[Distribution of species from genus Anopheles (Diptera, Culicidae) in the State of Maranhão, Brazil].

We studied the distribution and diversity of Anopheles species in 123 counties (municipalities) in the State of Maranhão, Brazil. The basic method consisted of capturing female specimens inside and around human dwellings between 6 PM and 6 AM from January 1992 to December 2001. A total of 84,467 specimens belonging to 24 species were captured, with a predominance of A. triannulatus sensu lato (20,788), A. darlingi (19,083), A. nuneztovari (16,884), A. albitarsis s.l. (14,352), A. aquasalis (8.202), and A. evansae (2,885). The other 18 species together accounted for only 2.7% of the total. The

The potential of Aedes triseriatus (Diptera: Culicidae) as an enzootic vector of West Nile virus.

The susceptibility of Aedes triseriatus (Say) (Diptera: Culicidae) to low levels of West Nile virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, WNV) was determined and compared with that of Culex pipiens L. to assess the likelihood of its participation in an enzootic cycle involving mammals. Ae. triseriatus and Cx. pipiens were exposed to WNV by feeding on baby chickens with WNV serum titers ranging from 10(4.1 +/- 0.1) to 10(8.6 +/- 0.1) plaque-forming units (PFU)/ml and from 10(4.1 +/- 0.1) to 10(7.0) PFU/ml, respectively. Infection rates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of 8% (4, 14) and 25%

Anopheles sacharovi (Diptera: Culicidae): a reemerging malaria vector in the Ararat Valley of Armenia.

In 1994, the first indigenous case of malaria since the 1960s was reported in Armenia, and the number of cases quickly increased in the ensuing years. In 1998, a roll-back malaria program was developed to eliminate the recently established foci of malaria infection and to prevent the reestablishment of malaria in Armenia. As part of this program, we carried out entomological surveys to identify the potential malaria vectors in the Ararat Valley, the area where most of the indigenous malaria cases had been reported. In particular, we attempted to ascertain the presence of Anopheles sacharovi Fa

A polymerase chain reaction based method for the detection of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: culicidae).

Culex quinquefasciatus Say is the major vector of the filarial parasite Wuchereria bancrofti (Cobbold) which causes lymphatic filariasis in humans. A repetitive DNA sequence from the genome of C. quinquefasciatus has been cloned and completely sequenced. The 693 bp cloned fragment had an A+T content of 72%. Dot matrix analysis of the fragment did not reveal any direct or inverted repeats within it. Southern blot analysis using a variety of restriction enzymes appeared to indicate that the cloned fragment was interspersed within the genome with a copy number of approximately 30,000. A search of

Invertebrate carcasses as a resource for competing Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Terrestrial invertebrate carcasses are an important resource for insects developing in pitcher plants. However, little is known of the role of these carcasses in other containers, which also receive leaf fall and stemflow inputs. This experiment investigated effects of accumulated invertebrate carcasses as a resource for two competing mosquitoes, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Aedes aegypti (L.), whether either species differentially benefited from accumulated carcasses, and if such a benefit affected interspecific competition. First, we measured accumulation of invertebrate carcasses in standar

Bionomics of Culex tarsalis (Diptera: Culicidae) in relation to arbovirus transmission in southeastern California.

Population dynamics and bionomics of host-seeking Culex tarsalis Coquillett were studied in the Imperial and Coachella valleys of California during periods in 1991 and 1992 when western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) viruses were transmitted to sentinel chickens. Female abundance was greatest during the spring and fall, before and after most virus transmission occurred and was not correlated with temperature, humidity, or rainfall. Parity rates were highest during late summer when virus activity peaked and were lowest during December when females may enter a sh

Distribution of container-inhabiting Aedes larvae (Diptera: Culicidae) at a dengue focus in Thailand.

A Thai village with dengue transmission was surveyed for Aedes aegypti (L.) and Ae. albopictus (Skuse) larvae at the end of the rainy season. All containers (1,819) in 186 households were surveyed, recording the presence of larvae, container type, level of water, kind of cover, and location. The number of positive containers was proportional to the total number of containers in a household. Standard water jars (approximately 200 liters) contributed 57% and small water jars (< 100 liters) contributed 16% of the total infested containers. Each of the other 10 container types contributed < or = 1

Attractiveness of vertebrate hosts to Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) and other mosquitoes in Israel.

Host preferences of mosquitoes, mainly Culex pipiens L. and Aedes caspius (Pallas), were studied in Israel using live baits, chemical attractants, light, and suction traps. The feeding habits of Cx. pipiens were opportunistic. This species used a wide range of mammalian and avian hosts; a calf, chickens, turkeys, and sheep were the most attractive baits. A. caspius fed mainly on large mammals and was most attracted to calf and sheep baits. Although sheep were attractive, few Cx. pipiens and no Ae. caspius engorged after entering the traps. In addition to defensive behavior and the mechanical p

Whole testicular organ and seminal cryopreservation in the malarial mosquito Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae).

Anopheles gambiae (Giles) is a medically important mosquito species and a vector of the malaria Plasmodium parasite. There have been many advancements in vector control research that involves genetic manipulation of the mosquito. Malaria vector research requires rearing continuous mosquito colonies that are costly and carry risks to maintain. Therefore, we studied the feasibility of germplasm cryopreservation as a way to maintain genetic background as well as restore mosquito colonies. One part of germplasm cryopreservation is the cryopreservation of the whole germinal organ such as the testis

Molecular detection of insecticide resistance markers in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) populations from Haiti.

Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) mosquitoes are the primary vectors of several arboviruses of major public health importance, including dengue virus, Zika virus, chikungunya virus, and yellow fever virus. In Haiti, Ae. aegypti mosquitoes are highly abundant and linked to the transmission and spread of these pathogens. As the use of pesticides for control of mosquitoes increases, there is heightened selection pressure for insecticide-resistant (IR) mosquitoes, mitigating the efficacy of pesticides and leading to an increased risk of continual pathogen transmission. To this end, active surveillanc

Delayed mating in the malaria vector Anopheles funestus compared to Anopheles arabiensis (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mating is a vital behavior for mosquito reproduction, yet it remains poorly understood under captive conditions. We examined the copulation dynamics of 2 key malaria vectors, Anopheles funestus sensu stricto Giles and Anopheles arabiensis Patton, under laboratory settings in Tanzania. We conducted observations in 24-h cycles and monitored copulation events and insemination of females, initially using flashlights for nighttime visibility, followed by red lights in subsequent experiments. We observed how variations in mosquito age and artificial lighting influenced mating success for these 2 mos

Molecular and morphometric differentiation of secondary filariasis vector Coquillettidia mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Thailand.

Coquillettidia mosquitoes are important nuisance-biting pests and a vector of brugian filariasis in Thailand. However, comprehensive information about these mosquitoes remains unavailable such as molecular and morphometric differences among species. The lack of vector knowledge on Coquillettidia species could affect future disease control. This study aims to investigate differences in molecular variations based on mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and wing geometric traits of three Coquillettidia species, namely Cq. crassipes, Cq. nigrosignata, and Cq. ochracea in Thailand.

Native fungi from Amazon with potential for control of Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) is the main transmitter of pathogens that cause human diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, zika and yellow fever. Faced with this problem, this study aims to select fungi with entomopathogenic potential against Ae. aegypti and develop formulations that optimize the control action of entomopathogenic fungi in the semi-field condition. 23 fungal strains native from Amazon were inoculated in Potato-Dextrose-Agar (PDA) culture medium for 14 days and then transferred by scraping to tubes containing 0.9% NaCl solution. To obtain the larvae, eggs were collect

Ensemble species distribution modeling of Culex tarsalis (Diptera: Culicidae) in the continental United States.

West Nile virus (WNV) is the primary mosquito-borne disease in the United States and has had case reports every year since its introduction in 1999. As such, it is critical that we characterize the distribution of WNV vectors. Estimates of Culex tarsalis Coquillett species distribution, a major WNV vector, are scarce. We used ensemble distribution modeling to estimate habitat suitability for this species across the contiguous United States by consolidating presence data from four publicly available mosquito trapping data servers. The central plains region and much of the western US were estima

The ovipositor cue indole inhibits animal host attraction in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are responsible for disease transmission worldwide. They possess the ability to discriminate between different ecological resources, including nectar sources, animal hosts and oviposition sites, a feature mediated by their olfactory system. Insect repellents, such as N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (also called DEET), have been shown to activate and inhibit mosquito odorant receptors, resulting in behavioral modulation. This and other repellents currently available for personal protection against mosquitoes are topically applied to the skin and operate at a short range. In ou

Bloodmeal Host Selection of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) have recently emerged in the southwestern United States. Surveillance for arboviruses in Las Vegas, NV, detected a surge of SLEV activity in the southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus Say) during 2016. To identify candidate avian amplifiers, we assessed the identification, viral infection, and immune status of vertebrate hosts for 195 blood-engorged Cx. quinquefasciatus mosquitoes collected in August and September 2016. Bloodmeals were identified from 164 engorged abdomens, representing 19 species of birds and three species

First record of Culex (Culex) bidens (Diptera: Culicidae) in Colombia: Taxonomic and epidemiological implications.

Arbovirus transmission cycles must be studied locally since both vectors and hosts vary in different regions. Colombia has a highly diverse mosquito fauna. Culex (Culex) bidens is reported here for the first time in Colombia. Because Cx. bidens Dyar and Knab and Cx. declarator Dyar and Knab share a close taxonomic history and because it is difficult to differentiate between them, a morphological and molecular comparison was performed. The male genitalia of three specimens of Cx. bidens from Colombia were mounted on microscope slides and morphologically compared with the male genitalia of Cx. d

Environmental stochasticity and intraspecific competition influence the population dynamics of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

BACKGROUND: Members of the Culex pipiens complex (Cx. pipiens quinquefasciatus in Southern USA) play a critical role in the spillover of urban arboviruses such as West Nile virus or St. Louis encephalitis virus. Field studies have shown strong correlation between the periodicity of rainfall events and larval proliferation. However, mechanistic determinants driving this relationship are poorly understood. We hypothesize that rainfall events decrease strain from intraspecific competition through the associated reduction of immature density and the introduction of detritus. RESULTS: To address o

Ecological Distribution and CQ11 Genetic Structure of Culex pipiens Complex (Diptera: Culicidae) in Italy.

Mosquitoes in the Culex pipiens complex are considered to be involved in the transmission of a range of pathogens, including West Nile virus (WNV). Although its taxonomic status is still debated, the complex includes species, both globally distributed or with a more limited distribution, morphologically similar and characterised by different physiological and behavioural traits, which affect their ability as vectors. In many European countries, Cx. pipiens and its sibling species Culex torrentium occur in sympatry, exhibiting similar bionomic and morphological characters, but only Cx. pipiens
