Impact of suspending minimum volume requirements for knee arthroplasty on hospitals in Germany: an uncontrolled before-after study.

BACKGROUND: In 2004, the Federal Joint Committee, supreme decision-making body in German healthcare, introduced minimum volume requirements (MVRQs) as a quality instrument. Since then, MVRQs were implemented for seven hospital procedures. This study evaluates the effect of a system-wide intermission of MVRQ for total knee arthroplasty (TKA), demanding 50 annual cases per hospital. METHODS: An uncontrolled before-after study based on federal-level data including the number of hospitals performing TKA, and TKA cases from the external hospital quality assurance programme in Germany (2004-2017).

The 'brick diet' and postprandial insulin: a practical method to balance carbohydrates ingested and prandial insulin to prevent hypoglycaemia in hospitalized persons with diabetes.

AIM: Insulin is the preferred treatment for the control of diabetes in hospital, but it raises the risk of hypoglycaemia, often because oral intake of carbohydrates in hospitalized persons is lower than planned. Our aim was to assess the effect on the incidence of hypoglycaemia of giving prandial insulin immediately after a meal depending on the amount of carbohydrate ingested. METHODS: A prospective pre-post intervention study in hospitalized persons with diabetes eating meals with stable doses of carbohydrates present in a few fixed foods. Foods were easily identifiable on the tray and cont

Reported planning before and after quitting and quit success: retrospective data from the ITC 4-Country Survey.

Planning before quitting smoking is widely believed to be beneficial and is usually recommended in cessation counseling, but there is little evidence on the efficacy of specific planning activities. Using data from 1140 respondents who reported quit attempts at Wave 8 of the ITC 4-Country Survey, we analyzed use of 8 specific planning strategies before (5) and after (3) implementation of a quit attempt, in relation to cessation outcomes, delay in implementation of the attempt, and recent quitting history. Most participants reported some planning both before and after quitting, even among those

xPEDition pain: protocol for a quasi-experimental before-after study of a public health campaign on chronic pain in the Ems Dollart Region.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is a public health priority that affects 18% of Dutch and 16% of German adults, representing a major societal burden. The Ems Dollart Region (EDR), which forms the northern part of the Dutch-German border area, is particularly characterised by lower incomes, more physically demanding jobs and lower health literacy, which are associated with higher pain prevalence. Individuals with lower socioeconomic status face greater pain-related disability and reduced quality of life. Public health campaigns underpinned by pain science education provide a strategy to improve unde
