The most serious problems resulting from a change in ambient pressure are pulmonary barotrauma with air embolism and decompression sickness. The small differential pressures used in ventilators at atmospheric pressure may tear lung tissue and, in diving, deaths have occurred from the expansion of pulmonary gas on an ascent of less than two metres. The bubbles of respired gas that enter the systemic circulation often occlude cerebral arteries and may cause infarction. In decompression sickness, bubbles form in the tissues from supersaturation of the nitrogen or helium absorbed under pressure. J

Preventive measures to reduce the risk of decompression sickness can involve several procedures such as oxygen breathing during in-water decompression. Theoretical predictions also suggest that brief periods of recompression during the course of decompression could be a method for controlling bubble formation. The aim of this study was to get clearer information about the effects of different experimental ascent profiles (EAPs) on bubble reduction, using pure oxygen or recompression during decompression for nitrox diving. Four EAPs were evaluated using bubble monitoring in a group of six milit

This paper reports the development of a model of spinal cord decompression sickness (DCS) which lends itself to studies of treatment in anesthetized dogs. Models tried early in this development could be used in the future to study blow-up and cerebral decompression sickness. We found that a dive with a bottom time of 12-15 min at 300 ft breathing air and decompressed in 5.5 min produced a high incidence of cord DCS, as diagnosed by changes in spinal evoked potentials (SEP). Furthermore the animals could generally be sustained on the surface using intravenous fluids, without going into shock, b

BACKGROUND: Recreational diving creates risk for decompression sickness (DCS), which can occur in SCUBA diving even if current decompression algorithms are respected. The aim of this study was to identify the primary risk factors for decompression sickness in real-world regular recreational diving.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study analyzed 127,957 dives from 5,907 divers in the DAN DSL database (version 07/2024) to identify independent risk factors for DCS in recreational diving.
RESULTS: Decompression sickness was reported in 628 dives, yielding an incidence rate of 0.49%. The most critical

Decompression sickness (DCS) is caused by gaseous nitrogen dissolved in tissues forming bubbles during decompression. To date, no method exists to identify nitrogen within tissues, but with advances in positron-emission tomography (PET) technology, it may be possible to track gaseous radionuclides into tissues. We aimed to develop a method to track nitrogen movement in vivo and under hyperbaric pressure that could then be used to further our understanding of DCS using nitrogen-13 (13N2). A single anesthetized female Sprague-Dawley rat was exposed to 625 kPa, composed of air, isoflurane, and 13

On firm ground our sense of balance is supplied by super abundant input from several sensoric sources. In other environments insufficient or conflicting input may cause vestibular problems. In diving, vertigo may be caused by a variety of influences, like sensory deprivation, optokinetic illusion, asymmetric vestibular stimulation, inner ear barotrauma, decompression sickness, breathing gas toxicity, high pressure neurological syndrome, sea sickness and intense noise. During space flight some of the mentioned mechanisms may contribute to vestibular problems, although space motion sickness bein

There is a high incidence of aseptic necrosis and decompression sickness among caisson workers due to inadequate decompression using the current OSHA decompression tables (1-7). Because of this, a new set of tables--Autodec III-O2--was developed which more effectively eliminates nitrogen from the body and, therefore, should decrease the incidence of both bends and aseptic necrosis. The Autodec III-O2 schedule's superiority was statistically significant at a level of 0.08 compared to the OSHA table. It is our conclusion that OSHA should adopt the Autodec III-O2 schedule as a replacement for the

INTRODUCTION: This is a review of commercial heliox saturation decompression procedures. The scope does not include compression, storage depth or bell excursion dive procedures. The objectives are to: identify the sources of the procedures; trace their evolution; describe the current practice; and detect relevant trends.
METHODS: Eleven international commercial diving companies provided their diving manuals for review under a confidentiality agreement.
RESULTS: Modern commercial diving saturation procedures are derived from a small number of original procedures (United States Navy, Comex, an

BACKGROUND: Scientific underwater exploration could benefit from professional diving facilities. This could allow marine research for durations far exceeding anything currently possible. The closed-circuit rebreather expansion provides new perspectives by unleashing divers and their diving bell. "Under the Pole Expeditions" developed an innovative compact underwater habitat for this purpose.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The habitat's depth was fixed at 20 m. Saturation lasted 3 days and was followed by a 245 min long decompression procedure with mandatory in-water phase. Isolation and environmental

The Swedish Armed Forces (SwAF) air dive tables are under revision. Currently, the air dive table from the U.S. Navy (USN) Diving Manual (DM) Rev. 6 is used with an msw-to-fsw conversion. Since 2017, the USN has been diving according to USN DM rev. 7, which incorporates updated air dive tables derived from the Thalmann Exponential Linear Decompression Algorithm (EL-DCM) with VVAL79 parameters. The SwAF decided to replicate and analyze the USN table development methodology before revising their current tables. The ambition was to potentially find a table that correlates with the desired risk of

Sphenoid sinus mucocele is a rare cystic lesion. It grows gradually and causes visual disturbances, ocular motility abnormalities and headache due to cavernous sinus compression. Sudden change in sinus cavity volume by a barotrauma may compress a mucocele and precipitate symptoms that may easily be confused with decompression sickness. A diver suffering from vertigo, nausea, blurry vision and hearing loss following uneventful dives is presented in this report. He underwent hyperbaric oxygen treatment for inner ear decompression sickness but later was diagnosed as sphenoid sinus mucocele. A hig

A Grumman EA-6B aircraft experienced a rapid pressurization failure at 27,000 feet. All four crew members had removed their oxygen masks and were breathing cabin air pressurized to 8,000 feet before the incident. Although none of the crew members developed signs or symptoms of decompression sickness, the potential for adversity was realized by all. Altitude decompression sickness (DCS) and pulmonary overinflation syndrome (POIS) represent potentially fatal complications of rapid decompression or uncontrolled ascent in aircraft. The signs and symptoms of DCS range from mild joint pain to eventu

A 27-year-old flight instructor experienced 5 to 10 minutes after a scuba-dive to 29 m, which lasted totally 50 minutes, dizziness, nausea and severe vertigo. The symptoms lasted about an hour. The patient vomited several times and noted sudden onset headache and vertigo lasting the following three days. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was started 30 hours after the event because decompression sickness was suspected. Transthoracic echocardiographic evaluation showed a patent foramen ovale. Diving accidents may be caused by decompression sickness, the formation of a free intravascular gas phase (bubb

INTRODUCTION: Breath-hold (BH) diving has known risks, for example drowning, pulmonary oedema of immersion and barotrauma. There is also the risk of decompression illness (DCI) from decompression sickness (DCS) and/or arterial gas embolism (AGE). The first report on DCS in repetitive freediving was published in 1958 and from then there have been multiple case reports and a few studies but no prior systematic review or meta-analysis.
METHODS: We undertook a systematic literature review to identify articles available from PubMed and Google Scholar concerning breath-hold diving and DCI up to Aug

Decompression illness is a collective term for two maladies (decompression sickness [DCS] and arterial gas embolism [AGE]) that may arise during or after surfacing from compressed gas diving. Bubbles are the presumed primary vector of injury in both disorders, but the respective sources of bubbles are distinct. In DCS bubbles form primarily from inert gas that becomes dissolved in tissues over the course of a compressed gas dive. During and after ascent ('decompression'), if the pressure of this dissolved gas exceeds ambient pressure small bubbles may form in the extravascular space or in tiss

PURPOSE: Animal studies have shown that recent musculoskeletal injuries increase the risk of decompression sickness (DCS). However, to date no similar experimental study has been performed in humans. The aim was to investigate if exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD)-as provoked by eccentric work and characterized by reduced strength and delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS)-leads to increased formation of venous gas emboli (VGE) during subsequent hypobaric exposure.
METHODS: Each subject (n = 13) was on two occasions exposed to a simulated altitude of 24,000 ft for 90 min, whilst breathing ox

Ultrasound is currently the optimal imaging modality in the decompression research field for assessing intracorporeal gas. Decompression sickness (DCS) is triggered by excess gas bubble presence in the body; however, the relationship is not well understood. Presently, the decompression physiology field does not have a strong predictive DCS biomarker. In this study, we explore the presence of lymph node decompression bubbles in a porcine model after a provocative hyperbaric exposure. Porcine test subjects (n = 37 subjects) underwent an aggressive decompression profile as part of a larger study,

Acute exposure to altitude principally encompasses aviation and space activities. These environments can be associated with very acute changes in pressure, oxygenation and temperature due to rates and magnitude of ascent that are not experienced in more chronic exposure such as mountaineering. The four key physiological challenges during acute exposure to altitude are: hypoxia (and hyperventilation), gas volume changes, decompression sickness and cold. The brief nature of aviation exposure to altitude provides little opportunity for acclimatisation, leading to markedly different effects when a

OBJECTIVE: A randomized controlled trial was reported recently, in which simple decompression and anterior subcutaneous transposition were compared for treatment of ulnaropathy at the elbow. Clinically, both surgical options seem to be equally effective. The objective of this study is to compare the costs, from a societal standpoint, of simple decompression versus anterior subcutaneous transposition in Euros.
METHODS: Published and unpublished data from a randomized controlled trial that compared simple decompression and anterior subcutaneous transposition were used. The investigators tabulat
