The Barekuma Collaborative Community Development Project (BCCDP) performed a study regarding family planning in communities in the Barekese sub-district near Kumasi, Ghana in July 2010. Eighty-five women, ages 15-49 years, in three communities were interviewed with a modified version of the 2008 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey. While virtually all women recognized at least one family planning method, half of all recent or current pregnancies were unintended and 20 percent of women had a previous abortion. Unexpectedly, 27 percent of women had misused norethisterone tablets (Primolut N or "

UNLABELLED: Adolescents and young women are at the greatest risk of unintended pregnancy because they are unlikely to see a family planning provider before or immediately after the sexual activity. Therefore, preventing unintended pregnancy among them is the important concern. Sexually active young women are clients with special needs for contraception. They are eligible to use a variety of the available contraceptives. Introduction of emergency contraception (EC) in the recent past can help them avoid such unintended pregnancies.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the awareness of emergency contracep

OBJECTIVE: To review new evidence regarding ten controversial issues in the use of contraceptive methods among women with special conditions and to present World Health Organization recommendations derived in part from this evidence.
DATA SOURCES: We searched MEDLINE and PREMEDLINE databases for English-language articles, published between January 1995 and December 2001, for evidence relevant to ten key contraceptive method and condition combinations: combined oral contraceptive (OC) use among women with hypertension or headaches, combined OC use for emergency contraception and adverse events

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of ovulation suppression within five days of etonogestrel 68 mg implant insertion in the presence of a dominant follicle with and without same-day ulipristal acetate.
STUDY DESIGN: This single site non-masked, exploratory randomized trial recruited people age 18-35 years with regular menstrual cycles, no pregnancy risk, and confirmed ovulatory function. We initiated transvaginal ultrasound examinations on menstrual day 7-9 and randomized participants 1:1 to etonogestrel implant alone or with concomitant ulipristal acetate 30 mg oral when a dominant follicl

Levonorgestrel is used worldwide as an emergency oral contraceptive. There have been occasional reports of ectopic pregnancy after oral levonorgestrel use. We present a case of ectopic tubal pregnancy after the use of oral levonorgestrel as an emergency contraceptive in a 37-year-old woman with a history of treatment for Chlamydia trachomatis infection. She conceived after sexual intercourse on menstrual day 14 of the first menstrual cycle following a normal delivery. After salpingectomy for this right tubal pregnancy, her following pregnancy was an ectopic pregnancy in the contralateral tube,

BACKGROUND: Levonorgestrel and ulipristal acetate are common emergency oral contraceptives (EOCs). Lack of knowledge and negative attitude toward EOCs pose barriers to the EOCs access and utilization.
AIM: This study aimed to summarize the studies on the knowledge and attitudes of healthcare providers and patients on the use of EOCs.
METHOD: A systematic search was conducted from conception to April 2022 using the following databases: CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Thai Journal Online. Data were extracted independently and were meta-analyzed using DerSimonian and Laird

We conducted a retrospective review of the medical records of women requesting emergency contraception (EC) at our emergency department over a 9-year period (1994-2002). EC accounted for 5.9% of all visits (n = 95,288) and increased from 1.26% in 1994 to 9.82% in 2002 (p < 0.001). Reasons for EC were condom problems in 79.5% of cases. EC was used only once by 93% of women. The mean daily number of visits was significantly higher in August (2.46), July (2.01) and September (2.02) than in other months (p < 0.05), and was more frequent on Sunday (3.26), Saturday (2.92) and Monday (2.05) compared

Mifepristone is an orally active progesterone antagonist. It can be used for both contraceptive and non-contraceptive clinical indications. It is a very effective drug for emergency contraception with a low incidence of side effects. There is a potential for mifepristone to be used as a once-a-month pill. There is a need, however, for a simple, inexpensive and accurate method to identify the luteinizing hormone surge before this method can be used in clinical practice. The daily administration of mifepristone offers promise as an effective method of contraception but more studies need to be do

This study focused on views towards emergency contraception among pharmacy attendants in Greater Metropolitan Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The empirical material came from a socio-anthropological study with 20 semi-structured interviews of pharmacy attendants of both sexes (8 females and 12 males). The interviews showed negative views of emergency contraception, emphasizing its potential health risks. Interviews considered emergency contraception a "hormone bomb" that can harm the female reproductive organs and other organ systems. The pharmacy attendants highlighted the risks of "uncontrolled" or

Over the past decades, most European countries switched emergency contraceptive availability from prescription to over-the-counter (OTC) status. However, the effect of OTC switches on emergency and regular contraceptive use, on demographic indicators (birth rate, abortion rate) and health outcomes (sexually transmitted diseases) varies depending on the study setting. Only Poland switched emergency contraceptives back to prescription (Rx) status after previously loosening restrictions and causal analyses of an Rx switch are lacking entirely. We employ multiple (staggered/synthetic) difference-i

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between knowledge about levonorgestrel emergency contraception (LNG-EC) and the risk of ectopic pregnancy (EP) following LNG-EC failure.
METHODS: This study included 600 women who had visited the hospital with LNG-EC failure. Of these, 300 with EP and 300 with intrauterine pregnancy (IUP) were recruited to the EP group and IUP group respectively. The participants were interviewed face-to-face using a standardized questionnaire.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pearson's chi-square tests and t-test were used to compare the sociodemographic characteristics, reproducti

BACKGROUND: Requests for supply of the emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) through community pharmacies require consideration of a range of factors and the application of professional judgment. Pharmacists should therefore be able to follow a structured reasoning process.
OBJECTIVES: The research involved an assessment of history taking and counseling by pharmacy staff through mystery patient emergency contraception product requests.
METHODS: Two challenging ECP request case scenarios were developed with assessment tools. Mystery patients were trained to present the scenarios to pharmacies. A

The charts of 340 patients who underwent an endometrial suction procedure using Karman's cannula and syringe were reviewed. The therapeutic uses of this instrument were for the treatment of chronic endometritis (18.6%), the evacuation of incomplete or missed abortion (14.6%) and hydatidiform mole (0.8%), and the retrieval of the missing tail of an intrauterine contraceptive device (1.2%). Its diagnostic indications include: the investigation of infertility (55.3%), dysfunctional uterine bleeding (8.7%), and postcoital bleeding (0.8%). The diagnostic yield of the instrument was 96.6%. The notion that the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) has a central, as well as a local action, is examined. Although the IUCD undoubtedly has a local action, certain IUCD related side effects, e.g. galactorrhoea, bloating and premenstrual syndrome and inadequate luteal function can be explained if the IUCD has some central action. The powerful postcoital anti-fertility effect of both copper-bearing and plain plastic IUCDs probably also depends to some extent on a central action. The central action of the IUCD is probably due to initiation of reflex hypothalamic activity following intra

CONTEXT: It is estimated that half of unintended pregnancies could be averted if emergency contraception (EC) were easily accessible and used.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of direct access to EC through pharmacies and advance provision on reproductive health outcomes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A randomized, single-blind, controlled trial (July 2001-June 2003) of 2117 women, ages 15 to 24 years, attending 4 California clinics providing family planning services, who were not desiring pregnancy, using long-term hormonal contraception or requesting EC.

OBJECTIVES: To describe ovulation inhibition and safety of daily oral ulipristal acetate (UPA) over 84 days.
STUDY DESIGN: This multi-center phase 1 and/or 2 trial randomized participants to use oral ulipristal 10 mg or 5 mg daily or a 3 cycle regimen of 5 mg for 24 days followed by four placebo days. We stratified randomization by body mass index (BMI) <32 or 32-40 kg/m2. To estimate ovulation inhibition, the primary outcome, participants underwent transvaginal ultrasound and blood sampling twice weekly; we analyzed compliant participants who completed the 84 day study. Emergency contraception (EC) has evolved since the 1960's to enable a better tolerance. Lower hormone doses, simplified schemes, withdrawal of estrogens have led to a user friendly, over-the-counter available EC. The copper intra-uterine device, requiring health care professionals' intervention, is less accessible. However, it allows simultaneous initiation of a reliable long-term contraception. Unfortunately, EC is still underused and information reinforcement is needed to overcome reluctance to its use.
