Masked Corneal Opacity in Bullous Keratopathy: The Impact of Epithelial Pathology on Surgical Decision-Making-A Case Report.

Bullous keratopathy may lead to severe corneal opacity and impaired visualization of anterior segment structures, complicating surgical qualification for endothelial keratoplasty (EK). We report the case of a 67-year-old male with pseudophakic bullous keratopathy and Fuchs endothelial dystrophy presenting with clinically complete corneal opacity and visual acuity limited to hand motion. Slit-lamp examination and anterior segment optical coherence tomography demonstrated marked epithelial remodeling with a dense plaque-like surface lesion obscuring deeper corneal structures. A staged intraopera

Ocular irritation reversibility assessment of a laundry detergent using the Porcine Corneal Opacity Reversibility Assay (PorCORA): a focused study.

Consumer product manufacturers utilise a spectrum of alternative ocular irritation assays, as these tests do not require the use of live animals. Despite their usefulness, no regulatory-accepted assay assesses the reversibility of ocular damage, a key criterion of GHS ocular classification, like the rabbit eye test (i.e., Draize Rabbit Eye Test [DRET]) . The Porcine Corneal Opacity Reversibility Assay (PorCORA), an ex vivo intact corneal tissue culture model, predicts the reversibility of damage by ocular irritants. Inclusion of the damage reversibility endpoint in the PorCORA supplements othe

Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery in a patient with traumatic cataract and corneal opacity after LASIK: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) has been reported to reduce phacoemulsification time and energy compared to the manual phacoemulsification technique. This technique has been used in several complex cases such as zonular weakness, subluxated lens and traumatic cataracts because it causes less damage to weakened zonules. However, corneal opacity is considered a relative contraindication to FLACS, as it may interfere with laser beam delivery, thus causing unpredictable capsulorhexis and lens fragmentation/liquefaction. CASE PRESENTATION: We present here a case wit

A kindred with fish eye disease, corneal opacities, marked high-density lipoprotein deficiency, and statin therapy.

A kindred affected with fish eye disease (FED) from Oklahoma is reported. Two probands with corneal opacification had mean levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (C), apolipoprotein (apo) A-I, and apoA-I in very large alpha-1 HDL particles that were 9%, 17%, and 5% of normal, whereas their parents and 1 sibling had values that were 61%, 77%, and 72% of normal. The probands had no detectable lipoprotein-X, and had mean low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglyceride levels that were elevated. Their mean lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activities, cholester

Mucopolysaccharidosis II (Hunter disease) with corneal opacities. Report on two patients at the extremes of a wide clinical spectrum.

Clinically visible corneal opacities were observed in a patient with an extremely severe form of mucopolysaccharidosis II. In a second patient with an unusually mild form of mucopolysaccharidosis II, discrete corneal opacities were detected by slit-lamp examination. Thus clear corneae can no longer be regarded as a hallmark of mucopolysaccharidosis II.

Interferon Regulatory Factor 3 as a Mediator and Therapeutic Target in Innate Immune-Driven Corneal Stromal Inflammation and Opacity.

PURPOSE: Interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) is classically recognized for antiviral immunity, yet emerging evidence implicates it in sterile inflammation. This study investigated whether IRF3 regulates macrophage-stromal signaling driving corneal pathology and evaluated the therapeutic potential of targeting IRF3. METHODS: In vitro assays utilized human macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interferon-γ (IFNγ) to generate an inflammatory macrophage population (Mϕ-LPS/IFNγ cells), along with primary human corneal stromal fibroblasts (HCFs) stimulated with LPS. IRF3 was si

Defective eyelid leading edge cell migration in C57BL/6-corneal opacity mice with an "eye open at birth" phenotype.

Development of the eyelid requires coordination of the cellular processes involved in proliferation, cell size alteration, migration, and cell death. C57BL/6J-corneal opacity (B6-Co) mice are mutant mice generated by the administration of N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (100 mg/kg). They exhibit the eyelids open at birth phenotype, abnormal round cell shape from tightened F-actin bundles in leading edge keratinocytes at E16.5, and gradual corneal opacity with neovessels. The tip of the leading edge in B6-Co mice did not move forward, and demonstrated a sharp peak shape without obvious directionality. An

Corneal Opacity: Cell Biological Determinants of the Transition From Transparency to Transient Haze to Scarring Fibrosis, and Resolution, After Injury.

PURPOSE: To highlight the cellular, matrix, and hydration changes associated with opacity that occurs in the corneal stroma after injury. METHODS: Review of the literature. RESULTS: The regulated transition of keratocytes to corneal fibroblasts and myofibroblasts, and of bone marrow-derived fibrocytes to myofibroblasts, is in large part modulated by transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) entry into the stroma after injury to the epithelial basement membrane (EBM) and/or Descemet's membrane. Clinical variability of autosomal dominant cataract, microcornea and corneal opacity and novel mutation in the alpha A crystallin gene (CRYAA).

We studied 28 individuals from a four-generation Chilean family (ADC54) including 13 affected individuals with cataracts, microcornea and/or corneal opacity. All individuals underwent a complete ophthalmologic exam. We screened with a panel of polymorphic DNA markers for known loci that cause autosomal dominant cataracts, if mutated, and refined the locus using the ABI Prism Linkage Mapping Set Version 2.5, and calculated two-point lod scores. Novel PCR primers were designed for the three coding exons, including intron-exon borders, of the candidate gene alpha A crystallin (CRYAA). Clinically,

Histopathology and molecular cytogenetics of a corneal opacity associated with the trisomy 8 mosaic syndrome (46,XY/47,XY, +8).

The trisomy 8 mosaic syndrome (Tr8MS), karyotype 46,XY/47,XY, +8, is a rare multisystem disorder that may be associated with corneal opacity. We report the case of a dysmorphic infant with multiple congenital abnormalities referred to our unit with a congenital corneal opacity. Subsequent chromosomal analysis of peripheral leucocytes demonstrated constitutional Tr8MS. At 4 years of age, lamellar keratoplasty was performed. Histological examination confirmed the lesion to be consistent with a corneal choristoma. Cytogenetic studies using in situ hybridisation techniques showed the presence of t
