Anterior cingulate activity modulates nonlinear decision weight function of uncertain prospects.

Prospect theory developed by Kahneman and Tversky has been among the most influential psychological models and explains many nonnormative decision-making phenomena, e.g. why people play the lottery or bet on long-shots. A Certainty Equivalent procedure was used during functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify the neural substrates that are important for nonlinear transformation of probabilities to decision weights. Differential activation in the anterior cingulate cortex during high versus low probability prospects correlated (r = 0.84, P < 0.01) with the degree of the nonlinearity of

MADM-based smart parking guidance algorithm.

In smart parking environments, how to choose suitable parking facilities with various attributes to satisfy certain criteria is an important decision issue. Based on the multiple attributes decision making (MADM) theory, this study proposed a smart parking guidance algorithm by considering three representative decision factors (i.e., walk duration, parking fee, and the number of vacant parking spaces) and various preferences of drivers. In this paper, the expected number of vacant parking spaces is regarded as an important attribute to reflect the difficulty degree of finding available parking

Third-Party Cooperation: How Reducing Material Involvement Enhances Contributions to the Public Good.

Decisions to cooperate are often delegated to a third party. We examined whether cooperation differs when decisions are made for a third party compared with ourselves and specified which motives are important for third-party cooperation. Participants played multiple rounds of a public goods game (PGG). In Study 1, we varied personal involvement from high to low; participants played for themselves (Self), for themselves and a third party (Shared), and solely for a third party (Third Party). Participants contributed most when personal involvement was lowest (i.e., Third Party) and least when per

Referral to rehabilitation following traumatic brain injury: practitioners and the process of decision-making.

The study aimed to examine the factors influencing referral to rehabilitation following traumatic brain injury (TBI) by using social problems theory as a conceptual model to focus on practitioners and the process of decision-making in two Australian hospitals. The research design involved semi-structured interviews with 18 practitioners and observations of 10 team meetings, and was part of a larger study on factors influencing referral to rehabilitation in the same settings. Analysis revealed that referral decisions were influenced primarily by practitioners' selection and their interpretation

Three-year-old children understand the false beliefs of their partner in collaborative decision making.

Classic false-belief tasks may be confusing because children converse with someone who knows that a situation has changed about a third person who does not know this. Two studies used a collaborative false-belief task in which US- and UK-based 3-year-olds (N = 84, 48 girls, data collection: 2023) and a partner had to jointly decide in which box a toy was hidden. Children informed their partner and provided reasons about the location of the toy more when their partner had a false belief than when they had a true belief. We discuss the hypothesis that collaborative decision making pushes childre

Ethical issues in Iranian pediatrics: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Children are recognized as one of the most vulnerable groups in society, and their integration into healthcare systems involves not only medical care but also significant emotional investment and time to achieve optimal outcomes. This process is complicated by various ethical challenges that healthcare teams face daily, influenced by social, cultural, economic, and religious factors. This study aims to identify the ethical challenges and the factors influencing their emergence in pediatric care in Iran. While developed countries have established ethical guidelines to address these

Hierarchical Governance in Public Crisis: A Differential Game Analysis of Epidemic Containment, Economic Stability, and Transition Timing.

In the complex scenario of a major epidemic, apart from the superior government's efforts to promote policy implementation through political incentives and fiscal transfer payments, local governments must strive to balance the inherent tension between public health containment policies and economic stability objectives. In addition, they must carefully select the appropriate transition timing from the emergency response phase to the routine management phase. Considering the hierarchical governance structure and the strategic dynamic decision-making processes involved, this paper examines the e

Instrumental harm and impartial beneficence distinctively frame cognitive representations of moral decision problems.

Utilitarian ethical theories argue that the morality of actions depends on their consequences for impartially maximizing overall welfare. Recent research suggests that individual differences in utilitarian tendencies fall along two dimensions: a permissive attitude toward harming others for greater good (instrumental harm [IH]) and an impartial concern for others' welfare (impartial beneficence [IB]). We hypothesize that these dimensions operate as intuitive theories in the moral domain, framing distinctive patterns of moral judgments and behavior. Using intersubject representational similarit

Androgenic morality? Associations of sex, oral contraceptive use and basal testosterone levels with moral decision making.

Aside from cultural, psychological, or situational factors, differences in moral judgements might also be influenced by biological variables. Since previous studies have reported stronger utilitarian tendencies in men, the relationship between testosterone and moral judgments has gained interest. Utilitarian judgements focus on the consequences of an action in terms of a cost-benefit analysis while deontological judgements are based on rules that are independent of an action's outcome or of situational features. We investigated decisions in moral dilemma situations in N = 157 young adults usin

Building comfort with ambiguity in nursing practice.

Current nursing literature recognizes the need to honor the concept of ambiguity. Nurses experience uncertainty with handling or honoring complexity and ambiguity when confronted with times of struggle. Traditional models of care fall short as patients and families define their expectations of the healthcare system. Nurses bear witness to the discomfort caused by the unknown in their daily practice. They are challenged to address their feelings, unsure of what to anticipate, what to say, or how to respond to their patients. Uncertainty diminishes the opportunity for meaningful dialogue between

Machine learning for development of an expert system to predict premature birth.

Normal pregnancy involves a term of 40 weeks gestation. Problems associated with low birthweight and prematurity continue to plague childbearing families and the healthcare system because 8-12% of all newborns in the United States deliver prior to 37 weeks gestation. The high cost of caring for premature babies increasingly treats all pregnant women as if they are 'high risk' for preterm birth. Artificial intelligence techniques used a machine learning program named LERS1 with large datasets (n = 18,890; 214 variables), statistical analysis, expert verification techniques, and a prototype expe

Application of artificial intelligence in audiology.

In this paper, machine learning methods based on artificial intelligence theory are applied to the computer-aided decision making of some otoneurological diseases, for example Ménière's disease. Three methods explored are decision trees, genetic algorithms and neural networks. By using such a machine learning method, the decision-making program is trained with a representative training set of cases and tested with another set. The machine learning methods are useful also for our otoneurological expert system, One, which is based on a pattern recognition approach. The methods are able to differ

The effect of working memory load on inattentional deafness during aeronautical decision-making.

Operating an aircraft requires pilots to handle a significant amount of multi-modal information, which creates a high working memory load. Detecting auditory alarms in this high-load scenario is crucial for aviation safety. According to cognitive control load theory, an increase in working memory load may enhance distractor interference, resulting in improved detection sensitivity for task-irrelevant stimuli. Therefore, understanding the effect of working memory load on auditory alarm detection is of particular interest in aviation safety research. The studies were designed to investigate the

Mental Fatigue and Sports Performance of Athletes: Theoretical Explanation, Influencing Factors, and Intervention Methods.

Mental fatigue is an important factor affecting athletes' performance. Explaining the effects of mental fatigue on sports performance from a theoretical point of view can help us deeply understand the interconnection between mental fatigue and sports performance and conduct effective interventions based on this. Combining the relevant literature in China and abroad reveals that the current academic theories on the mechanism of sports fatigue include motivational control theory, underload theory, neural waste disposal hypothesis, and resource depletion theory. The effects of mental fatigue on p

Anxiety impairs decision-making: psychophysiological evidence from an Iowa Gambling Task.

Using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and psychophysiological correlates of emotional responses (i.e., heart rate and skin conductance), we investigate the effects of trait anxiety (TA) on decision-making. We find that high TA is associated with both impaired decision-making and increased anticipatory physiological (somatic) responses prior to advantageous trials. For both high and low TA, skin conductance responses preceding advantageous trials predict decisions. At the same time, somatic responses to choice outcomes reflect differences between high and low TA sensitivities to punishments and re

Predicting rotator cuff tears using data mining and Bayesian likelihood ratios.

OBJECTIVES: Rotator cuff tear is a common cause of shoulder diseases. Correct diagnosis of rotator cuff tears can save patients from further invasive, costly and painful tests. This study used predictive data mining and Bayesian theory to improve the accuracy of diagnosing rotator cuff tears by clinical examination alone. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 169 patients who had a preliminary diagnosis of rotator cuff tear on the basis of clinical evaluation followed by confirmatory MRI between 2007 and 2011 were identified. MRI was used as a reference standard to classify rotator cuff tears

Cognitive strategies in the Emergency Medical Services: proposal for a conceptual integrated framework to explicate clinical reasoning in EMS.

BACKGROUND: Clinical reasoning is fundamental to safe and effective Emergency Medical Services (EMS) care. EMS providers operate in dynamic, time-pressured environments characterised by diagnostic uncertainty, limited information, and high-stakes decisions. These conditions necessitate rapid yet adaptable reasoning strategies. The SPART model was developed through focused ethnography and content validation to describe observable diagnostic and therapeutic activities in EMS practice. It provides a structured representation of the care process from dispatch to transfer of care, serving as a basis

Is an account of identity necessary for bioethics? What post-genomic biomedicine can teach us.

Is a theory of identity necessary for bioethics? In this paper I investigate that question starting from an empirical explication of identity based on post-genomics, in particular on epigenetics. After analysing whether the classic problems a theory of identity has to cope with (fictional transplants; conjoined twins; and definition of death) also affect the proposed epigenetic account of identity, I deal with three topics (the assumption of moral responsibility; decision maintenance in the case of advance directives; and the attribution of value to human beings at given developmental stages)

The priority heuristic: making choices without trade-offs.

Bernoulli's framework of expected utility serves as a model for various psychological processes, including motivation, moral sense, attitudes, and decision making. To account for evidence at variance with expected utility, the authors generalize the framework of fast and frugal heuristics from inferences to preferences. The priority heuristic predicts (a) the Allais paradox, (b) risk aversion for gains if probabilities are high, (c) risk seeking for gains if probabilities are low (e.g., lottery tickets), (d) risk aversion for losses if probabilities are low (e.g., buying insurance), (e) risk s
