Effectiveness of EMDR in patients with substance use disorder and comorbid PTSD: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based treatment for PTSD. However, it is unclear whether EMDR shows the same effectiveness in patients with substance use disorders (SUD) and comorbid PTSD. In this trial, we examine the effectiveness of EMDR in reducing PTSD symptoms in patients with SUD and PTSD. METHODS/DESIGN: We conduct a single-blinded RCT among 158 patients with SUD and comorbid PTSD admitted to a German addiction rehabilitation center specialized for the treatment of patients with SUD and comorbid PTSD. Patients are randomized to receive e

Control of dangerous substances in discharges and microbiological abatement: European framework and a case study of an ozone disinfection system.

Directive 2000/60/EC requires the achievement of a 'good chemical status' for surface water within pre-established dates. Disinfection is needed to achieve compulsory final microbial limit values (in Italy for wastewater discharges the parameter Escherichia coli - EC - is imposed by law with a maximum limit value of 5,000 cfu/100 mL). Liquid waste and disinfection by-products must be considered when designing appropriate monitoring of dangerous substances; the specific classes of substances must be investigated according to the typology of received wastewaters and liquid wastes (where applicab

Behavioral assessment of impulsivity in pathological gamblers with and without substance use disorder histories versus healthy controls.

Pathological gamblers (PGs) may have high levels of impulsivity, and a correlation between substance use disorders (SUDs) and impulsivity is well established. However, only a handful of studies have attempted to assess impulsivity and other impulse-spectrum traits (e.g., sensation seeking) using a variety of behavioral and self-report measures in PGs and few examined the independent impact of SUDs. We compared 30 PGs without SUD histories, 31 PGs with SUD histories and 40 control participants on self-reported impulsivity, delayed discounting, attention/memory, response inhibition, risk taking,

Psychiatric and substance use disorders as risk factors for attempted suicide among adolescents: a case control study.

The objective of this research was to test substance-related and non-substance-related psychiatric disorders as predictors of attempted suicide among adolescents. Ninety-six psychiatrically disordered suicide attempters were matched one-to-one to 96 psychiatrically disordered non-attempters on age, race, gender, and the presence/absence of major depression. Conditional logistic regression was used to test psychiatric risk factors for their power to predict attempted suicide among adolescents. Bipolar disorder, cocaine use disorders, and conduct disorder were found to be predictive of attempted

Impact of work therapy on health status among homeless, substance-dependent veterans: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the health outcomes of clinician-supervised, performance-based, abstinence-contingent therapeutic work programs on homeless persons with addiction disorders. This study examined the effect of the Department of Veterans Affairs compensated work therapy program (CWT) on nonvocational outcomes. With mandatory urine screenings and adherence to addiction treatment schedules, CWT provided work opportunities (wages, hours, and responsibilities) with jobs created from Veterans Affairs contracts competitively obtained from private industry. METHODS: Homeless, substanc

Sexual abuse in eating disorder subtypes and control women: the role of comorbid substance dependence in bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between sexual abuse and eating disorders remains uncertain. Recent data have raised the possibility of differential rates of sexual abuse among subtypes of eating disorders. METHODS: We studied women with three subtypes of eating disorders: (1) 26 anorexia nervosa subjects (AN); (2) 20 bulimia nervosa subjects with comorbid substance dependence (BN + SDD); and (3) 27 bulimia nervosa subjects without substance dependence (BN - SDD). We compared women with these eating disorder subtypes to 44 control women (CW). Sexual abuse rates and diagnoses were assessed through

D4 dopamine-receptor (DRD4) alleles and novelty seeking in substance-dependent, personality-disorder, and control subjects.

Two reports have been published suggesting an association between the personality trait of novelty seeking and the DRD4*7R allele at the D4 dopamine-receptor locus (with heterozygotes or homozygotes for DRD4*7R having higher novelty seeking). We studied novelty seeking and four coding-sequence polymorphisms affecting protein structure in the D4 dopamine-receptor gene (DRD4) in a sample of 341 American subjects, of whom 224 are of primarily European ancestry and 117 are of primarily African ancestry. These subjects had diagnoses of substance dependence or personality disorder (PD) or were scree

Perioperative substance P/NK1R pharmacology: from PONV control to a testable cancer neuro-immune hypothesis.

The perioperative period is increasingly recognized as a biologically active interval in which surgical injury, anesthetic exposure, neuroendocrine stress, pain, opioid use, and innate immune remodeling may influence residual tumor-cell ecology. Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) provides a clinically validated perioperative phenotype of substance P (SP)/neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1R; TACR1) pharmacology, because NK1R antagonists are established antiemetic agents for selected high-risk patients. The relevance of this pharmacology to cancer does not rest on a shared PONV-tumor mechanism; ra

Association of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome and endocrine abnormalities: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) is a systemic endocrine and metabolic disorder that has been increasingly linked to exposure to environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Although perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been implicated as potential contributors, the combined health effects of PFASs mixtures and the potential pathways linking PFAS exposure to endocrine abnormalities remain incompletely understood. METHODS: In this hospital-based case-control study, 109 women with PMOS and 96 healthy controls were recruited. Serum concentrations

Associations between perfluoroalkyl substances and multiple sclerosis in U.S. cohorts compared with NMOSD, MOGAD, and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants with endocrine and neuroimmune properties, yet relevance to multiple sclerosis (MS) remains unclear. Recent European data suggested MS-PFAS associations may vary by sex. We evaluated sex-stratified and disease-specific PFAS-MS associations in U.S. cohorts and explored endocrine and transcriptomic correlates. METHODS: Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-derived serum PFHxS, PFOA, and PFOS were quantified in 439 participants (226 MS, 106 healthy controls [HC], 59 neuromyelitis optica spectr

Association between novel per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances and premature ovarian insufficiency: a case-control study.

STUDY QUESTION: Do novel per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (Novel PFAS) have associations with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA), and perfluoropentanesulfonic acid (PFPeS) are associated with an increased risk of POI, and the effect is worse with exposure to mixtures. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: As public health concerns following Novel PFAS exposure are rising globally, there is a need to understand the exact association between Novel PFAS and various diseases. E

Association between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion: A case-control study in China.

Although prior studies have identified that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, the potential influence of PFASs exposure on unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA) remains uncertain. Our case-control study aimed to explore the associations between PFASs and URSA, including 110 URSA cases and 91 controls from Beijing. Concentrations of 15 PFASs in serum were measured using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The associations between PFASs and the risk of URSA were then analyzed u

Effects of brief cognitive behavioral therapy on mental health in substance-related disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Population and aging are major contributing factors influencing the increase in substance use disorder (SUD), which in itself affects mental health, particularly anxiety and depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy co-treatment are considered the gold standard for the treatment of SUD. Thus, the present study has been carried out to investigate the efficacy of brief CBT on the general health of opioid users. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted with forty opioid users whose addiction was dully confirmed by a psychiatrist

A Cumulative Framework for Identifying Overburdened Populations under the Toxic Substances Control Act: Formaldehyde Case Study.

Extensive scholarship has demonstrated that communities of color, low-income communities, and Indigenous communities face greater environmental and health hazards compared to communities with more White or affluent people. Low-income, Indigenous, Black, and/or other populations of color are also more likely to lack access to health care facilities, healthy food, and adequate formal education opportunities. Despite the mountains of evidence that demonstrate the existence and significance of the elevated toxic social and environmental exposures experienced by these communities, the inclusion of

Maternal Plasma Perfluoroalkyl Substances and Miscarriage: A Nested Case-Control Study in the Danish National Birth Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread persistent organic pollutants and endocrine disruptors. High doses of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) exposure can cause pregnancy loss and infant deaths in animals, but the associations between PFAS exposures and risk of miscarriage in humans are not well studied. METHODS: Using a case-control study nested within the Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC, 1996-2002), we compared 220 pregnancies ending in miscarriage during weeks 12-22 of gestation, with 218 pregnancies resulting in live b
