Cultural background may influence the perception of psychiatric symptoms. We examined the effects of cultural biases on the identification of manic symptoms using the Young Mania Rating Scale. Two video interviews, each with an American person with mania, were shown to psychiatrists from three countries (US, UK and India). Total scores on the scale differed significantly between the US and UK (P<0.001) and between India and UK (P<0.001) rater groups. The aim of this study was to determine how long it takes blood culture to become positive using a blood culture system that can be monitored continuously in pediatric patients. Data were collected prospectively on 1,000 positive blood culture results from a tertiary pediatric university hospital from April 2000 to May 2002. This article describes the problem of homelessness from a cultural perspective. Three health and human service agencies located in Pennsylvania were investigated to ascertain whether the needs of the homeless as a culture were being met. The findings of this qualitative investigation conclude that the strategies of survival inherent in the culture of homelessness are rarely considered by social and health agencies in providing services to the homeless. Ciliary body explants from 30 human eyes were maintained in organ culture up to 14 days. The age of the donors ranged from 45 to 85 years, the post mortem time from 4 to 22 hours. A rapid culture test has been developed and evaluated for the detection of adenovirus in ocular infections. The test requires only two days' incubation of the inoculated cell monolayers on coverslips in flat bottomed tubes followed by detection of adenovirus inclusions using immunofluorescence staining method. The sensitivity of the rapid test is found to be comparable with that of the conventional tissue culture test which depends on the development of a cytopathic effect requiring 2-21 days' incubation (mean 9 X 4, SD 4 X 9).
