal intercourse, and the reasons for this. Data indicated that the reasons most commonly given were being in a steady relationship (32.8%), being unprepared (19.4%), couldn't be bothered (19.4%), use of alcohol or drugs (7.5%), being bisexual (4.5%), attractiveness of partner or partner attitude toward sex, and knowing the partner (3% each). These data suggest that both trust and situational variables are barriers to consistent condom use in homos

Sex workers, condoms, and mobility among men in Uzbekistan: implications for HIV transmission.

Uzbekistan has one of the fastest growing HIV epidemics in the world. In this study, men who reported mobility were compared to non-mobile men in regard to paying for sex and condom use during paid sex. The sample included 2333 men between the ages of 15 and 59 in Uzbekistan. Generalised linear models were used to assess the relationship between mobility, paid sex, and condom use while adjusting for possible confounders. Of the total sample, 103 (4.4%) reported engaging in paid sex and 43 (42%) reported using condoms while engaging in paid sex. Mobile men were found to have more than three tim

The role of partnership dynamics in determining the acceptability of condoms and microbicides.

Microbicides are a class of substances under development that could reduce the sexual transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases when applied locally to genital mucosal surfaces. Microbicide acceptability research has largely focused on product characteristics, rather than processes of negotiation within relationships about use. Gender relations, decision-making power and communication within sexual relationships are recognised as important determinants of condom and contraceptive use, and are likely to determine microbicide use also. As part of social science research linked

Adolescent dual use of condoms and hormonal contraception: trends and correlates 1991-2001.

BACKGROUND: Use of condoms with hormonal contraceptive methods (dual use) is recommended for adolescents at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy. GOAL: The goal was to measure the extent of dual use among adolescents, to estimate trends in dual use 1991-2001, to assess factors associated with dual use in 2001, and to develop information useful for prevention programs. STUDY DESIGN: We used 6 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys of 9th-12th graders conducted 1991-2001. Each survey was an independent, nationally representative sample. Sample sizes ranged from 10,904 to 16,26

Use of birth control pills, condoms, and withdrawal among U.S. high school students.

PURPOSE: To examine the use of contraception at last sexual intercourse among currently sexually active adolescents. METHODS: We analyzed data from national school-based Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBS) conducted in 1991, 1993, 1995, and 1997. The YRBS is a self-administered, anonymous survey which uses a national probability sample of U.S. students in public and private schools from grades 9 through 12. RESULTS: From 1991 to 1997, condom use significantly increased (from 46% to 57%), birth control pill use decreased (from 21% to 17%), and use of withdrawal significantly decreased (from 18

[The consistent use of condoms among intravenous drug users and their regular partners].

OBJECTIVE: To describe consistent condom use between drug injectors and their regular sexual partners and to identify factors associated to its use which may be amenable to intervention. METHODS: Information was collected by personal interviews of drug injectors in 13 sampling points of the city of Granada, Spain. A bivariate analysis of factors identified in the literature was carried out and a multivariate logistic regression was fitted to the data to test the hypothesized associations. RESULTS: The proportion of drug injectors who report consistent condom use with their regular partners w

The use of condoms with other contraceptive methods among young men and women.

In a nationally representative sample of sexually experienced youths aged 14-22, 37% of young women and 52% of young men said the condom was the primary method used to prevent pregnancy at last intercourse; an additional 8% and 7%, respectively, said they used a condom at last intercourse; much of this represents dual use [corrected]. Condom use at last intercourse was reported by 25% of young men whose partner was using the pill. Significant independent predictors of condom use with the pill among men included younger age, black race, engaging in fewer nonsexual risk behaviors and having rece

Combined use of condoms with other contraceptive methods among inner-city Baltimore women.

Data from a street survey conducted among 717 women aged 17-35 in two inner-city Baltimore communities in 1991-1992 indicate that 17% of the entire sample, 38% of women using the pill and 11% of users of methods other than the pill used a condom in addition to another method the last time they had intercourse. Although adolescents reported the highest rate of combined condom and pill use (22% of 17-19-year-olds), condom use was significantly associated with pill use among adult women (odds ratio of 1.57) but not among adolescents (odds ratio of 1.03). Condom use was negatively associated with

AIDS, sex and condoms: African healers and the reinvention of tradition in Zaire.

Condoms offer considerable protection against sexual transmission of AIDS. Yet many Africans who are at risk of infection reject condoms as "unnatural." Data from Zaire have been used to examine this culturally constructed category in relation to sexuality, procreation, gender roles, class formation and international health and development policy. Much more than a simple transfer of biomedical technology is involved. Condom use with regular partners raises issues of cultural politics at many levels. "Traditional" African healers represent important social networks with considerable authority i
