New findings provide progress in the understanding of the complicated aetiopathogenesis of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), whose causalities have only been deciphered in fragments so far. An increasingly complex network of pathomechanisms is emerging, in which the frequently mentioned mast cells and urothelial changes seem to be only a fragment of the pathological changes. The latest findings regarding a possible genetic and epigenetic predisposition are based on pedigree analyses, detection of single nucleotide polymorphisms and significant changes in differentially expr

Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome is a chronic condition characterized by severe and acyclic pelvic pain lasting for a period of at least six weeks. Although this condition is not accompanied by urinary infection, the patient's daily activities are impeded. The most common symptoms are urinary frequency, dysuria, suprapubic pain, nycturia, and dyspareunia. The etiology of interstitial cystitis is unclear, and its diagnosis is infrequent because of the low number of cases. A definitive diagnosis is based on cystoscopic findings and typical histopathological evidence, such as Hun

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The opioid epidemic is a recent focus of national initiatives to reduce opioid misuse and related addiction. As interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic pain state at risk for narcotic use, we sought to assess opioid prescription use in patients with IC.
METHODS: Data were accessed from the Virginia All Payers Claims Database. We identified female patients diagnosed with IC from 2011 to 2016 using International Classification of Disease codes. A patient identifier was used to link diagnoses with outpatient prescription claims for opioids using generic product ident

The topic of interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS), and folate/one carbon metabolism has previously been unaddressed in research. This narrative review highlights a potential connection for those with mast cell-related IC and histamine-mediated pain that is explored through four conceptual sections. The first section focuses on the nature of mast cell involvement and histamine-mediated pain in some interstitial cystitis patients. The second section reviews the literature on folate status in wider allergic conditions. The third section addresses the role of fo

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a debilitating condition associated with intense pelvic pain and bladder storage symptoms. Since diagnosis is difficult, prevalence estimates vary with the methodology used. There is also a lack of proven imaging tools and biomarkers to assist in differentiation of IC/BPS from other urinary disorders (overactive bladder, vulvodynia, endometriosis, and prostatitis). Current uncertainty regarding the etiology and pathology of IC/BPS ultimately impacts its timely and successful treatment, as well as hampers future drug development. This revi

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic debilitating condition which generally has a severely negative impact on quality of life. An autoimmune genetic predisposition correlates with the theory of pathogenesis. Diagnosis requires history, diaries, physical examination, exclusion of other diseases, cystoscopy with or without hydrodistension and/or bladder biopsy. Novel biological markers are upcoming but not established. Behavioural, pharmacological oral and intravesical, interventional and surgical therapies with a wide range of reported success are available. A multi

Interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as painful bladder syndrome or bladder pain syndrome, is a chronic lower urinary tract syndrome characterized by pelvic pain, urinary urgency, and increased urinary frequency in the absence of bacterial infection or identifiable clinicopathology. IC can lead to long-term adverse effects on the patient's quality of life. Therefore, early diagnosis and better understanding of the mechanisms underlying IC are needed. Metabolomic studies of biofluids have become a powerful method for assessing disease mechanisms and biomarker discovery, which potentially addr

Four hundred and seven women with interstitial cystitis participated in a Web-based study. One hundred percent of participants had poor sleep, with a mean sleep quality score of 13.4. This indicates very poor sleep. The predictor variables (nocturia, pain, and urinary urgency) were significant predictors of sleep quality when controlling for confounding variables.

A total of 116 female patients with painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis aged 32-78 years (mean age 56 +/- 2.4 years) entered the trial. They were divided into two groups according to treatment. Group 1 (n = 54) received 10-day combined conservative treatment consisting of antimicrobial drugs (if urinary infection was diagnosed), angioprotectors, mast cell activity stabilizers and bladder instillation with combined solution. Group 2 included 62 patients whose treatment included complex anti-inflammatory therapy in combination with HBO sessions (7-10 sessions in barochamber OKA-MT, 2.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of hydrodistention (HD) and bladder training for interstitial cystitis (IC). From 1997 to 2006, 361 consecutive IC patients were treated by HD, followed by bladder training. Each patient was followed up using a diary for 8 weeks after HD weekly and monthly thereafter. The efficacy of the treatment was evaluated using the average of the voided volumes and the voiding frequency. The mean +/- standard deviation of the pre-HD daytime voided volumes and voiding frequency were 110.0 +/- 47.0 ml and 14.7 +/- 11.0, respectively. Furthermore, the nocturnal valu

This study evaluated the prevalence of depression, sexual abuse, and physical abuse among women diagnosed with interstitial cystitis (IC). One hundred forty-one subjects completed the validated Beck's Depression Inventory II Questionnaire (BDI-II) and the validated Drossman Abuse Questionnaire. Ninety-seven (69%) subjects scored 14 or higher on the BDI-II, corresponding to depression. When compared to the US prevalence of 9%, this was significantly higher. Fifty-one subjects (36%) reported sexual abuse which is higher than the US average. The prevalence of childhood sexual abuse in the sample

We utilized physician-coded diagnoses and chart reviews to estimate the incidence of interstitial cystitis (IC) in women. A computer search of the Kaiser Permanente database was performed to identify newly coded diagnoses of IC (ICD-9 code 595.1) between May 2002 and May 2005. Chart reviews were performed and patient demographics, diagnosing physicians, and symptom characteristics were recorded. The IC incidence rate was 15 per 100,000 women per year. The mean age of the patients was 51 years (range 31-81 years). The most common presenting symptoms were frequency (70%), dysuria (52%), urgency

OBJECTIVES: To show the value of placing bilateral sacral nerve stimulators in patients diagnosed with interstitial cystitis with the symptoms of frequency, urgency, and pain.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of patients who had had bilateral S3 stimulators placed during a 6-month period. At consultation immediately before undergoing the procedure and on subsequent postoperative visits, these patients completed the Urinary Distress Inventory short form and voiding diaries. Patients were excluded if sacroneuromodulation had been attempted to be placed previously, if patients

In this article, we report a study that assessed the prevalence of interstitial cystitis (IC) in a primary care office using symptom-based and improved diagnosis-based assessment modalities. Over the course of 1 year, all patients > or = 18 years of age who presented for a primary care office visit were administered the Pelvic Pain and Urgency/Frequency (PUF) questionnaire. Patients with potential IC as indicated by PUF score were selected for further interview and, when appropriate, a Potassium Sensitivity Test (PST) or Anesthetic Bladder Challenge (ABC). Those given the PST were queried afte

Our approaches to the diagnosis of interstitial cystitis (IC) are evolving as a result of recent advances in our knowledge of the disease. With increasing awareness of IC prevalence and presentation, clinicians are identifying cases of IC earlier in the disease process. A diagnosis of IC can now be established without applying each step of the traditional diagnostic paradigm, which was designed to identify "classic" cases of IC. In this article, we present an updated paradigm for the diagnosis of IC based on recent clinical data and consensus discussions conducted at the International Consulta

PURPOSE: To examine clinical features of the patients of interstitial cystitis (IC) undergoing hydrodistension at our institution.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 52 IC patients who underwent hydrodistension between July 2002 and December 2004. Transurethral coagulation (TUC) of Hunner's ulcer (HU) was subsequently performed for patients with HU (ulcer type). Descriptive statistics of the patients' characteristics and outcomes were provided and compared between ulcer type and nonulcer type IC patients.
RESULTS: Of the 52 patients, 44 (85%) were female and 8 were male. Mea

The purpose of this study was to screen a general patient population for interstitial cystitis (IC) and to determine the outcome of combination therapy (pentosan polysulfate sodium [PPS] and hydroxyzine) in newly diagnosed patients. Screening for IC symptoms was performed on 3883 patients (>or=18 yr of age). After further evaluation, a diagnosis of IC was made in 160 patients. These patients were subsequently treated with PPS 200 mg twice a day (off-label usage) and hydroxyzine hydrochloride 25 mg nightly for 1 to 12 mo. Clinically meaningful (>or=50%) improvement in IC symptoms, as measured b
