Antiulcer properties of Glycyrrhiza glabra L. extract on experimental models of gastric ulcer in mice.

Glycyrrhiza glabra L. is used in folk medicine for treatment of stomach disorders including peptic ulcers. The hydroalcoholic extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (HEGG) was evaluated for antiulcerogenic activity and acute toxicity profile in mice. Various doses of HEGG (50-200 mg/kg) were administered orally to animals of different groups. Omeprazole and cimetidine at doses of 30 and 100 mg/kg were used as positive controls, respectively. Stomach was opened along the greater curvature then ulceration index was determined examining the inner lining of stomach. Oral administration of the extract at

Preconquest Peruvian neurosurgeons: a study of Inca and pre-Columbian trephination and the art of medicine in ancient Peru.

Trephination and craniotomy performed by abrasion, scraping, crosscut sawing, and drilling are the oldest known surgical techniques used by primitive peoples. As a result of archaeological findings, the human skull is the most frequently studied part of the excavated body, leading to the creation of a new aspect of anthropology known as "cultural osteology." Found in ancient tombs, the human remains, mummies, skeletons, and their belongings, including war instruments, pottery, clothing, jewels, and surgical instruments, constitute the richest source of insight into the lives and pragmatic acti

Impact of malpractice liability among spine surgeons: A national survey of French private neurosurgeons.

PURPOSE: In the general context of medical judicialization, spine surgeons are impacted by the part that medical responsibility and the risk of malpractice play in their actions and decisions. Our aim was to evaluate possible shifts in practices among private neurosurgeons who are highly exposed to this judicial risk and detect alterations in their pleasure in exercising their profession. We present the first national survey on French physicians' perception of surgical judicialization and consequences on their practice. METHODS: An online survey was submitted to the 121 members of the French

Bioethics and the national security state.

In previous work, I have described the history and ethics of human experiments for national security purposes during he cold war and developed the bioethical issues that will be apparent in the "war on terror". This paper is an attempt to bring these two previous lines of work together under the rubric of the "national security state," a concept familiar to Cold War historians and political scientists. The founding of the national security state was associated with the first articulations of informed consent requirements by national security agencies. My analysis indicates that strengthened co

Rethinking Contrast CT in the Emergency Department: Why Pretest Probability, Not Creatinine, Should Guide Our Decisions.

Contrast-enhanced CT plays a central role in diagnostic decision-making in the emergency department (ED). However, contrast administration is often delayed or avoided mainly based on serum creatinine levels, despite increasing evidence that the nephrotoxic risk of modern iodinated contrast agents is low. Such creatinine-centered decision-making may result in diagnostically inadequate imaging and delayed diagnosis of time-sensitive, high-risk conditions in emergency care. This commentary examines the persistence of creatinine-centered imaging heuristics and their diagnostic consequences in emer

Oxidative Stress-Mediated DNA Damage Induced by Ionizing Radiation in Modern Computed Tomography: Evidence for Antioxidant-Based Radioprotective Strategies.

Computed tomography (CT) is fundamental to modern medicine, yet ionizing radiation (IR) exposure causes DNA damage. Although often underestimated, at current doses, CT may account for ~5% of new cancer diagnoses. Complementary radioprotective approaches beyond dose reduction are needed. We conducted a prospective observational study to characterize IR-induced oxidative stress (OS)-mediated DNA damage in modern CT to explore potential antioxidant-based radioprotective strategies. In volunteers not exposed to IR (ANONE) and in patients with two-phase abdominal-pelvis CT (BEXPOSURE), blood sample

Does rheumatoid arthritis represent an adaptive, thrifty condition?

The present article presents epidemiological, and comparative evidence supporting the hypothesis that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may represent a thrifty adaptation selected to compel animals to minimize voluntary energy expenditure. The autoimmune, pathophysiological manifestations underlying RA are framed here as constituting an evolved, protective mechanism that would have influenced animals to avoid exertion and maintain a sedentary lifestyle in order to minimize metabolic output and ultimately escape starvation. Arthritic pain is characterized here as a defensive, innate signal much like fa

Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis decouples arsenic risk from saponin biosynthesis in Panax notoginseng (Araliaceae) by reprogramming rhizosphere and root processes.

Arsenic (As) contamination poses a serious threat to the safety and medicinal quality of Panax notoginseng, a high-value medicinal herb rich in triterpenoid saponins. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can improve plant tolerance to metal(loid) stress, but how AMF coordinate rhizosphere processes with host metabolic regulation to reduce As accumulation while maintaining medicinal quality remains poorly understood. Here, we integrated physiological assays, As partitioning and subcellular fractionation, rhizosphere microbiome profiling, root exudate metabolomics, phytohormone quantification, tra

Inflammation and carcinogenesis: molecular targets and small-molecule intervention strategies.

Inflammation is a finely tuned host defense mechanism whose perpetual activation is a driver, promoter, and supporter of carcinogenesis. Key mediators of chronic inflammatory processes, viz. NF-kB, JAK-STAT, inflammasomes, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and cytokine network, if left unanswered, foster the tumour-supportive environment. Within the tumour microenvironment (TME), inflammatory cells, in combination with stromal and cancerous cells, modulate these pathways and regulate critical tumour hallmarks. Therefore, efforts have been made to understand and tackle the interface between the in

Making inroads to precision medicine for the treatment of autoimmune diseases: Harnessing genomic studies to better diagnose and treat complex disorders.

Precision Medicine is an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle. Autoimmune diseases are those in which the body's natural defense system loses discriminating power between its own cells and foreign cells, causing the body to mistakenly attack healthy tissues. These conditions are very heterogeneous in their presentation and therefore difficult to diagnose and treat. Achieving precision medicine in autoimmune diseases has been challenging due to the complex etiologies of these conditions, involv

The Role of Circadian Clock Genes in Critical Illness: The Potential Role of Translational Clock Gene Therapies for Targeting Inflammation, Mitochondrial Function, and Muscle Mass in Intensive Care.

The Earth's 24-h planetary rotation, with predictable light and heat cycles, has driven profound evolutionary adaptation, with prominent impacts on physiological mechanisms important for surviving critical illness. Pathways of interest include inflammation, mitochondrial function, energy metabolism, hypoxic signaling, apoptosis, and defenses against reactive oxygen species. Regulation of these by the cellular circadian clock (BMAL-1 and its network) has an important influence on pulmonary inflammation; ventilator-associated lung injury; septic shock; brain injury, including vasospasm; and over

Flavonoids and Polyphenolic Compounds as Potential Talented Agents for the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease and their Antioxidant Activities.

Aging is a normal human cycle and the most important risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases. Alternations in cells due to aging contribute to loss of the nutrient-sensing, cell function, increased oxidative stress, loss of the homeostasis cell, genomic instability, the build-up of malfunctioning proteins, weakened cellular defenses, and a telomere split. Disturbance of these essential cellular processes in neuronal cells can lead to life threats including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Huntington's disease (HD), Lewy's disease, etc. The most common cause of death in the elderly population is AD

Botanicals: an alternative remedy to radiotherapy-induced dysuria.

Everyday, many patients get radiotherapy for prostatic, rectal, uterine cervix and other pelvic organs cancer. Dysuria is common in pelvic, especially prostate radiotherapy, but there is not any established and confirmed treatment for this therapeutic side effect. Therefore, an alternative therapeutic method, using herbal preparation, may be an effective solution. This study seeks a defensible suggestion in Iranian Traditional Medicine (ITM). In ITM, a few medicinal herbs such as Plantago psyllium, Cydonia oblonga, Portulaca oleracea and some species of Malvaceae and Cucurbitaceae family are i

Protective effect of phenolic acids from Chebulae Fructus immaturus on carbon tetrachloride induced acute liver injury via suppressing oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis in mouse.

Chebulae Fructus immaturus, a traditional Tibetan medicine, originated from the immature fruit of Terminalia chebula Retz., has been proven to have antioxidat function. However, its protection to injury liver cell caused by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) has not been clarified. This study evaluated the effect of phenolic acid from Chebulae Fructus immaturus (PATC) on CCl4-induced acute liver injury in mice and related molecular mechanisms. Our data showed that PATC had convincing protective effects on the CCl4-induced acute liver injury by enhancing the anti-oxidative defense system, ameliorating

A pathological view of disease.

This paper is a response to Christopher Boorse's recent defense of his Biostatistical Theory (BST) of health and disease. Boorse maintains that his concept of theoretical health and disease reflects the "considered usage of pathologists." I argue that pathologists do not use "disease" in the purely theoretical way that is required by the BST. Pathology does not draw a sharp distinction between theoretical and practical aspects of medicine. Pathology does not even need a theoretical concept of disease. Its focus is not theoretical, but practical; pathology's goal is to contribute to the healing

Deuterated Drugs: Isotope Distribution and Impurity Profiles.

A recent review identified the problem of lower isotopologues in deuterated active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) as a critical issue in this area of medicinal chemistry. In this Perspective, the relationship between overall enrichment and isotope distribution for deuterated APIs is discussed. Deuterated APIs are divided into single deuterium, methyl-d3, and polydeuterated compounds. For the latter category, distribution calculations demonstrate that the parent deuterated API contains significant quantities of the lower isotopologues. As an alternative to the use of overall enrichment to de

Integrative Insights Into UV-B-Induced Growth Regulation, Physiological Responses, Antioxidants, and Essential Oil Remodeling in Ocimum americanum L.

Ocimum americanum L. (American basil or lime basil), an aromatic annual herb of the Lamiaceae family, is widely recognized for its medicinal properties. Traditionally, it has been used in treating cough, respiratory disorders, rheumatism, and renal complications. In the context of global climate change and stratospheric ozone depletion, the increase in ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation poses a significant threat to plant health and productivity. Understanding how medicinal plants respond to elevated UV-B (eUV-B) is therefore crucial. This study examines the physiological and biochemical responses
