Estimates of underwater and aerial visual acuity in the European beaver Castor fiber L. based on morphological data.

The eye optics and topographic distribution of ganglion cells were studied using whole mount preparations from European beaver Castor fiber L. The beaver eye optics provides emmetropia in air and hypermetropia in water. The optometrical measurements predict retinal resolution of the beaver eye around 17' in air and 9' in water. In air, retinal resolution corresponds to the real visual acuity, whereas in water, visual acuity is below the retinal resolution because of the non-precise focusing.

3D Visual Data-Driven Spatiotemporal Deformations for Non-Rigid Object Grasping Using Robot Hands.

Sensing techniques are important for solving problems of uncertainty inherent to intelligent grasping tasks. The main goal here is to present a visual sensing system based on range imaging technology for robot manipulation of non-rigid objects. Our proposal provides a suitable visual perception system of complex grasping tasks to support a robot controller when other sensor systems, such as tactile and force, are not able to obtain useful data relevant to the grasping manipulation task. In particular, a new visual approach based on RGBD data was implemented to help a robot controller carry out

Trained artificial neural network for glaucoma diagnosis using visual field data: a comparison with conventional algorithms.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and confirm the performance of an artificial neural network (ANN) trained to recognize glaucomatous visual field defects, and compare its diagnostic accuracy with that of other algorithms proposed for the detection of visual field loss. METHODS: SITA Standard 30-2 visual fields, from 100 glaucoma patients and 116 healthy participants, formed the data set. Our ANN was a previously described fully trained network using scored pattern deviation probability maps as input data. Its diagnostic accuracy was compared to that of the Glaucoma Hemifield Test, the Pattern Standard De

Extraction of steady state visually evoked potential signal and estimation of distribution map from EEG data.

We propose a signal extraction method from multi-channel EEG signals and apply to extract Steady State Visually Evoked Potential (SSVEP) signal. SSVEP is a response to visual stimuli presented in the form of flushing patterns. By using several flushing patterns with different frequency, brain machine (computer) interface (BMI/BCI) can be realized. Therefore it is important to extract SSVEP signals from multi-channel EEG signals. At first, we estimate the power of the objective signal in each electrode. Estimation of the power is helpful in not only extraction of the signal but also drawing a d

Perspectives on lung visualization: Three-dimensional anatomical modeling of computed and micro-computed tomographic data in comparative evolutionary morphology and medicine with applications for COVID-19.

The vertebrate respiratory system is challenging to study. The complex relationship between the lungs and adjacent tissues, the vast structural diversity of the respiratory system both within individuals and between taxa, its mobility (or immobility) and distensibility, and the difficulty of quantifying and visualizing functionally important internal negative spaces have all impeded descriptive, functional, and comparative research. As a result, there is a relative paucity of three-dimensional anatomical information on this organ system in all vertebrate groups (including humans) relative to o

OW-CLIP: Data-Efficient Visual Supervision for Open-World Object Detection via Human-AI Collaboration.

Open-world object detection (OWOD) extends traditional object detection to identifying both known and unknown object, necessitating continuous model adaptation as new annotations emerge. Current approaches face significant limitations: 1) data-hungry training due to reliance on a large number of crowdsourced annotations, 2) susceptibility to "partial feature overfitting," and 3) limited flexibility due to required model architecture modifications. To tackle these issues, we present OW-CLIP, a visual analytics system that provides curated data and enables data-efficient OWOD model incremental t

A quantum resistant chaos driven image encryption framework for secure visual data transmission in intelligent transportation systems.

The use of image-sensing and real-time processing in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) has introduced a sudden surge in transmitting and gathering high-resolution visual data from vehicle cameras, road infrastructures, and user devices. Such image data are, however, exceedingly susceptible to interception, tampering, and privacy breaches with regard to imminent quantum computing attacks that can break classical encryption algorithms. With such constraints in view, the paper presents a new Hybrid Quantum-Classical Image Encryption Framework that integrates chaos-based bit-level image enc

Quantitative and Visual Benefits of Data-Driven Motion Correction on Oncologic PET/CT: A Prospective Cross-sectional Study.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Conventional positron emission tomography (PET) respiratory gating utilizes a fraction of acquired PET counts (i.e., optimal gate [OG]), whereas elastic motion correction with deblurring (EMCD) utilizes all PET counts to reconstruct motion-corrected images without increasing image noise. Our aim was to assess the quantitative and visual impacts of EMCD-based motion correction on FDG-PET and DOTATATE-PET images relative to OG and ungated (UG) images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, single-center study enrolled adults undergoing FDG or DOTATATE oncologic PET/CT

Detecting time-specific differences between temporal nonlinear curves: Analyzing data from the visual world paradigm.

In multiple fields of study, time series measured at high frequencies are used to estimate population curves that describe the temporal evolution of some characteristic of interest. These curves are typically nonlinear, and the deviations of each series from the corresponding curve are highly autocorrelated. In this scenario, we propose a procedure to compare the response curves for different groups at specific points in time. The method involves fitting the curves, performing potentially hundreds of serially correlated tests, and appropriately adjusting the overall alpha level of the tests. O

Characterization of the human primary visual cortex and cerebellum proteomes using shotgun mass spectrometry-data-independent analyses.

We present the first characterization of the human occipital lobe (primary visual cortex) and cerebellum proteomes. Proteins were identified using a combination of gel electrophoresis and data-independent nanoflow liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (nLC-MS(E) ). The resulting data sets comprised 391 and 330 unique proteins in occipital lobe and cerebellum, respectively, present in at least 75% of the analyzed samples with 297 proteins found in common. These proteins have been associated previously with conditions, such as neurological disorder, progressive motor neuropathy, Parkinson's di

Assessing health-regulating ecosystem services in rural landscapes: An integrated approach using physiological and visual semantic data.

To support health-oriented rural revitalization, effective management of rural green infrastructure requires robust tools for quantifying restorative ecosystem services and informing evidence-based design. This study develops and tests a multimodal evaluation framework that integrates subjective mood assessment (POMS), physiological stress indicators (GSR and HRV), and deep-learning-based visual semantic analysis (SegFormer) to examine how landscape structure relates to health-relevant restorative responses. The framework was applied in four rural landscape typologies-flat-farmland, hilly-fore

Visual outcomes after anterior temporal lobectomy and transsylvian selective amygdalohippocampectomy: A quantitative comparison of clinical and diffusion data.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) and transsylvian selective amygdalohippocampectomy (tsSAHE) are effective treatment strategies for intractable temporal lobe epilepsy but may cause visual field deficits (VFDs) by damaging the optic radiation (OpR). Due to the OpR's considerable variability and because it is indistinguishable from surrounding tissue without further technical guidance, it is highly vulnerable to iatrogenic injury. This imaging study uses a multimodal approach to assess visual outcomes after epilepsy surgery. METHODS: We studied 62 patients who underwent ATL (n = 32)
