Illness perceptions, coping expectancies, rumination and self-stigma are important factors in the management of these health complaints and factors closely linked to health literacy (HL). The aims of the study were to identify helpful elements in a brief intervention (BI) targeting HL regarding common musculoskeletal and mental health complaints and to identify patient perceptions of how the intervention was helpful and whether it affected their su

Patient outcomes and experience of a task-shared screening and brief intervention service for problem substance use in South African emergency centres: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) programmes have resulted in generally positive outcomes in healthcare settings, particularly for problem alcohol use, yet implementation is hampered by barriers such as concerns regarding the burden on healthcare professionals. In low-resourced settings, task-sharing approaches can reduce this burden by using non-professional healthcare workers, yet data are scarce regarding the outcomes and acceptability to patients within a SBIRT service. This study aims to evaluate patient-reported outcomes, patient acceptability, p

Mindfulness in Pregnancy: A Brief Intervention for Women at Risk.

Social determinants of health and inequalities in health outcomes are understudied areas. The intersectionality of race and socioeconomic status has been shown to contribute to chronic stress, stress has been shown to be associated with PTB, yet the mechanisms that affect pregnancy outcomes have not been explicit. Mindfulness-based Interventions that address stress reduction during pregnancy may improve quality of life during pregnancy, perhaps enhancing resi

The Impact of Brief Interventions on Functioning Among those Demonstrating Anxiety, Depressive, and Adjustment Disorder Symptoms in Primary Care: The Effectiveness of the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) Model.

Limited scalability combined with limited opportunities for patients to receive evidence-based interventions in traditional behavioral health treatment models for anxiety and depression creates a gap in access to adequate care. Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) is one model of treatment in which behavioral health consultants (BHC) work directly within primary care settings, but there is limited evidence regarding the effectiveness of this model of care. The functional outcomes and appointment characteristics of Beneficiaries (N = 5402) within the military healthcare system were assessed. T

The adaptation of an evidence-based brief intervention for substance-using adolescents and their caregivers.

Objective: Adolescent substance use is prevalent and associated with additional risk behaviours. Research shows that evidence-based brief interventions with adolescents and their main caregiver may mitigate the progression of substance use. Method: We used the ADAPT-ITT framework to develop a needs-based, culturally-sensitive intervention. Five focus groups with adolescents (n = 30), three focus groups with separate main caregivers of adolescents who use substances (n = 21), key informant interviews and an expert meeting, were conducted. Results: Adolescents described the need to decrease risk

Crisis management during "live" supervision: clinical and instructional matters.

In this article, we illustrate two examples of "live" supervision with marriage and family therapy trainees whose clients presented in the therapy room in immediate crisis. The case examples, one a client with suicidal thoughts and the other a parent who had struck her child, demonstrate how the university-based therapy team managed the recursive clinical and supervision processes that unfolded during the sessions. We present the case examples from the perspective of both supervisees and supervisor, discussing how our different experiences of the supervision unfolded in real time. Case discuss

Long-term treatment of chronically suicidal patients.

Chronically suicidal persons with chronic psychiatric disorders (dysthymia, recurrent depression, alcoholism/addiction, schizophrenia, personality disorders) challenge the experience and resourcefulness of psychiatrists. The author reviews his 30 years of experience with these patients and makes six recommendations for long-term treatment: (1) a team approach using consultants and ancillary therapists, (2) flexible therapeutic plans combining medication with psychotherapy, (3) care in monitoring transference and countertransference, (4) brief hospitalization at turning points in the patient's

Somatostatin analogues do not prevent carcinoid crisis.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoid crisis is a life-threatening syndrome of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) characterized by dramatic blood pressure fluctuation, arrhythmias, and bronchospasm. In the era of booming anti-tumor therapeutics, this has become more important since associated stresses can trigger carcinoid crisis. Somatostatin analogues (SSTA) have been recommended for prophylactic administration before intervention procedures for functioning NETs. However, the efficacy is still controversial. The aim of this article is to review efficacy of SSTA for preventing carcinoid crisis. MATERIALS AND METH
