Antiaphrodisiacs in pierid butterflies: a theme with variation!

Male Pieris napi butterflies previously have been shown to synthesize and transfer an antiaphrodisiac, methyl salicylate (MeS), to females at mating. This substance curtails courtship and decreases the likelihood of female remating. Here, we show that similar systems occur in Pieris rapae and Pieris brassicae. In P. rapae, 13C-labeling studies showed that males utilize the amino acids phenylalanine and tryptophan as precursors to MeS and indole, respectively. These volatiles are transferred to females at mating and function as antiaphrodisiacs, as demonstrated by field tests entailing painting

Parental Social Environment Has no Effect on Offspring Development in the Dung Beetle: A Test of Adult Sex Ratio Effects.

The adult sex ratio (ASR) is a key demographic parameter that shapes sexual selection and social interactions. While ASR variation drives profound behavioral plasticity within a generation, it remains unclear whether parental experience of skewed ASRs influences offspring development via transgenerational plasticity (TGP), and if so, which of the two core nongenetic pathways: pre-zygotic germline-mediated information transfer and post-zygotic parental investment, predominates. To disentangle these mechanistically distinct pathways, we conducted a controlled egg-transplantation experiment in th

Exposure of Adult Female Mice to Low Doses of di(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate Alone or in an Environmental Phthalate Mixture: Evaluation of Reproductive Behavior and Underlying Neural Mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: We have previously shown that adult male mice exposure to low doses of an ubiquitous endocrine disruptor, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), alters courtship behavior. OBJECTIVE: The effects of adult exposure to low doses of DEHP alone or in an environmental phthalate mixture on estrous cyclicity, reproductive behavior, and underlying neural structures were analyzed in female mice. METHODS: Two-month-old C57BL/6J females were exposed orally for 6 wk to DEHP alone (0, 5 or 50μg/kg/d) or to DEHP (5μg/kg/d) in a phthalate mixture. Estrous cyclicity was analyzed in intact mice, and b

High-speed camera recordings uncover previously unidentified elements of zebrafish mating behaviors integral to successful fertilization.

The mating behavior of teleost fish consists of a sequence of stereotyped actions. By observing mating of zebrafish under high-speed video, we analyzed and characterized a behavioral cascade leading to successful fertilization. When paired, a male zebrafish engages the female by oscillating his body in high frequency (quivering). In response, the female pauses swimming and bends her body (freezing). Subsequently, the male contorts his trunk to enfold the female's trunk. This behavior is known as wrap around. Here, we found that wrap around behavior consists of two previously unidentified compo

Venom and Social Behavior: The Potential of Using Spiders to Evaluate the Evolution of Sociality under High Risk.

Risks of sociality, including competition and conspecific aggression, are particularly pronounced in venomous invertebrates such as arachnids. Spiders show a wide range of sociality, with differing levels of cannibalism and other types of social aggression. To have the greatest chance of surviving interactions with conspecifics, spiders must learn to assess and respond to risk. One of the major ways risk assessment is studied in spiders is via venom metering, in which spiders choose how much venom to use based on prey and predator characteristics. While venom metering in response to prey acqui

Facial attractiveness, symmetry and cues of good genes.

Cues of phenotypic condition should be among those used by women in their choice of mates. One marker of better phenotypic condition is thought to be symmetrical bilateral body and facial features. However, it is not clear whether women use symmetry as the primary cue in assessing the phenotypic quality of potential mates or whether symmetry is correlated with other facial markers affecting physical attractiveness. Using photographs of men's faces, for which facial symmetry had been measured, we found a relationship between women's attractiveness ratings of these faces and symmetry, but the su

Measurement of Drosophila Reproductive Behaviors.

Courtship behaviors in Drosophila melanogaster are innate and contain highly stereotyped but also experience- and state-dependent elements. They have been the subject of intense study for more than 100 years. The power of Drosophila as a genetic experimental system has allowed the dissection of reproductive behaviors at a molecular, cellular, and physiological level. As a result, we know a great deal about how flies perceive sensory cues from potential mates, how this information is integrated in higher brain centers to execute reproductive decisions, and how state and social contexts modulate

Sex Differences in Voyeuristic and Exhibitionistic Interests: Exploring the Mediating Roles of Sociosexuality and Sexual Compulsivity from an Evolutionary Perspective.

Sociosexuality and sexual compulsivity predict sex differences in voyeuristic interest in the population. In this study, we used a sample of 1113 participants from the UK (46% men) to consider whether sociosexuality and sexual compulsivity interacted to explain these sex differences and whether this relationship extended to the related domain of exhibitionism. In doing so, we tested novel predictions derived from an evolutionary perspective which views voyeuristic and exhibitionistic interest as manifestations of a short-term mating strategy. Participants reported their levels of repulsion tow

Interpersonal style moderates the effect of dating violence on symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Over a quarter of young women have experienced some form of violence within a dating relationship. The experience of dating violence is associated with problems in psychological functioning, including symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, not all women who experience dating violence exhibit anxious or depressive symptoms. One factor that may influence symptom expression is interpersonal style. In this study, we examined the main and moderating effects of dimensions of interpersonal style (dominance and warmth) on the association between dating violence and symptoms of anxiety and depres

Drosophila melanogaster Fly Odors Alone are not Sufficient to Attract other Flies.

Pheromone-mediated behaviors are crucial for the survival and reproduction of Drosophila melanogaster, governing activities such as courtship, mating, and aggression. While many studies have focused on short-range interactions involving direct contact between flies, the role of olfactory cues alone in this attraction remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the behavioral responses of virgin male and female D. melanogaster to conspecific headspace using a Y-maze. We tested fly responses under various environmental conditions (e.g., in the presence or absence of food odors and

Digital Forms of Dating Violence: What School Nurses Need to Know.

A substantial amount of U.S. teenagers experience physical or sexual abuse within their romantic relationship. With recent technological advances, teenage dating violence can also be perpetrated digitally by harassing or controlling a romantic partner through the Internet or mobile phone. School nurses are naturally positioned to act as first responders for victims of an abusive romantic relationship. As online and offline forms of dating violence are often intertwined, it is imperative that school nurses are able to identify different types of digital dating violence as this could signal the

Direct and indirect effects of neighborhood characteristics on the perpetration of dating violence across adolescence.

Neighborhood context plays a role in the development of adolescent health risk behaviors, but few studies have investigated the influence of neighborhoods on the perpetration of dating violence. This longitudinal study examined the direct effects of risky neighborhood structural and physical characteristics on trajectories of the perpetration of dating violence, tested whether collective efficacy mediated these relationships, and determined if the effects varied by the sex of the adolescent. Adolescent data are from a multi-wave longitudinal study from grades 8 to 12; neighborhood data were co

Hearing regulates Drosophila aggression.

Aggression is a universal social behavior important for the acquisition of food, mates, territory, and social status. Aggression in Drosophila is context-dependent and can thus be expected to involve inputs from multiple sensory modalities. Here, we use mechanical disruption and genetic approaches in Drosophila melanogaster to identify hearing as an important sensory modality in the context of intermale aggressive behavior. We demonstrate that neuronal silencing and targeted knockdown of hearing genes in the fly's auditory organ elicit abnormal aggression. Further, we show that exposure to cou

A biography of James Ramsay Hunt (1874-1937).

James Ramsay Hunt (1874-1937) was a pre-eminent twentieth-century American neurologist. The name of Ramsay Hunt is known today because several neurological disorders bear his name, including the herpetic geniculate ganglion syndrome and a form of ataxia and myoclonus. Despite his importance in the field of neurology, few biographical details have been recorded about Hunt's life. One of the authors of this report recently located Hunt's daughter. This biographical sketch was based on interviews conducted with her and review of documents in her possession, including letters written by Hunt. Deta

Artificial Insemination in Axolotl.

In axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum), fertilization takes place internally. After courtship, the male axolotl deposits spermatophores, which the female takes up into her cloaca in order to fertilize eggs internally. The success of axolotl breedings is subject to several poorly understood factors including age, pairing, and genotype. In some cases, individuals are unable to breed naturally despite having significant scientific value. Assisted reproductive technologies represent one approach to maintaining stocks of such individuals, as well as supplementing natural breedings of laboratory stocks.H

Elastic energy storage and the efficiency of movement.

Movement is an integral part of animal biology. It enables organisms to escape from danger, acquire food, and perform courtship displays. Changing the speed or vertical position of a body requires mechanical energy. This energy is typically provided by the biological motor, striated muscle. Striated muscle uses chemical (metabolic) energy to produce force, to move this force over a distance to do work, and to do this work within some time to generate power. The metabolic energy consumed in producing these mechanical outputs is a major component of an organism's energy budget, particularly duri

Detection of infrasound and linear acceleration in fishes.

Fishes have an acute sensitivity to extremely low-frequency linear acceleration, or infrasound, even down to below 1 Hz. The otolith organs are the sensory system responsible for this ability. The hydrodynamic noise generated by swimming fishes is mainly in the infrasound range, and may be important in courtship and prey predator interactions. Intense infrasound has a deterring effect on some species, and has a potential in acoustic barriers. We hypothesize that the pattern of ambient infrasound in the oceans may be used for orientation in migratory fishes, and that pelagic fishes may detect c

Sexual dimorphisms in the brainstem of the green anole lizard.

Male green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) court females by extending a bright red throat fan, called a dewlap. The dewlap is larger in males than in females who do not display the structure in the context of courtship. The ceratohyoid muscle and second ceratobranchial cartilage which control dewlap extension are significantly larger in male than in female anoles. Neurons innervating the ceratohyoid muscle were retrogradely labeled by injecting the muscle with fast blue and were found to be located in the vagal portion of nucleus ambiguus (Amb X), as well as in the region containing the glossopha
