Contraception, Menstruation, and Sexuality after Bariatric Surgery: a Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Women with a history of bariatric surgery are recommended to avoid pregnancy at least 12 months after surgery. Evidence on the impact of bariatric surgery on contraception, menstrual cycle, and sexuality in the first year postoperative is therefore indispensable. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this paper is to prospectively study changes in contraception, menstrual cycle and sexuality in women of reproductive age following bariatric surgery. SETTING: The study was conducted in two secondary medical centers and a tertiary academic medical center. METHODS: Women attending for bariat

Reproductive health counseling at pregnancy testing: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: To pilot brief reproductive health counseling for women obtaining pregnancy testing in a managed-care setting who did not desire pregnancy. METHODS: Women received counseling, access to contraception and a booster call at 2 weeks. Changes in contraceptive behavior were evaluated. RESULTS: Of 85 women who completed counseling, 58 (68%) completed follow-up. Participants reported that counseling was useful at baseline (94%) and follow-up (83%). The staff found the intervention important (100%) and implementation feasible (100%). Forty-one percent of participants improved their use o

Durable contraception in the female domestic cat using viral-vectored delivery of a feline anti-Müllerian hormone transgene.

Eighty percent of the estimated 600 million domestic cats in the world are free-roaming. These cats typically experience suboptimal welfare and inflict high levels of predation on wildlife. Additionally, euthanasia of healthy animals in overpopulated shelters raises ethical considerations. While surgical sterilization is the mainstay of pet population control, there is a need for efficient, safe, and cost-effective permanent contraception alternatives. Herein, we report evidence that a single intramuscular treatment with an adeno-associated viral vector delivering an anti-Müllerian hormone tra

Are hormonal contraceptive users more likely to misreport unprotected sex? Evidence from a biomarker validation study in Zimbabwe.

We analyzed biomarker validation data of unprotected sex from women in Zimbabwe to determine whether condom and sexual behavior misreporting differs between users of different contraceptive methods. Self-reported sexual behavior was compared with the presence of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in vaginal fluid, a biomarker of semen exposure. Of the 195 women who were PSA positive, 94 (48 %) reported no sex or only condom-protected sex. Hormonal contraceptive users misreported sexual behavior less than women using non-hormonal methods (45 vs. 67 %, P = 0.03). This misclassification pattern coul

Sexually transmitted diseases and reproductive tract infections among contraceptive users.

OBJECTIVE: To establish the association between the use of contraceptives and the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and other reproductive tract infections (RTI). METHODS: 840 women who used contraception and who attended the Fundação Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso's Family Planning Clinic (FNSBS-FPC) over a 2-year period (1993-1994) were studied. All women answered a standard epidemiological survey and underwent a clinical laboratory assessment. The Chi-square test and a logistic regression model were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The majority of women were young (58

Service delivery characteristics associated with contraceptive use among youth clients in integrated voluntary counseling and HIV testing clinics in Kenya.

Youth attending voluntary counseling and HIV testing (VCT) services often have unmet need for contraception. Integrated family planning (FP) and HIV services can address dual HIV and unintended pregnancy prevention needs. However, little is known about which VCT service characteristics, such as quality of care, strength of FP-HIV service integration, and youth-friendliness, affect contraceptive behavior. This study explores the facility- and provider-level characteristics that may be associated with same day uptake or intention to use contraception after a VCT visit, and contraceptive use thre

Rejecting the contraceptive pill. Times are changing faster than physicians' minds: Gen Z's pledge to be listened to.

The conflict between Gen Zs and Baby Boomers is becoming evident also in the choice of contraception. In the last decades Western countries have witnessed a considerable drop in the number of women taking combined oral contraceptives and a simultaneous surge in the use of non-hormonal methods of contraception. Authors have attributed such trend to the dissatisfaction with side effects of hormonal contraceptives as well as to hormone hesitancy, which appears to be amplified by social media. However, blaming unscientific sources of information, as well as the supposed reduced literacy of those w

Implications of the Effect of Different Types of Intimate Partner Violence on the Use of Contraceptives by Mothers: Evidence from the Philippines.

This study examines the association between different dimensions of intimate partner violence (IPV)-physical violence, emotional abuse, and sexual violence-and mothers' contraceptive use, including current use of modern and natural methods as well as ever use of specific contraceptive methods, using data from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS) and propensity score matching. The results indicate that contraceptive behavior varies by type of IPV exposure. Physical violence is associated with a higher probability of current modern contraceptive use and a lower probability o

Can women's childbearing and contraceptive intentions predict contraceptive demand? Findings from a longitudinal study in Central India.

CONTEXT: To predict the need for contraceptive services, family planning program managers often rely on levels of unmet need derived from measures of childbearing intentions. However, women's intention to use a method has not received as much attention as a measure of contraceptive demand. METHODS: A survey was conducted in 1999 in rural Madhya Pradesh, India, among a subsample of women who had participated in the 1992-1993 National Family Health Survey (NFHS). The women's childbearing and contraceptive behaviors were compared with the intentions they had stated in the NFHS, and logistic regr

Female adolescent contraceptive use or nonuse at first and most recent coitus.

The purpose of this study was to determine factors that differentiate contraceptive use behaviors of sexually active adolescent women. A sample of 159 subjects, recruited from three publicly supported family planning clinics, were classified according to nonuse, inconsistent, or consistent use of contraceptives at first and most recent coitus. The Health Promotion Model provided the organizing framework for this study. Factors entered into the discriminate functions included self-image, problem solving, health-promoting behavior, race, age at first coitus, previous pregnancy, contraceptive his

The Effect of Social Media Influencer Warranting Cues on Intentions to Use Non-Hormonal Contraception.

Young women increasingly get sexual health information from social media influencers, who use persuasive communication and can alter attitudes, intentions, and behaviors. Contraception is a commonly discussed health topic among influencers on social media. Previous research suggests that influencers negatively frame and encourage the discontinuation of hormonal contraception. At the same time, influencers also encourage the uptake of less effective non-hormonal options, such as fertility awareness-based methods. Though descriptive content analysis work details these patterns in influencer cont

Acceptability and satisfaction using Quick Start with the contraceptive vaginal ring versus an oral contraceptive.

BACKGROUND: Many women discontinue their use of hormonal contraception, and even those who continue so may have difficulty using oral contraceptive pills consistently. New delivery systems, including the vaginal ring, may be easier to use, but user acceptability and satisfaction with these new methods may be affected by women's experience with their bodies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data for this study were collected as part of a randomized clinical trial on 201 women comparing immediate start of vaginal ring use with immediate start of low-dose oral contraceptive use. We assessed user satisfact

Assessing attitudes about emergency contraception among urban, minority adolescent girls: an in-depth interview study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work was to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of urban, minority adolescent girls about intention to use emergency contraception pills and to identify barriers to emergency contraception pill use. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted an in-depth, semistructured interview study of healthy, urban-dwelling, English-speaking 15- to 19-year-old black adolescents seeking care in a children's hospital emergency department. Purposive sampling was used to recruit sexually active and nonsexually active adolescents and those with and without a history of pregnanc

Development of a Mobile App on Contraceptive Options for Young African American and Latina Women.

Young African American and Latina women aged 15 to 24 are more likely to adopt short-acting forms of contraception over long-acting reversible contraception. Mobile applications and other forms of digital media may be useful for providing adolescents with information about sexual and reproductive health both inside and outside of the health care setting. The miPlan app was designed in accordance with principles of user experience design, and its content was informed by the theory of planned behavior and the transtheoretical model of behavior change. A university-based design team engaged young

Emergency contraception: clinical outcomes.

Emergency contraception (EC) is widely used to prevent unwanted pregnancy. This review considers the safety and efficacy of three commonly used methods -- levonorgestrel (LNG-EC), ulipristal acetate (UPA) and the copper intrauterine device. All are extremely safe, and side effects are minimal. Concerns about increased risks of ectopic pregnancy after EC use have proved unfounded, and possible teratogenic effects seem unlikely. Although the true effectiveness of EC is impossible to estimate, recent research suggests that LNG-EC prevents around 50% of expected pregnancies in women using the meth

Changes in providers' views and practices about emergency contraception with education.

OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in the prescribing practices, knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of health care providers after an educational program about emergency contraception. METHODS: Health care providers completed self-administered questionnaires before and 1 year after full implementation of the project. The 102 providers who completed both questionnaires were physicians (64%) and mid-level professionals from 13 San Diego County Kaiser Permanente medical offices working in departments such as obstetrics and gynecology, primary care, and emergency medicine. RESULTS: The frequency of

Women's sexual experiences as a side effect of contraception in low- and middle-income countries: evidence from a systematic scoping review.

Contraception is essential to preventing unintended pregnancy. While contraceptive use has increased significantly over the past decade, discontinuation and gaps in use remain common. Although women cite side effects as the reason for discontinuing or stopping methods, little is known about the specific ways in which contraception affects women's sexual experiences. This systematic scoping review aimed to understand how contraceptive-induced side effects relating to women's sexual experiences have been measured, classified, and explored in the literature, specifically in low- and middle-income
