Orthodontic Treatment and Craniocervical Posture in Patients with Temporomandibular Disorders: An Observational Study.

Orthodontic treatment acts through the application of forces and/or by stimulating and redirecting the functional forces within the craniofacial complex. Considering the interrelationship between craniomandibular and craniocervical systems, this intervention may alter craniocervical posture. Thus, our aim is to (a) compare craniocervical posture, hyoid bone position, and craniofacial morphology before, after, and also in the contention phase at least one year after the orthodontic treatment, in patients with temporomandibular disorders and (b) to verify whether the presence of condylar displac

The functional relationship between the craniomandibular system, cervical spine, and the sacroiliac joint: a preliminary investigation.

The hypothesis of a functional coupling between the muscles of the craniomandibular system and the muscles of other body areas is still controversial. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine whether there is a relationship between the craniomandibular system, the craniocervical system and the sacropelvic region. To test this hypothesis, the prevalence and localization of dysfunction of the cervical spine and the sacroiliac joint were examined in a prospective, experimental trial. Twenty healthy students underwent an artificial occlusal interference, which caused an occlusal interference

Provocation testing to assist craniomandibular pain diagnosis.

Patients with TMD often present with complex pain symptoms, which can make it difficult to reach a diagnosis. Usually palpation of the masticatory muscles and TM joints, range of motion testing and imaging are used in the diagnostic process. Sometimes it is necessary to evaluate the jaw moving muscles from a functional prospective because they cannot be palpated due to inaccessibility or because they have other structures that are more superficial to them. In these instances, provocation testing can be a helpful adjunct in providing some insight into what is occurring in the area being tested

Tuina therapy for temporomandibular joint disorder syndrome: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) is common in clinic at present, which seriously affects the mental health and quality of life of patients. With the development of society, the incidence of TMD is gradually increasing. At present, there are many treatment methods, Tuina as a characteristic traditional Chinese medicine therapy, clinical treatment of TMD has a significant effect. In recent years, there are many clinical studies on Tuina in the treatment of TMD, but the clinical efficacy of Tuina in the treatment of TMD has not been systematically evaluated. In this study, we s

Orthodontic treatment in long-term survivors after pediatric bone marrow transplantation.

Children treated for childhood cancers with both radiation and chemotherapy often exhibit disturbances in dental development. A retrospective analysis of treatment outcome in 10 orthodontically treated children was performed. A questionnaire was sent to each child's orthodontist, and 5 orthodontists reported that the patient's medical condition influenced their choice of treatment plan. Three orthodontists, all treating patients with severely disturbed root development, reported using lighter forces than they used with the average patient. With regard to complications related to orthodontic tr

[Occlusion and posture: is there evidence of correlation?].

The observation that the masticatory system and the postural body regulating system are anatomically and functionally related, has led to postulate several hypotheses of correlation between occlusal and postural disturbances. In the last decade, these arguments have gained a great social impact, also because they have been broadly spread by the mass-media. As a consequence, there has been a growing number of patients seeking concomitant occlusal and postural treatments. The aim of this study was to review critically the current evidence of correlation between the two systems; this in order to

EMG differences between weak and strong myogenous CMD patients and healthy controls.

Electromyographic and clinical characteristics of 42 myogenous craniomandibular disorder (CMD) patients were related to 40 healthy control subjects. Surface EMG recordings were obtained from the masseter and the temporal muscles. The clinical examination included active maximum mouth opening, endfeel distance, active laterotrusion and lateral endfeel distance, dental abrasion, the presence of a lateral slide (RCP-ICP) and the amount of static pain. Orthopantomographic X-rays were available from 32 CMD patients for measuring the condylar and ramus asymmetry. Compared to the control group lower

Differentiation between musculoligamentous, dentoalveolar, and neurologically based craniofacial pain with a diagnostic questionnaire.

A self-administered questionnaire consisting of 21 questions, diagrams for chief pain location, and a digital pain scale was used prospectively to sort 92 patients with orofacial pain into three categories: (1) musculoligamentous (ie, temporomandibular disorders); (2) neurologically based (ie, migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, tension-type headache, cluster headache, and atypical facial pain); and (3) dentoalveolar pain. Sensitivity, specificity, as well as negative and positive predictive values suggest that this questionnaire may be used reliably to identify patients with orofacial pain that f

Surgical correction of nasal obstruction in the treatment of mild sleep apnoea: importance of cephalometry in predicting outcome.

BACKGROUND: A study was undertaken to determine if cephalometric radiographs could identify those who will benefit from nasal surgery in patients with a sleep apnoea hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS) and chronic nasal obstruction. METHODS: Fourteen patients with SAHS were enrolled. Those with normal posterior airway space and mandibular plane to hyoid bone distances on preoperative cephalometric radiographs were matched with those with abnormal cephalometry for the frequency of sleep disordered breathing and body mass index. Polysomnographic studies (all subjects) and nasal resistance measurements (n

Anatomical versus functional classification of ankyloglossia and their association with temporomandibular joint disorders in adults: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Restrictive lingual frenula, commonly referred to as ankyloglossia, are well documented in pediatric literature, with established impacts on breastfeeding, swallowing, reflux, speech, maxillary development, breathing, and sleep in children. However, data on its effects in adolescents and adults remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between restrictive lingual frenula and the development of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in an adult population. METHODS: A total of 129 patients (aged 18-80 years; 41 males and 88 females) were assessed for TMD signs and

A comparison of the craniofacial morphology in 2-month-old unoperated infants with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate, and unilateral incomplete cleft lip.

This paper reports a cephalometric analysis of the craniofacial morphology in infants with unoperated unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCCLP) and unoperated unilateral incomplete cleft lip (UICL). The purpose of the study was to determine the nature and extent of the craniofacial deviations in UCCLP as compared to the morphology in UICL, which has previously been shown to be close to normal. The samples comprised 82 infants with UCCLP (58 males and 24 females) and 75 with UICL (48 males and 27 females). The mean age was about 2 months in both groups. The cephalometric analysis of cran

Severity-Graded MRI-Detected TMJ Effusion Is Associated With Pain and Dysfunction in Temporomandibular Disorder Patients.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) effusion on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered a radiologic sign of intra-articular inflammation; however, its clinical relevance to pain and mandibular dysfunction remains inconsistent. OBJECTIVE(S): The objective of this study is to determine whether severity-graded MRI-detected TMJ effusion is associated with pain intensity and dysfunction in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS: This retrospective clinical imaging study included 221 patients with TMJ arthralgia diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD

External Validation of a Clinical Prediction Tool for the Use of Manual Therapy in Patients With Temporomandibular Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Manual therapy (MT) is frequently used to manage temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), yet patient responses vary significantly. Predictive models may help clinicians tailor treatments to individual patients. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to externally validate a previously developed prediction model for identifying patients with TMDs who are more likely to benefit from MT. Additionally, new prognostic models to predict outcomes at a one-month follow-up were developed. METHODS: A cohort of 124 adults with a diagnosis of a TMD received a four-week MT program (one ses
