Mathematical analysis of the stimulus for the lateral line organ.

Behavioral studies have shown that a blind fish is capable of detecting and recognizing stationary objects in its surroundings. It is proposed that the displacement of water caused by the fish as it moves is the basis for this detection capability. Alterations in the displacement of water around the fish, caused by the obstacle, act as stimuli for the lateral line organ. The question of how these stimuli acting on the skin of the fish, image the environment and what information is thus made available to the fish is the concern of this paper. The stimuli for the lateral line organ are derived m

Latency of visually evoked saccadic eye movements. II. Temporal properties of the facilitation mechanism.

The validness of a model describing the relation between mean saccadic latency and stimulus asynchrony based on facilitation instead of suppression was tested experimentally. As a result, suppression of signals generated by the onset of a peripheral stimulus due to fixation of another target, giving rise to an increase of mean saccadic latency, does not seem very likely. The influence of the intensity of the fixation target on the latency of visually evoked saccades was studied. According to the facilitation model, the offset of the fixation target induces after an afferent delay, a transition

Two spatio-temporal filters in human vision. 2. Selective modification in amblyopia, albinism, and hemianopia.

We have used the psychophysical methods described in the first paper of this series (Holliday and Ruddock, 1983) to determine selected spatial and temporal response characteristics of the ST1 and ST2 filters for subjects suffering visual defects. Data are given for 19 amblyopes, an albino and a hemianope, and comparison data are also given for a number of subjects with normal vision. The ST1 spatial responses for both the "normal" and "amblyopic" eyes of 12 convergent strabismic amblyopes are displaced to low spatial frequencies compared to the normal curve, which implies that there is a loss

Application of linear system analysis to the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex of the alert rhesus monkey using pseudorandom binary sequence and single frequency sinusoidal stimulation.

Horizontal eye movements of the alert rhesus monkey resulting from both pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) and single frequency sinusoidal rotational stimulation were analyzed using a PDP 11/40 computer in order to generate gain, phase, and coherence estimates at discrete frequencies between 0.008 and 1.28 Hz. A computer simulation of vestibular induced eye movements was used to validate our analysis procedures and to determine the effects of digital noise. Frequency domain transfer functions derived from gain and phase estimates revealed that the responses to PRBS stimulation and to single f

Spatial spectral narrowing in the corticothalamic neural field model across consciousness states.

The neural correlates of consciousness have been characterized primarily through temporal EEG features, while the spatial dynamics of cortical activity across consciousness states remain poorly understood. Here, we analyze the spatial mode structure of the Robinson corticothalamic neural field model (CTM) across five consciousness states: healthy wakefulness, emergence from minimally conscious state (eMCS), minimally conscious state (MCS), deep sleep (N3), and unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS). We compute the noise-amplified spatial spectrum, which quantifies how the CTM filters spatiote

De novo motor learning as controller synthesis: a conceptual framework.

Most studies of motor learning focus on adaptation, which can be described as recalibration within an existing controller following changes in dynamics, kinematics, or sensory feedback. In these paradigms, control variables, coordinate representations, and feedback organization are treated as available a priori, and learning as parameter tuning within a specified controller architecture. However, de novo motor-learning tasks require learners to establish novel relationships between intention, sensory feedback, and action, rather than merely recalibrating a familiar control organization. These

Increased firing rates monotonically expand neuronal coding bandwidth.

Sensory information is often processed by populations of neurons that vary with respect to their levels of spiking activity. It appears plausible that neurons that fire more often are capable of following faster changes in the input signal than those with lower firing rates. In this study, we test this intuitive assumption by systematically investigating how the spiking activity of a neuron affects information transmission. To this end, we employ the coherence function as a spectral measure of information transmission and study the relation between the width of the coherence function, which we

The effect of data preprocessing on spike correlation analysis results.

In recent years, an increasing number of large electrophysiological data sets have become publicly available, thereby providing researchers with the opportunity to analyze spike train data without conducting their own experiments. While this is undoubtedly a positive development, it increases the need for proper documentation on how the data were collected and what preprocessing was performed on the data, since interpreting analysis results in ignorance of these pieces of information can lead to wrong conclusions. An important preprocessing step is the removal of artifacts from the recordings.

Adaptive conduction delays and phase locking in spiking Haken Lighthouse networks.

We develop a theory of phase-locked activity in delayed spiking networks using the Haken Lighthouse model as an analytically tractable event-based description of neural dynamics. For networks with fixed delays, we derive self-consistency conditions for phase-locked states and an associated linear stability theory formulated directly in terms of spike-time perturbations. The framework is illustrated for a delayed autapse, a reciprocally coupled two-cell network, and spatially structured rings with distance-dependent coupling and conduction delays, where circulant symmetry allows stability to be

Muscle-level evaluation of the minimum muscle-stress-change model in human three-joint reaching using anatomically expanded arm models.

This study examined whether muscle-level optimization can account for both arm movements and muscle recruitment in planar three-joint reaching. To extend previous movement-level analyses based on simplified musculoskeletal representations, anatomically detailed three-joint arm models comprising 19-26 muscles with nonlinear, joint-angle-dependent moment arms were used. This extension enabled direct evaluation of whether muscle-level computational models can resolve highly redundant muscle-tension distributions. The reaching task was designed with eight directions at 45 ∘ intervals in the horiz

Delay suppression control of β-oscillations: a proposal for dual-target adaptive deep brain stimulation on STN-GPe network model.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with Basal Ganglia (BG) dysfunction, where abnormal neuronal β-oscillations ([Formula: see text] Hz) have been shown to correlate with motor symptoms. Non-pharmacological therapies are based on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), delivering electric current waveform with constant frequency and amplitude to BG regions, commonly single targeting either the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN) or the Globus Palidus (GP). More recently, studies have also employed dual-target stimulation, which may synergistically increase therapeutic benefit. Addi

Coding odor modality in piriform cortex efficiently with low-dimensional subspaces: a shared covariance decoding approach.

A fundamental question in neuroscience is how sensory signals are decoded from noisy cortical activity. We address this question in the olfactory system, decoding the route by which odorants arrive into the nasal cavity: through the nostrils (orthonasal), or through the back of the throat (retronasal). We recently showed with modeling and novel experiments on anesthetized rats that orthonasal versus retronasal modality information is encoded in the olfactory bulb (OB, a pre-cortical region). However, key questions remain: is modality information transmitted from OB to anterior piriform cortex

Validating models of sensory conflict and perception for motion sickness prediction.

The human motion perception system has long been linked to motion sickness through state estimation conflict terms. However, to date, the extent to which available perception models are able to predict motion sickness, or which of the employed perceptual mechanisms are of most relevance to sickness prediction, has not been studied. In this study, the subjective vertical model, the multi-sensory observer model and the probabilistic particle filter model were all validated for their ability to predict motion perception and sickness, across a large set of motion paradigms of varying complexity fr

Leveraging deep learning to control neural oscillators.

Modulation of the firing times of neural oscillators has long been an important control objective, with applications including Parkinson's disease, Tourette's syndrome, epilepsy, and learning. One common goal for such modulation is desynchronization, wherein two or more oscillators are stimulated to transition from firing in phase with each other to firing out of phase. The optimization of such stimuli has been well studied, but this typically relies on either a reduction of the dimensionality of the system or complete knowledge of the parameters and state of the system. This limits the applic

Evolution of the Wilson-Cowan equations.

The Wilson-Cowan equations were developed to provide a simplified yet powerful description of neural network dynamics. As such, they embraced nonlinear dynamics, but in an interpretable form. Most importantly, it was the first mathematical formulation to emphasize the significance of interactions between excitatory and inhibitory neural populations, thereby incorporating both cooperation and competition. Subsequent research by many has documented the Wilson-Cowan significance in such diverse fields as visual hallucinations, memory, binocular rivalry, and epilepsy. The fact that these equations

A geometry- and muscle-based control architecture for synthesising biological movement.

A key problem for biological motor control is to establish a link between an idea of a movement and the generation of a set of muscle-stimulating signals that lead to the movement execution. The number of signals to generate is thereby larger than the body's mechanical degrees of freedom in which the idea of the movement may be easily expressed, as the movement is actually executed in this space. A mathematical formulation that provides a solving link is presented in this paper in the form of a layered, hierarchical control architecture. It is meant to synthesise a wide range of complex three-

Application of chaos in a recurrent neural network to control in ill-posed problems: a novel autonomous robot arm.

Inspired by a viewpoint that complex/chaotic dynamics would play an important role in biological systems including the brain, chaotic dynamics introduced in a recurrent neural network was applied to robot control in ill-posed situations. By computer experiments we show that a model robot arm without an advanced visual processing function can catch a target object and bring it to a set position under ill-posed situations (e.g., in the presence of unknown obstacles). The key idea in these works is adaptive switching of a system parameter (connectivity) between a chaos regime and attractor regime

Optimal phase control of biological oscillators using augmented phase reduction.

We develop a novel optimal control algorithm to change the phase of an oscillator using a minimum energy input, which also minimizes the oscillator's transversal distance to the uncontrolled periodic orbit. Our algorithm uses a two-dimensional reduction technique based on both isochrons and isostables. We develop a novel method to eliminate cardiac alternans by connecting our control algorithm with the underlying physiological problem. We also describe how the devised algorithm can be used for spike timing control which can potentially help with motor symptoms of essential and parkinsonian tre

Simultaneous spatio-temporal matching pursuit decomposition of evoked brain responses in MEG.

We present a novel approach to the spatio-temporal decomposition of evoked brain responses in magnetoencephalography (MEG) aiming at a sparse representation of the underlying brain activity in terms of spatio-temporal atoms. Our approach is characterized by three attributes which constitute significant improvements with respect to existing approaches: (1) the spatial and temporal decomposition is addressed simultaneously rather than sequentially, with the benefit that source loci and corresponding waveforms can be unequivocally allocated to each other, and, hence, allow a plausible physiologic

Internally coupled ears in living mammals.

It is generally held that the right and left middle ears of mammals are acoustically isolated from each other, such that mammals must rely on neural computation to derive sound localisation cues. There are, however, some unusual species in which the middle ear cavities intercommunicate, in which case each ear might be able to act as a pressure-difference receiver. This could improve sound localisation at lower frequencies. The platypus Ornithorhynchus is apparently unique among mammals in that its tympanic cavities are widely open to the pharynx, a morphology resembling that of some non-mammal
