A Bayesian convolutional neural network-based generalized linear model.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) provide flexible function approximations for a wide variety of applications when the input variables are in the form of images or spatial data. Although CNNs often outperform traditional statistical models in prediction accuracy, statistical inference, such as estimating the effects of covariates and quantifying the prediction uncertainty, is not trivial due to the highly complicated model structure and overparameterization. To address this challenge, we propose a new Bayesian approach by embedding CNNs within the generalized linear models (GLMs) framework.

Clinical application of convolutional neural network for mass analysis on mammograms.

BACKGROUND: The detection of masses on mammogram represents one of the earliest signs of a malignant breast cancer. However, masses may be hard to detect due to dense breast tissue, leading to false negative results. In this study, we aimed to explore the clinical application of the convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning (DL) system constructed in our previous work as an objective and accurate tool for breast cancer screening and diagnosis in Asian women. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 324 patients with masses detected on mammograms at Shenzhen People's Hospital

Interpatient ECG Heartbeat Classification with an Adversarial Convolutional Neural Network.

Discovering shared, invariant feature representations across subjects in electrocardiogram (ECG) classification tasks is crucial for improving the generalization of models to unknown patients. Although deep neural networks have recently been emerging in extracting generalizable ECG features, they usually rely on labeled samples from a large number of subjects to guarantee generalization. Extracting invariant representations to intersubject variabilities from a small number of subjects is still a challenge today due to individual physical differences. To address this problem, we propose an adve

Convolutional Neural Network based Segmentation of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are balloonlike dilations in the descending aorta associated with high mortality rates. Between 2009 and 2019, reported ruptured AAAs resulted in ~28,000 deaths while reported unruptured AAAs led to ~15,000 deaths. Automating identification of the presence, 3D geometric structure, and precise location of AAAs can inform clinical risk of AAA rupture and timely interventions. We investigate the feasibility of automatic segmentation of AAAs, inclusive of the aorta, aneurysm sac, intra-luminal thrombus, and surrounding calcifications, using 30 patient-specific com

Heart sound recognition technology based on convolutional neural network.

The mortality rate of heart disease continues to rise each year: developing mechanisms to reduce mortality from heart disease is a top concern in today's society. Heart sound auscultation is a crucial skill used to detect and diagnose heart disease. In this study, we propose a heart sound signal classification algorithm based on a convolutional neural network. The algorithm is based on heart sound data collected in the clinic and from medical books. The heart sound signals were first preprocessed into a grayscale image of 5 seconds. The training samples were then used to train and optimize the

Convolutional neural network for efficient estimation of regional brain strains.

Head injury models are important tools to study concussion biomechanics but are impractical for real-world use because they are too slow. Here, we develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) to estimate regional brain strains instantly and accurately by conceptualizing head rotational velocity profiles as two-dimensional images for input. We use two impact datasets with augmentation to investigate the CNN prediction performances with a variety of training-testing configurations. Three strain measures are considered, including maximum principal strain (MPS) of the whole brain, MPS of the corpu

Emergence of a compositional neural code for written words: Recycling of a convolutional neural network for reading.

The visual word form area (VWFA) is a region of human inferotemporal cortex that emerges at a fixed location in the occipitotemporal cortex during reading acquisition and systematically responds to written words in literate individuals. According to the neuronal recycling hypothesis, this region arises through the repurposing, for letter recognition, of a subpart of the ventral visual pathway initially involved in face and object recognition. Furthermore, according to the biased connectivity hypothesis, its reproducible localization is due to preexisting connections from this subregion to area

Patient classification using single-cell RNA-sequencing data with deep learning convolutional neural networks.

INTRODUCTION: Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) enables gene expression profiling at the resolution of individual cells, revealing cellular heterogeneity that is obscured in bulk RNA-seq. While this offers a powerful lens to study disease-specific changes, leveraging scRNA-seq data for patient phenotype classification remains challenging due to limited sample numbers, cell count variability, high dimensionality, and dependence on cell-type annotations. Existing tools attempt to address these issues using probabilistic models or attention mechanisms, but face limitations in scalability, in

FPGA Implementation of a Radar-Based Fall Detection System Using Binarized Convolutional Neural Networks.

As the number of elderly individuals living alone increases, the risk of fall-related accidents correspondingly rises, underscoring the need for rapid fall detection systems. Because falls are difficult to predict in terms of location, detection systems must be deployed in a distributed manner, which in turn requires compact and low-power implementations. Unlike camera sensors, radar sensors do not raise privacy concerns and are not limited by line-of-sight constraints. Moreover, compared with wearable sensors, radar enables continuous monitoring without user intervention. However, prior radar

Feature stabilization in convolutional neural networks using Proportional Integral Controller for lung nodule classification.

INTRODUCTION: Reliable classification of lung nodules from computed tomography (CT) images remains a challenging problem due to variations in image intensity, noise, and unstable feature representations during deep network training. Although convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved promising results in medical image analysis, their internal feature dynamics are often difficult to control, which can affect convergence stability and generalization, particularly when working with limited clinical data. METHOD: In this work, we propose a control-inspired CNN framework that incorporates
