A potent toxin with phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and hemolytic activity in vitro was purified from the Russell's viper venom of eastern India (RVV-EI). The purified protein (RVV-PFIIc') of 15.3 kDa molecular weight, and a lethal toxicity dose (LD50i.p.) of 0.1 mg/kg body weight, was the most toxic PLA2 so far reported from the Indian subcontinent. The material also possessed anticoagulant activity as it enhanced the prothrombin induced plasma clotting time in vitro. The PLA2 toxin (RVV-PFIIc') was shown to be different from other PLA2s of RVV in respect to one or more of these parameters e.g. molec

Electroencephalograms (EEGs) were obtained for 26 patients with snake bite to observe the cerebral impact of snake venom. All snakes were identified; 19 (73%) were Russell's vipers, one (4%) was a common cobra, five (19%) were hump-nosed vipers, and one (4%) was a dog-faced fresh water snake. The EEG was abnormal in 25 patients (96%) and these results included all the snake species identified. The EEG abnormalities observed were reduced alpha activity, increased theta/beta activity or sharp waves (grade 1), sharp waves or spikes and slow waves (grade 2), or diffuse delta activity (grade 3). Envenomation by Russell's viper is a major cause of hemotoxic snakebite in South Asia, associated with venom-induced consumptive coagulopathy (VICC), leading to end-organ damage, including the kidneys, adrenal glands, and pituitary gland. Hypopituitarism is a rare but increasingly recognized delayed complication, reported primarily from South India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, but not previously reported from Bangladesh. We conducted a prospective longitudinal cohort study at a tertiary referral hospital in Rajshahi, Bangladesh (2019-2025). A total of 203 male patients with Russell's viper envenom

INTRODUCTION: Snakebite envenomation poses a significant health risk, particularly in low-resource settings where access to proper treatment is limited.
CASE PRESENTATION: This study reports two cases of Russell's viper bites in rural Bangladesh, involving 48 and 35-year-old Bangladesh males, respectively, and highlights the difficulties in providing adequate medical care and in treating any complications that may arise. Both cases involved delayed access to healthcare, initial visit to traditional healers, and the development of severe complications such as coagulopathy, renal failure. After

BACKGROUND: Coagulopathy is an important and common systemic clinical syndrome caused by snake envenoming. The major clinical effect of Russell's viper (RV) envenoming is haematotoxicity. The 20-min whole blood clotting test (WBCT20) is the standard test for identification of envenoming in resource-limited settings. However, its reliability as a diagnostic test has been questioned. Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) assays different phases of clot formation from initiation to fibrinolysis. Our objective was to compare parameters of ROTEM with WBCT20 and the international normalized ratio (I

MicroRNAs in biofluids are potential biomarkers for detecting kidney and other organ injuries. We profiled microRNAs in urine samples from patients with Russell's viper envenoming or acute self-poisoning following paraquat, glyphosate, or oxalic acid [with and without acute kidney injury (AKI)] and on healthy controls. Discovery analysis profiled for 754 microRNAs using TaqMan OpenArray qPCR with three patients per group (12 samples in each toxic agent). From these, 53 microRNAs were selected and validated in a larger cohort of patients (Russell's viper envenoming = 53, paraquat = 51, glyphosa

Russell's viper bites are known to cause a range of haemotoxic, neurotoxic, myotoxic, cytotoxic and nephrotoxic complications. However, the impact of Russell's viper bites as well as bites from other venomous snakes on sialolithiasis has not been previously reported. Here, we present an interesting case where a Russell's viper bite induced the rapid development of a calculus in submandibular gland in a 10-year-old boy. Upon admission, the victim did not show any symptoms of swelling and/or pain around his oral cavity. He received antivenom treatment to normalise his coagulation parameters, how

PURPOSE: Hypopituitarism (HP) is an uncommon consequence of Russell's viper envenomation (RVE). Delayed hypopituitarism (DHP) presents months to years after recovering from snake bites (SB). The clinical presentation, manifestations, and outcomes of DHP following RVE have not been systematically studied. Here, we present a case series of HP following RVE with delayed diagnosis and conduct a literature review.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data of eight DHP cases and literature to outline the presentation, manifestations, hormonal profiles, and radiological features of DHP following RVE

India has recorded the maximum snakebite deaths in the world. Intravenous administration of polyvalent antivenom (PAV) raised against the 'Big Four' venomous snakes of India (Naja naja, Daboia russelli, Echis carinatus, and Bungarus caeraleus) is the only choice of treatment. The WHO has recommended the evaluation of quality and safety of commercial antivenom by in vitro laboratory tests prior to their pre-clinical evaluation in animal model and therapeutic use. Therefore, in this study an attempt has been made to evaluate the quality of commercial polyvalent antivenom produced in India by sim

Human Group IIA phospholipase A2 (hGIIA) promotes inflammation in immune-mediated pathologies by regulating the arachidonic acid pathway through both catalysis-dependent and -independent mechanisms. The hGIIA crystal structure, both alone and inhibitor-bound, together with structures of closely related snake-venom-derived secreted phospholipase enzymes has been well described. However, differentiation of biological and nonbiological contacts and the relevance of structures determined from snake venom enzymes to human enzymes are not clear. We employed molecular dynamics (MD) and docking approa

Snake venom toxins are now regularly used in the coagulation laboratory for assaying haemostatic parameters and as coagulation reagents. Snake venom thrombin-like enzymes (SVTLE) are used for fibrinogen and fibrinogen breakdown product assay as well as detecting dysfibrinogenaemias. Significantly, because SVTLE are not inhibited by heparin, they can be used for defibrinating samples that contain the anticoagulant before assay of haemostatic variables. Prothrombin activators are found in many snake venoms and are used in prothrombin assays, for studying dysprothrombinaemias and preparing meizot

Snakebite envenomation is an important public health problem in tropical countries. We report a case of bilateral adrenal hemorrhage in a 28-y-old man with Russell's viper bite that occurred in the Sathyamangalam forest range in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In this case, a combination of early bite recognition, hospital-based supportive care, corticosteroid therapy, and timely administration of polyvalent antivenom resulted in a favorable clinical outcome.

Hump-nosed viper (Hypnale hypnale; HNV) is one of the six major snake species in Sri Lanka that cause envenomation. Nephrotoxicity, coagulopathy, and neurotoxicity are wellrecognized features of its envenomation. Type 4 renal tubular acidosis (RTA4) has only once been described previously in this condition, and we report two further cases. Two patients aged 53 and 51 presented following HNV bites with acute kidney injury and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. Both underwent multiple cycles of hemodialysis until the polyuric phase was reached. Despite polyuria, both patients developed resistant

INTRODUCTION: Russell's viper is a commonly encountered venomous snake in India. Morbidity and mortality following envenomation and the treatment thereof are frequent. We report a rarely seen complication after a treated Russell's viper bite.
CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old male farmer received 30 vials polyvalent anti-snake venom after a viper bite to his right leg. Improvement in initial hematemesis and circulatory shock was followed by acute renal failure managed with regular hemodialysis. He displayed no abnormalities on neurological examination at admission. Fourth day onwards his neurologic

The study aims to examine the Viper russelli russelli venom neutralization potential of the ethanol leaf extract (250, 500 and 750 mg/kg) of Acalypha indica (Euphorbiaceae). Administration of the ethanol leaf extract at i.p. dose levels of 500 and 750 mg/kg significantly inhibited, in a dose dependent manner, the Viper russelli venom-induced lethality, haemorrhage, necrotizing and mast cell degranulation in rats and the cardiotoxic and neurotoxic effects in isolated frog tissue. Administration of the extract also significantly inhibited venom-induced lipid peroxidation in RBC, decreased GSH an

Snakebite envenomation, especially from hemotoxic species such as Daboia russelii and Echis carinatus, remains a significant public health challenge in the northern Indian states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. Despite the availability of polyvalent anti-snake venom (ASV), inconsistent dosing strategies, delayed administration, and disparities in healthcare contribute to high morbidity and mortality rates. This review examines optimal ASV dosing protocols, clinical outcomes, and host-specific factors that influence the therapeutic efficacy in hemotoxic env

Snakebite remains the most neglected tropical disease globally, with India experiencing the highest rates of mortality and morbidity. While most envenomation cases in India are attributed to the 'big four' snakes, research has predominantly focused on Russell's viper (Daboia russelii), spectacled cobra (Naja naja), and common krait (Bungarus caeruleus), leading to a considerable gap in our understanding of saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus carinatus) venoms. For instance, the venom gland transcriptome and inter- and intra-population venom variation in E. c. carinatus have largely remained unin

A venomous snake's oral cavity may harbor pathogenic microorganisms that cause secondary infection at the wound site after being bitten. We collected oral samples from 37 individuals belonging to seven species of wild venomous snakes in Taiwan, including Naja atra (Na), Bungarus multicinctus (Bm), Protobothrops mucrosquamatus (Pm), Trimeresurus stejnegeri (Ts), Daboia siamensis (Ds), Deinagkistrodon acutus (Da), and alpine Trimeresurus gracilis (Tg). Bacterial species were identified using full-length 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing analysis, and this is the first study using this technique to in

Millions of people suffer from snake bite envenomation, and its management is a challenge, even today. Medicinal plants have attracted the researcher's attention for their outstanding advantages in treating many diseases, including snake venom poisoning. Clitoria ternatea L, is a plant popularly known for its various pharmacological effects especially, anti-snake venom property. However, the molecular mechanism behind this is poorly understood. It is reported that snake venom PLA2 is an extensively studied toxic factor. This study is meant to screen the compound's capability to act as inhibito

Sterile inflammation (SI) is an essential process in response to snakebite and injury. The venom induced pathophysiological response to sterile inflammation results into many harmful and deleterious effects that ultimately leads to death. The available treatment for snakebite is antiserum which does not provide enough protection against venom-induced pathophysiological changes like haemorrhage, necrosis, nephrotoxicity and often develop hypersensitive reactions. In order to overcome these hindrances, scientists around the globe are searching for an alternative therapy to provide better treatme
