Hyaluronic Acid-Based Photocurable Glue Application as an Alternative Surgical Approach for Corneal Injuries in Canine Patients: A Case Series.

Effective non-surgical alternatives are required for managing severe corneal injuries in dogs when surgical intervention is not feasible. This case series evaluated the therapeutic potential of hyaluronic acid (HA)-based photocurable glue (HA photoglue, Teratouch-ETM, SNVIA) in three dogs with deep corneal injuries. Case 1 was a 16-year-old Pekingese with systemic disease presenting with a descemetocele. Case 2 was a 14-year-old Maltese with diabetes mellitus and a corneal perforation. Case 3 was a 10-year-old mixed-breed dog with a corneal laceration involving 50 % stromal depth. All cases un

A dual-layer convex patch based on collagen-gelatin/alginate for corneal stroma defects repair and irregular penetrating injuries healing.

Suture-free corneal repair strategy has become a focus in the field of corneal injury treatment due to its minimal invasiveness and high efficiency. This study introduces a dual-layer convex patch for suture-free repair of ocular trauma, comprising a thermosensitive gelatin/alginate adhesive layer and a convex collagen substrate layer. This design addresses critical limitations of conventional adhesives, particularly their difficulty in forming symmetric curvature during application and insufficient bonding strength under intraocular pressure fluctuations. In vitro studies demonstrated that th

Establishment of a 10.6 μm Laser-Induced Corneal Injury Model in C57BL/6J Mice.

OBJECTIVE: To construct a 10.6 μm laser-induced corneal injury model in C57BL/6J mice and observe the wound healing process. METHODS: Four groups of C57BL/6J mice corneas were irradiated with a 10.6 μm laser at dose of 3.0, 4.5, 7.5, and 10.5 J/cm². Corneal injury severity was assessed 1 day after exposure using slit lamp microscopy, optical coherence tomography, and histopathology to determine the optimal dose for constructing corneal injury model. Following this, the corneal wound healing was monitored with the same methods for 6 months. RESULTS: No corneal damage was observed at dose of 3

Single-Atom Colloidal Nanorobotics Enhanced Stem Cell Therapy for Corneal Injury Repair.

Corneal repair using mesenchymal stem cell therapy faces challenges due to long-term cell survival issues. Here, we design cerium oxide with gold single-atom-based nanorobots (CeSAN-bots) for treating corneal damage in a synergistic combination with stem cells. Powered by glucose, CeSAN-bots exhibit enhanced diffusion and active motion due to the cascade reaction catalyzed by gold and cerium oxide. CeSAN-bots demonstrate a two-fold increase in cellular uptake efficiency into mesenchymal stem cells compared to passive uptake. CeSAN-bots possess intrinsic antioxidant and immunomodulatory propert

Oxygen uptake at the ocular surface in diabetic animals is impaired in response to central corneal injury.

Poor wound healing is one of the most devastating complications in late-stage diabetic patients. The avascular cornea does not rely on circulation for its oxygen consumption, uptaking it mainly from the atmosphere. Previous studies demonstrated that oxygen uptake (O2U) in diabetic experimental animals and patients is significantly lower than in the non-diabetic condition. Our recent experiments show that upon wounding of the central cornea the O2U decreased across the ocular surface, followed by two increases at 6-24 h, and at 72 h, which appeared to be important for proper wound healing. It i

"Healing effect of homeopathic drug Theranekron in an alkaline-induced corneal injury model in rats".

Corneal injuries, particularly those caused by alkaline substances, are challenging to treat and can lead to severe complications such as inflammation, ulceration, and blindness. Current treatments, including lavage, antibiotics, and steroids, often fail to provide rapid or complete recovery. Theranekron, a homeopathic preparation derived from the venom of the Tarantula cubensis spider, has shown anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties in veterinary medicine. This study aimed to investigate Theranekron's potential in treating corneal damage in a rat model. Thirty-two rats were divided i

Ginsenoside Rk3 Treats Corneal Injury Through the HMGB1/TLR4/NF-κB Pathway.

The cornea serves as a vital protective shield for the eye, safeguarding its intricate internal structures from external threats. Damage to the cornea compromises this protective function, triggering inflammation and potentially causing long-term harm. While ginsenoside Rk3 has demonstrated potential for repairing the corneal barrier and reducing inflammation, its effectiveness in treating corneal damage remains relatively unexplored. This comprehensive study uses both in vivo and in vitro models to investigate the therapeutic capabilities of ginsenoside Rk3. Using two models of corneal damage

Dexamethasone sodium phosphate loaded nanoparticles for prevention of nitrogen mustard induced corneal injury.

Nitrogen mustard (NM) is a potent vesicating chemical warfare agent that is primarily absorbed through skin, inhalation, or ocular surface. Ocular exposure of NM can cause acute to chronic keratopathy which can eventually lead to blindness. There is a current lack of effective countermeasures against ocular exposure of NM despite their imperative need. Herein, we aim to explore the sustained effect of Dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DSP)-loaded polymeric nanoparticles (PLGA-DSP-NP) following a single subconjunctival injection in the management and prevention of corneal injury progression upon

The Neuropeptide α-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone Prevents Persistent Corneal Edema following Injury.

Corneal endothelial cells (CEnCs) regulate corneal hydration and maintain tissue transparency through their barrier and pump function. However, these cells exhibit limited regenerative capacity following injury. Currently, corneal transplantation is the only established therapy for restoring endothelial function, and there are no pharmacologic interventions available for restoring endothelial function. This study investigated the efficacy of the neuropeptide α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) in promoting endothelial regeneration during the critical window between ocular injury and the o

A new R,R-RvD6 isomer with protective actions following corneal nerve injury.

The transparent cornea is the most densely innervated tissue in the body, primarily by sensory nerves originating from the trigeminal ganglia (TG). Damage to corneal nerves reduces sensitivity and tear secretion and results in dry eye. Consequently, ocular pain, for which no satisfactory therapies exist, arises in many cases. Treatment of injured corneas with pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) combined with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) stimulates nerve regeneration in models of refractive surgery, which damages nerves. The mechanism involves the synthesis of a stereoisomer of resolvin D6 (

Corneal and Limbal Alkali Injury Induction Using a Punch-Trephine Technique in a Mouse Model.

The cornea is critical for vision, and corneal healing after trauma is fundamental in maintaining its transparency and function. Through the study of corneal injury models, researchers aim to enhance their understanding of how the cornea heals and develop strategies to prevent and manage corneal opacities. Chemical injury is one of the most popular injury models that has extensively been studied on mice. Most previous investigators have used a flat paper soaked in sodium hydroxide to induce corneal injury. However, inducing corneal and limbal injury using flat filter paper is unreliable, since

Ocular microbiota promotes pathological angiogenesis and inflammation in sterile injury-driven corneal neovascularization.

Microbiota promotes or inhibits the pathogenesis of a range of immune-mediated disorders. Although recent studies have elucidated the role of gut microbiota in ocular disease, the effect of ocular microbiota remains unclear. Herein, we explored the role of ocular commensal bacteria in non-infectious corneal inflammation and angiogenesis in a mouse model of suture-induced corneal neovascularization. Results revealed that the ocular surface harbored a microbial community consisting mainly of Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. Elimination of the ocular commensal bacteria by oral broad

Quantitative characterization of acid- and alkali-induced corneal injury in the low-volume eye test.

Defining the extent of initial injury has proven to be a useful basis for differentiating the ocular irritation potential of surfactants; however, the applicability of this method to other types of irritants has not been demonstrated. In the following studies we characterized the extent of corneal injury following exposure to different concentrations of acetic acid and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in the rabbit low-volume eye test. Groups of rabbits received 3% acetic acid, 10% acetic acid, 2% NaOH, or 8% NaOH and were evaluated in vivo by macroscopic and in vivo confocal microscopic examination an
