Balanced Basic Multicellular Unit Activity in Cortical Bone of Ovariohysterectomized Rabbits.

It is well documented that the activation frequency of basic multicellular units (BMUs) is increased following menopause, but it is unclear if a negative BMU balance also contributes to osteoporosis-related bone loss or how remodeling dynamics are altered to maintain or disrupt BMU balance. Time-lapsed imaging was used to track individual BMUs in cortical bone and investigate their spatio-temporal balance in a rabbit model of osteoporosis. The distal tibiae of female New Zealand White rabbits that received ovariohysterectomy (OVH) or SHAM surgery were scanned in vivo using synchrotron radiatio

Extraction and untargeted analysis of metabolome from undemineralised cortical bone matrix.

Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) untargeted metabolomics has become the gold standard for the profiling of low-molecular-weight compounds. Recently, this discipline has raised great interest in forensic sciences, especially in the field of toxicology and for post-mortem interval estimation. The current study aims at evaluating three extraction protocols and two LC-MS/MS assays run in both positive and negative modes, to identify the most suitable method to conduct post-mortem metabolomic profiling of bone tissue. A fragment of the anterior tibia of a 82 ye

Damage analysis of human cortical bone under compressive and tensile loadings.

Developing advanced fracture tools can increase the understanding of crack growth trajectories in human cortical bone. The present study investigates fracture micromechanics of human cortical bone under compressive and tensile loadings utilizing a phase field method. We construct two-dimensional finite element models from cortical microstructure of a human tibia cross section. We apply compression on the cortical bone models to create compressive microcracks. Then, we simulate the fracture of these models under tension to discover influential parameters on microcracks formation and post-yieldi

Canine root/cortical bone relation (CRCR) and the orthodontic tooth movement.

This observational study evaluates three-dimensionally the relation between the root of maxillary canine and overlying labial cortical plate of bone during orthodontic canine retraction. Eighty-four bilateral maxillary canines in 42 patients were retracted in the extraction space of first premolars, using conventional orthodontic NiTi retraction spring delivering 150gm. Three-dimensional evaluation at the cusp tip, root apex, and the overlying cortical bone was done based on Classification of Root/Cortical bone relation (CRCR) before and after canine retraction. 168 observations of the canines

Distal clavicle fractures with "superior intact cortical bone": minimally invasive surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Distal clavicle fractures represent 12%-26% of all clavicle fractures. For unstable cases, surgical fixation is the preferred method of treatment. To date, there is still controversy regarding the best fixation method with a high reoperation and complication rate reported. The purpose of this article is to describe a minimally invasive method for reduction and stabilization of displaced distal clavicle fractures, using cortical buttons. SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: After standard preoperative preparation, a 3-cm incision is made at the coracoclavicular area. Using both coracoid and clavi

Cortical Bone Trajectory Instrumentation with Vertebroplasty for Osteoporotic Thoracolumbar Compression Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic spinal fractures commonly occur in elderly patients with low bone mineral density. In these cases, percutaneous vertebroplasty or percutaneous kyphoplasty can provide significant pain relief and improve mobility. However, studies have reported both the recurrence of vertebral compression fractures at the index level after vertebroplasty and the development of new vertebral fractures at the adjacent level that occur without any additional trauma. Pedicle screw fixation combined with percutaneous vertebroplasty has been proposed as an effective procedure for addressing o

Simulation with 3D Neuronavigation for Learning Cortical Bone Trajectory Screw Placement.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Learning a new technique in neurosurgery is a big challenge especially for trainees. In recent years, simulations and simulators got into the focus as a teaching tool. Our objective is to propose a simulator for placement of cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screws to improve results and reduce complications. METHODS: We have created a platform consisting of a sawbone navigated with a 3D fluoroscope to familiarize our trainees and consultants with CBT technique and later implement it in our department. Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS) and Phys

Regional maps of rib cortical bone thickness and cross-sectional geometry.

Here we present detailed regional bone thickness and cross-sectional measurements from full adult ribs using high resolution CT scans processed with a cortical bone mapping technique. Sixth ribs from 33 subjects ranging from 24 to 99 years of age were used to produce average cortical bone thickness maps and to provide average ± 1SD corridors for expected cross-section properties (cross-sectional areas and inertial moments) as a function of rib length. Results obtained from CT data were validated at specific rib locations using direct measurements from cut sections. Individual thickness measure

Cortical bone-derived stem cell therapy reduces apoptosis after myocardial infarction.

Ischemic heart diseases such as myocardial infarction (MI) are the largest contributors to cardiovascular disease worldwide. The resulting cardiac cell death impairs function of the heart and can lead to heart failure and death. Reperfusion of the ischemic tissue is necessary but causes damage to the surrounding tissue by reperfusion injury. Cortical bone stem cells (CBSCs) have been shown to increase pump function and decrease scar size in a large animal swine model of MI. To investigate the potential mechanism for these changes, we hypothesized that CBSCs were altering cardiac cell death aft

Inducible Wnt16 inactivation: WNT16 regulates cortical bone thickness in adult mice.

Substantial progress has been made in the therapeutic reduction of vertebral fracture risk in patients with osteoporosis, but non-vertebral fracture risk has been improved only marginally. Human genetic studies demonstrate that the WNT16 locus is a major determinant of cortical bone thickness and non-vertebral fracture risk and mouse models with life-long Wnt16 inactivation revealed that WNT16 is a key regulator of cortical thickness. These studies, however, could not exclude that the effect of Wnt16 inactivation on cortical thickness might be caused by early developmental and/or growth effect

Deterioration of Cortical Bone Microarchitecture: Critical Component of Renal Osteodystrophy Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Cortical bone is a significant determinant of bone strength and its deterioration contributes to bone fragility. Thin cortices and increased cortical porosity have been noted in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but the "Turnover Mineralization Volume" classification of renal osteodystrophy does not emphasize cortical bone as a key parameter. We aimed to assess trabecular and cortical bone microarchitecture by histomorphometry and micro-CT in patients with CKD G5 and 5D (dialysis). METHODS: Transiliac bone biopsies were performed in 14 patients undergoing kidney transpla

Long Bone Union Accurately Predicted by Cortical Bridging within 4 Months.

BACKGROUND: Previous retrospective research found that the presence or absence of bridging callus within 4 months postoperatively discriminated accurately between eventual union and nonunion of fractures of the tibial shaft. However, there remains no consensus regarding early prognostication of long bone nonunion. We prospectively assessed the accuracy and reliability of the presence of any bridging callus within 4 months in a cohort that was expanded to include both tibial and femoral shaft fractures. METHODS: We identified 194 consecutive fractures of the shaft of the tibia (OTA/AO type 42-

Can cone beam CT predict the hardness of interradicular cortical bone?

OBJECTIVES: Orthodontic mini implants can be inserted at the interradicular site. The bone quality at this site may affect the stability and anchorage of the implant. Bone density is clinically evaluated by Hounsfield units (HU) obtained from cone beam CT (CBCT). The objective of this study was to determine the correlations between HU, microhardness and cortical bone thickness of interradicular site at various segments (anterior/posterior) and aspects (buccal/lingual) of both jaws in a swine model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight mandible and maxilla swine bones were scanned by CBCT. The HU and

Osteoblast-derived WNT16 represses osteoclastogenesis and prevents cortical bone fragility fractures.

The WNT16 locus is a major determinant of cortical bone thickness and nonvertebral fracture risk in humans. The disability, mortality and costs caused by osteoporosis-induced nonvertebral fractures are enormous. We demonstrate here that Wnt16-deficient mice develop spontaneous fractures as a result of low cortical thickness and high cortical porosity. In contrast, trabecular bone volume is not altered in these mice. Mechanistic studies revealed that WNT16 is osteoblast derived and inhibits human and mouse osteoclastogenesis both directly by acting on osteoclast progenitors and indirectly by in

Auditory brainstem and cortical potentials following bone-anchored hearing aid stimulation.

Patients suffering from conductive or mixed hearing loss and Single-Sided Deafness may benefit from implantable hearing devices relying on bone conducted auditory stimulation. However, with only passively cooperative patients, objective methods are needed to estimate the aided and unaided pure-tone audiogram. This study focuses on the feasibility aspect of an electrophysiological determination of the hearing thresholds with bone-anchored hearing aid stimulation. Therefore, 10 normal-hearing subjects were provided with a Baha Intenso (Cochlear Ltd.) which was temporarily connected to the Baha S

Cortical tibial bone graft for nasal augmentation: donor site short scar.

The nose is the central part of the face and the most prominent facial feature. Augmentation rhinoplasty is one of the most exciting and arduous techniques for plastic surgeon and patient. Fourteen cases of augmentation rhinoplasty with cortical tibial bone graft are presented. An endonasal approach was used in 13 cases and an open approach in one case, with a donor site short scar (1.5 cm) in every case. The average follow up was 2 years and no significant bone resorption was observed. No remarkable complications or complications requiring surgery were noted during the follow up. The cosmetic

Bone strength in multiple sclerosis: cortical midtibial speed-of-sound assessment.

It has been previously suggested that multiple sclerosis (MS) patients are at increased risk for osteoporosis due to reduced mobility, decreased exposure to sunlight and recurrent steroid treatment. In order to systematically evaluate bone strength we assessed 256 MS patients (171 females, 75 males) through quantitative ultrasound measurement of cortical bone. Tibial speed of sound (SOS, m/sec) was measured at midpoint of the tibial shaft using a Soundscan 2000 (Myriad Ultrasound Systems, Rehovot, Israel) and results were compared to age- and gender-matched population norms. T-score distributi

Ovariectomy-induced changes in aged beagles: histomorphometry of rib cortical bone.

Bone loss associated with estrogen depletion is well documented in cancellous bone but less well characterized in cortical bone. The effects of ovariectomy on the aged beagle skeleton were studied by histomorphometric analysis of the cortical bone in sequential rib biopsies. Biopsies were taken from each ovariectomized or sham-operated dog at the time of surgery and at 1, 4, and 8.5 months after surgery. Just prior to each postoperative biopsy, tetracycline, calcein, and xylenol orange, respectively, were administered by a fluorochrome labeling procedure (2d-10d-2d) to provide markers of bone

Mechanisms of cortical bone loss from the metacarpal following digital amputation.

Immobilization bone loss, whether due to whole body immobilization or local causes, is associated with an initial rapid phase of trabecular bone loss, but the long-term effects of immobilization on cortical bone are not well described. We have studied metacarpal morphometry in 16 men who had undergone partial or complete traumatic digital amputations 4-71 years earlier. Noninvolved metacarpals from the affected and unaffected hands were used as controls. Cortical bone width was significantly reduced in the metacarpals proximal to the amputated digits (P = 0.001). In the 7 subjects who suffered

Cortical bone material / compositional changes in children with mild osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable connective-tissue disorder characterized by skeletal fragility (amongst other manifestations) despite relatively preserved bone mineral density (BMD), suggesting that alterations in bone quality play a central role. Intrinsic matrix defects, including disrupted collagen assembly, altered enzymatic cross-linking, changes in matrix hydration, and disturbed mineral chemistry, are consistently observed and contribute to impaired mechanical competence. Although Raman spectroscopy is well suited to probe these compositional features, its application in OI
