Ultrastructure of the wall of the Dandy-Walker cyst. A case report.

The ultrastructure of the wall of the Dandy-Walker cyst has been described rarely. A boy aged 2 years was confirmed clinically, neuroradiologically, and operatively as having a Dandy-Walker cyst in the posterior fossa. The cyst wall obtained during surgery consisted of an outer arachnoid cell layer, intermediate interwoven neurological strands, and an inner layer of cells which lacked the characteristic appearance of ependyma. An unusual finding was a small, buried island of ependymal cells in the intermediate layer of the neuroglial tissue. Ultrastructural study of the cyst wall provides a be

Sibs with Ritscher-Schinzel (3C) syndrome and anal malformations.

Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome (cranio-cerebello-cardiac syndrome, 3C syndrome) is a recently delineated disorder with Dandy-Walker malformation, congenital heart defects, and characteristic face. Various other defects, including eye and kidney malformations, have been described in the few patients reported. Here we describe 3 sibs born to consanguineous Pakistani parents with 3C syndrome. All 3 children had atrial septal defects II and ventricular septal defects and died within 3 months. Two of them had a Dandy-Walker malformation, whereas 1 had only slightly dilated ventricles. One sib had anal

Dandy-Walker malformation masking the molar tooth sign: an illustrative case with magnetic resonance imaging follow-up.

Joubert syndrome is a disorder characterized by ataxia, developmental delay, oculomotor anomalies, and breathing irregularities, with cerebellar vermian and midbrain dysgenesis. The molar tooth sign, reflecting the midbrain dysgenesis of Joubert syndrome, is the neuroradiological hallmark and is an essential sign in the identification of this condition. Variable vermian agenesis, an expanded fourth ventricle, and a large posterior cranial fossa with a normal brainstem are typical of Dandy-Walker malformation. The authors report a case in which a Dandy-Walker malformation coexisted with Joubert

Agenesis of the vermis cerebelli and malformations of the posterior fossa in childhood and adolescence.

Three cases of cerebellar vermis agenesis are reported and the relevant literature (19 other cases) is reviewed. Other posterior fossa malformations, such as a mega-cisterna magna, arachnoid cyst and Dandy-Walker syndrome, are discussed both from the pathological and clinical view point. We put forward a hypothesis that agenesis of the cerebellar vermis and Dandy-Walker syndrome could be regarded as two different stages of the same malformation.

Goldston syndrome reconsidered.

We describe two siblings with the combination of central nervous system malformations, renal dysplasia and hepatic ductal plate malformation. Based on the occurrence of a cerebellar Dandy-Walker malformation (variant), the diagnosis of Goldston syndrome was proposed in the first case. The second sibling however, showed a typical Meckel syndrome with occipital encephalocele. Both cases had a cranium bifidum with two defects in the squamous part of the occipital bone. This observation confirms that Goldston syndrome is not a distinct entity but merely a variant of Meckel syndrome, and that a cer

Dandy-Walker spectrum with bilateral optic atrophy and seizure disorder: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a rare congenital posterior fossa malformation, affecting 1 in 25 000-30 000 live births. Prenatal diagnosis is possible via ultrasound and MRI. This case highlights a rare Dandy-Walker variant with bilateral optic atrophy and status epilepticus, emphasizing the need for awareness of progressive neurological and visual impairment in Dandy-Walker spectrum disorders. The case adds to the evolving knowledge on the diverse phenotypic presentations of the Dandy-Walker variant, particularly in resource-limited settings where diagnostic and

An incidental finding of Dandy-Walker malformation.

Dandy-Walker malformation is a rare congenital anomaly affecting the posterior fossa, occurring in one in 30,000 births. Its hallmark characteristics include hypoplasia of the vermis, dilation of the fourth ventricle, and an enlarged posterior fossa. This case study describes a finding of Dandy-Walker malformation during a workup of encephalopathy in a patient on veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Ultrasound-guided puncture of a Dandy-Walker cyst via the lateral and III ventricles.

Since the Dandy-Walker syndrome was first described by Dandy and Blackfan, Taggart and Walker, the many variants of posterior fossa anomalies, the appropriate management of these malformations and the clinical outcome have been the subjects of controversy. Surgery of the posterior fossa with membrane excision was initially the preferred method of treatment. Unfortunately, there was a high rate of complications, and many of the patients treated in this way still needed a shunting system. Ventricular-peritoneal and/or cysto-peritoneal shunting is commonly used to treat symptomatic posterior foss

Psychiatric manifestations associated with mega cisterna magna.

The Dandy-Walker variant is a milder form of the Dandy-Walker complex and is characterized by normal-sized posterior fossa, mild vermian hypoplasia, and a cystic lesion that communicates with the fourth ventricle. This syndrome has been described in association with schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, manic episode, psychosis (delusional type), and recurrent catatonia. The authors present two cases of mega cisterna magna associated with mania and catatonic schizophrenia.

Biallelic mutations in EXOC3L2 cause a novel syndrome that affects the brain, kidney and blood.

BACKGROUND: Dandy-Walker malformation features agenesis/hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle and enlargement of posterior fossa. Although Dandy-Walker malformation is relatively common and several genes were linked to the syndrome, the genetic cause in the majority of cases is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To identify the mutated gene responsible for Dandy-Walker malformation, kidney disease and bone marrow failure in four patients from two unrelated families. METHODS: Medical assessment, sonographic, MRI and pathological studies were used to define phenotype.

Ocular manifestations in a patient with Dandy-Walker malformation: A case report.

We present a unique case of a ten-month-old boy with a protruding left globe and vitreous haemorrhaging, and later being diagnosed as a case of a dandy-walker syndrome (DWS) with buphthalmos and vitreous haemorrhage. Treatment is depending on the symptoms reported, thus close monitoring and a multidisciplinary approach are essential. We would like to recommend that even if there are no cardinal symptoms of DWS, paediatric patients with ocular signs should have Dandy walker Malformation (DWM) considered as a differential diagnosis.

[Genetic analysis of two cases with Dandy-Walker deformed fetus].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic etiology of two fetuses with Dandy-Walker malformation using single nucleotide polymorphism microarray (SNP-array). METHODS: The fetuses and their parents were subjected to G banding karyotype analysis. The fetuses were also subjected to SNP-array analysis. RESULTS: The parents of both fetuses showed a normal karyotype. One fetus has a 46,X,?i(X)(q10), while for another conventional cell culture has failed. SNP-array showed that one fetus carried a 6p25.3p25.2 microdeletion, and another carried a Xp22.33p22.2 deletion and a Yq11.221q11 duplication. The abnor

Dandy-Walker cyst upward herniation: the role of magnetic resonance imaging and double shunts.

Upward transtentorial herniation of a Dandy-Walker cyst is a potentially fatal complication, particularly after solitary shunting of the lateral ventricle for associated hydrocephalus. Two patients with upward transtentorial herniation of their Dandy-Walker cysts are presented to illustrate the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with the demonstration of unique 'keyhole' and 'snail' signs on the axial and sagittal MR images, respectively. In both patients, double and simultaneous shunting en-Y of a lateral ventricle and the posterior fossa cyst resulted in the resolution of th

Dandy-Walker malformation associated with heterozygous ZIC1 and ZIC4 deletion: Report of a new patient.

We report on a female patient with Dandy-Walker malformation possibly caused by heterozygous loss of ZIC1 and ZIC4. The patient presented with mental retardation, epilepsy, and multiple congenital malformations including spina bifida, mild dysmorphic facial features including, thick eyebrows, broad nose, full lips, macroglossia, and hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis with enlargement of the fourth ventricle on brain magnetic resonance imaging, which is consistent with Dandy-Walker malformation. A chromosome analysis showed interstitial deletion of chromosome 3q23-q25.1. Fluorescence in situ h

Cerebellar vermian defects: antenatal sonographic appearance and clinical significance.

A partial or complete defect of the cerebellar vermis may occur sporadically or as a component of the Dandy-Walker syndrome, the Dandy-Walker variant, Down's syndrome, or Joubert-syndrome. We identified a defect of the cerebellar vermis in nine fetuses on routine antenatal sonographic studies. In five of the nine fetuses other abnormalities, including central nervous system and non-central nervous system lesions were identified. Three of these five fetuses died and two infants have remained well on follow-up. Four of nine fetuses (or infants) had no other abnormalities and have remained well o

Posterior fossa malformations.

Understanding embryologic development of the cerebellum and the 4th ventricle is essential for understanding posterior fossa malformations. Posterior fossa malformations can be conveniently classified into those that have a large posterior fossa and those with normal or small posterior fossa. Disorders associated with a large posterior fossa include classic Dandy-Walker malformation, Blake's pouch cyst, mega cisterna magna, and posterior fossa arachnoid cyst. Disorders associated with normal or small posterior fossa include Dandy-Walker variant, Joubert syndrome, tecto-cerebellar dysraphia, rh

Marden-Walker syndrome: case report, literature review and nosologic discussion.

The Marden-Walker syndrome is characterized by psychomotor retardation, a mask-like face with blepharophimosis, micrognathia and a high-arched or cleft palate, low-set ears, kyphoscoliosis and joint contractures. We report on a male patient with the clinical features of the syndrome. In addition, he had a Dandy-Walker malformation with hydrocephalus and vertebral abnormalities. During pregnancy, there were feeble fetal movements and polyhydramnios. We propose that Marden-Walker syndrome is one of the etiologic possibilities in children with the heterogeneous fetal a(hypo)kinesia deformation se
