Utilising alternative cystoscopic schedules to minimise cost and patient burden after trimodality therapy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: To assess urinary symptoms and urine cytology as screening tools for cystoscopic detection of local recurrence after bladder-preserving trimodality treatment (TMT). METHODS: Patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer receiving definitive TMT follow-up three monthly for 2 years, six monthly for the next 3 years and then yearly, with a clinical review, urine cytology and cystoscopy at each visit (triple assessment, TA). Grade 2+ cystitis/haematuria absent/present was scored 0/1, and urine cytology reported negative/suspicious or positive was scored 0/1, respectively. The performan

Cyclooxygenase-2 expression on urothelial and inflammatory cells of cystoscopic biopsies and urine cytology as a possible predictive marker for bladder carcinoma.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is a key inducible enzyme involved in the production of prostaglandins. It contributes to human carcinogenesis by various mechanisms. The aim of the current study was to elucidate the possible involvement of COX-2 in human bladder carcinoma by examining its expression on both urothelial and inflammatory cells in tissue biopsies and urine cytology samples of different urinary bladder lesions. A total of 65 patients were included in the study and were selected from cases admitted to Urology Department, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI), Giza, Egypt. They represen

Comparison of direct radionuclide cystography with micturating cystourethrography for the diagnosis of vesicoureteric reflux, and its correlation with cystoscopic appearances of the ureteric orifices.

Forty-eight patients with strong clinical suspicion of vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) as the cause for their renal disease; were subjected to direct radionuclide cystography and roentgenographic micturating cystourethrography for its detection. Forty-four of them underwent cystoscopy under local anaesthesia to document the position and appearance of the ureteric orifices. Of the 92 kidney-ureter 'units' available for study, 20 had reflux positive on micturating cystourethrography and 22 had direct radionuclide cystography positivity. Two of the three units picked up on direct radionuclide cystogr

The use of a cystoscopically placed cobra catheter for directed irrigation of lower pole caliceal stones during extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

As the general experience with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for renal calculi broadens, it is increasingly evident that the clearance of stone fragments in lower pole calices needs to be improved. The stone-free rate after treatment for lower caliceal stones is consistently less than that for other upper tract locations. Use of a cystoscopically placed cobra catheter for directed irrigation during ESWL resulted in an increase of our lower caliceal stone-free rate at 1 and 3 months of followup to 71% (15 of 21) compared to 33% (8 of 24) of randomly selected controls at 1 month a
