Irregular Astigmatism and Higher-Order Aberrations in Eyes With Dry Eye Disease.

Visual disturbances were included in the definition of dry eye disease in the 2007 Dry Eye Workshop report. As a result, quality of vision (QoV) in dry eye patients has received increased attention. Corneal topography and wavefront sensors have been used to objectively and quantitatively evaluate optical quality, with data showing increases in irregular astigmatism and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in dry eye patients. Furthermore, ocular optical characteristics are influenced by the tear film, which constantly fluctuates over time. Therefore, dynamic quantitative assessments of optical qual

Accelerated versus conventional corneal collagen cross-linking in patients with keratoconus: an intrapatient comparative study.

PURPOSE: To compare the outcomes of the conventional and accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) in patients with bilateral progressive keratoconus (KC). METHODS: Fifteen consecutive patients with bilateral progressive KC were enrolled. In each patient, the fellow eyes were randomly assigned to the conventional CXL (3 mW/cm2 for 30 min) or accelerated CXL (ACXL) (9 mW/cm2 for 10 min) groups. Manifest refraction; uncorrected and corrected distant visual acuity; maximum and mean keratometry; corneal hysteresis and corneal resistance factor; endothelial cell density and morphology; cent

Early diagnosis of subclinical keratoconus by wavefront parameters using Scheimpflug, Placido and Hartmann-Shack based devices.

PURPOSE: To compare the accuracy of three devices (Pentacam, Sirius and OPD-Scan III) to differentiate subclinical keratoconus from normal corneas by wavefront parameters. METHODS: Two hundred and seventeen patients were enrolled in three groups [68 normal, 79 subclinical keratoconus (SKCN) and 70 KCN eyes] in this prospective diagnostic test study. Wavefront indices were evaluated between the groups using Pentacam, Sirius and OPD-Scan III. The accuracy of the parameters was determined by measuring the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for each group. RESULTS: Fron

Wavefront properties of the anterior and posterior corneal surface after transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy in myopia.

The present study aimed to evaluate the changes of corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TransPRK) in patients with myopia. A total of 80 eyes of 80 patients with myopia with or without astigmatism were evaluated. Prior to and 1 year after the surgery, uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity in logMAR were assessed. Wavefront aberrations on the anterior surface of the cornea, as well as the posterior and total cornea, were measured via Pentacam. The HOA of the anterior surface and total values of spherical and coma aberrations incre

Vergence-based ocular wavefront expansions in diopters: orthogonal functions, clinical metrics, and visualization tools.

We introduce two families of vergence functions to express ocular wavefront aberrations in diopters, bridging aberrometry, and clinical refraction. First, we build a fully orthogonal vergence basis (V~), analogous to Zernike polynomials, which preserves mode orthogonality and supports unbiased coefficient statistics. In our VL-VH basis (V), a clear separation between low-degree and high-degree prevents the intrusion of low-degree terms into high-degree modes, which could otherwise hinder direct clinical interpretation. The vergence function expansions in both bases are derived from wavefront s

Structural and Optical Corneal Alterations in Inactive Herpetic Keratitis: A Quantitative Tomographic Analysis.

PURPOSE: To quantitatively characterize the structural and optical changes in the cornea in inactive herpetic keratitis and, secondarily, to evaluate whether these parameters vary according to lesion location and depth of vascularization. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included 37 patients with unilateral inactive stromal and epithelial herpetic keratitis. Affected eyes were compared with contralateral healthy eyes. Corneal tomography was used to assess corneal thickness, epithelial and stromal profiles, anterior and posterior elevation, and higher-order aberrations (HOAs). L

Effect of biaxial versus coaxial microincision cataract surgery on optical quality of the cornea.

CONTEXT: Visual function is determined by a combination of the cornea, which has a larger effect and internal aberrations generated by the intraocular lens and those induced by the surgery. These corneal refractive changes are related to the location and size of the corneal incision. The smaller the incision, the lower the aberrations and the better the optical quality. AIMS: To compare the effect of uneventful coaxial versus biaxial microincision cataract surgery (MICS) on the corneal aberrations. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Retrospective interventional nonrandomized comparative case study compris

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and visual outcome of wavefront-supported photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for the correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism in patients with suspected keratoconus. METHODS: Forty eyes of 20 patients with myopia -4.0 to -8.0 diopters (D) (mean: -6.25 +/- 1.04 D), cylinder -1.0 to -2.50 D (mean: -1.61 +/- 0.71 D), and corneal thickness 440 to 488 microm were treated with wavefront-supported PRK. Quantifying natural higher order aberration(s) in emmetropic human eyes and objectively evaluating retinal image quality.

AIM: This study aimed to quantify the internal, corneal and total higher order aberrations (HOAs) in the healthy human eye using ray tracing technology in bright and dim light conditions. The study also aimed to evaluate the retinal image quality and contrast modulation at different spatial frequencies, objectively using image-quality metrics derived from wavefront aberrations. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional prospective observational study was conducted on 521 emmetropic young adults. HOAs including coma, trefoil, spherical aberration and secondary astigmatism were measured separately for the

Higher order aberrations in keratoconus‏.

INTRODUCTION: Keratoconus is a progressive disorder of the cornea that causes thinning (Sedaghat et al. in Sci Rep 11(1):11971, 2021), ectasia, and irregular astigmatism, resulting in poor visual acuity that cannot be corrected with standard sphero-cylindrical spectacle lenses. One feature distinguishing keratoconic corneas is ocular aberrations, manifesting up to five or six times the amount of higher-order aberrations than a normal, healthy eye. These aberrations can cause visual disturbances even at the very early stages of the disease. METHODS: In the past, a diagnosis was derived from cl

[Functional results of contact lens correction and penetrating keratoplasty in keratoconus. Report 2. Wavefront analysis].

Comparative analysis of optic aberrations in contact lens correction and after penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) in keratoconus are presented. 117 patients (219 eyes) with stage I-IV keratoconus, wearing rigid gas-permeable contact lenses (RPCL), and 60 patients (64 eyes) after PKP were examined using OPD Scan (NIDEK, Japan) to assess aberration characteristics. Total optic aberrations and higher-order aberrations of ocular and corneal wavefront were significantly increased after PKP compared to those in patients with I-III stage keratoconus wearing RGCL. Astigmatic aberrations after surgery are
