Identifying congenital generalized lipodystrophy using deep learning-DEEPLIPO.

Congenital Generalized Lipodystrophy (CGL) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by near complete absence of functional adipose tissue from birth. CGL diagnosis can be based on clinical data including acromegaloid features, acanthosis nigricans, reduction of total body fat, muscular hypertrophy, and protrusion of the umbilical scar. The identification and knowledge of CGL by the health care professionals is crucial once it is associated with severe and precocious cardiometabolic complications and poor outcome. Image processing by deep learning algorithms have been implemented in

Deep learning for predicting respiratory rate from biosignals.

In the past decade, deep learning models have been applied to bio-sensors used in a body sensor network for prediction. Given recent innovations in this field, the prediction accuracy of novel models needs to be evaluated for bio-signals. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of deep learning models for respiratory rate prediction. We consider three datasets from bio-sensors which include electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmogram (PPG) data, and surface electromyogram (sEMG) data. The deep learning models include Long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, Bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM), atte

Deep-learning model for screening sepsis using electrocardiography.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction and a major healthcare burden worldwide. Although sepsis is a medical emergency that requires immediate management, screening for the occurrence of sepsis is difficult. Herein, we propose a deep learning-based model (DLM) for screening sepsis using electrocardiography (ECG). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 46,017 patients who were admitted to two hospitals. A total of 1,548 and 639 patients had sepsis and septic shock, respectively. The DLM was developed using 73,727 ECGs from 18,142 patients, and internal validation

Deep learning for intelligent diagnosis in thyroid scintigraphy.

OBJECTIVE: To construct deep learning (DL) models to improve the accuracy and efficiency of thyroid disease diagnosis by thyroid scintigraphy. METHODS: We constructed DL models with AlexNet, VGGNet, and ResNet. The models were trained separately with transfer learning. We measured each model's performance with six indicators: recall, precision, negative predictive value (NPV), specificity, accuracy, and F1-score. We also compared the diagnostic performances of first- and third-year nuclear medicine (NM) residents with assistance from the best-performing DL-based model. The Kappa coefficient a

Object Detection at Level Crossing Using Deep Learning.

Multiple projects within the rail industry across different regions have been initiated to address the issue of over-population. These expansion plans and upgrade of technologies increases the number of intersections, junctions, and level crossings. A level crossing is where a railway line is crossed by a road or right of way on the level without the use of a tunnel or bridge. Level crossings still pose a significant risk to the public, which often leads to serious accidents between rail, road, and footpath users and the risk is dependent on their unpredictable behavior. For Great Britain, the

Autoregulatory Efficiency Assessment in Kidneys Using Deep Learning.

A convolutional deep neural network is employed to assess renal autoregulation using time series of arterial blood pressure and blood flow rate measurements in conscious rats. The network is trained using representative data samples from rats with intact autoregulation and rats whose autoregulation is impaired by the calcium channel blocker amlodipine. Network performance is evaluated using test data of the types used for training, but also with data from other models for autoregulatory impairment, including different calcium channel blockers and also renal mass reduction. The network is shown

Deep learning for cell image segmentation and ranking.

Ninety years after its invention, the Pap test continues to be the most used method for the early identification of cervical precancerous lesions. In this test, the cytopathologists look for microscopic abnormalities in and around the cells, which is a time-consuming and prone to human error task. This paper introduces computational tools for cytological analysis that incorporate cell segmentation deep learning techniques. These techniques are capable of processing both free-lying and clumps of abnormal cells with a high overlapping rate from digitized images of conventional Pap smears. Our me

Classification of acute lymphoblastic leukemia using deep learning.

Acute Leukemia is a life-threatening disease common both in children and adults that can lead to death if left untreated. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) spreads out in children's bodies rapidly and takes the life within a few weeks. To diagnose ALL, the hematologists perform blood and bone marrow examination. Manual blood testing techniques that have been used since long time are often slow and come out with the less accurate diagnosis. This work improves the diagnosis of ALL with a computer-aided system, which yields accurate result by using image processing and deep learning techniques.

Deep Geodesic Learning for Segmentation and Anatomical Landmarking.

In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework for anatomy segmentation and automatic landmarking. Specifically, we focus on the challenging problem of mandible segmentation from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and identification of 9 anatomical landmarks of the mandible on the geodesic space. The overall approach employs three inter-related steps. In the first step, we propose a deep neural network architecture with carefully designed regularization, and network hyper-parameters to perform image segmentation without the need for data augmentation and complex post-process

Deep learning based syndrome diagnosis of chronic gastritis.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), most of the algorithms used to solve problems of syndrome diagnosis are superficial structure algorithms and not considering the cognitive perspective from the brain. However, in clinical practice, there is complex and nonlinear relationship between symptoms (signs) and syndrome. So we employed deep leaning and multilabel learning to construct the syndrome diagnostic model for chronic gastritis (CG) in TCM. The results showed that deep learning could improve the accuracy of syndrome recognition. Moreover, the studies will provide a reference for construct

Xeno-learning: knowledge transfer across species in deep learning-based spectral image analysis.

Optical imaging techniques, such as hyperspectral imaging combined with machine learning-based analysis, have the potential to revolutionize clinical surgical imaging. However, these modalities face a shortage of large-scale, representative clinical data for training machine learning-based algorithms. While preclinical animal data are abundantly available through standardized experiments and allow for controlled induction of pathological tissue states, it is not ethically possible to obtain similar data from patients. To leverage this situation, we propose 'xeno-learning', a cross-species know
