Effect of verapamil on an accessory pathway manifesting as "fatigue phenomenon" in Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Electrophysiologic study was performed in a 52-year-old man with type A ventricular preexcitation. An accessory atrioventricular pathway with no ventriculoatrial conduction was localized to the posteroseptal region. "Fatigue phenomenon," defined as suppression of atrioventricular conduction following rapid pacing, was observed to be provoked by atrial pacing in a rate- and duration-dependent manner. Administration of 5 mg of intravenous verapamil during sinus rhythm abolished the delta waves. These observations may indicate that pathologic changes in the accessory pathway are responsible for t

Quantitative electroencephalography in mild cognitive impairment: longitudinal changes and possible prediction of Alzheimer's disease.

The present study evaluated the clinical course of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the pattern of electroencephalography (EEG) changes following cognitive deterioration, as well as the potential of neurophysiological measures in predicting dementia. Twenty-seven subjects with MCI were followed for a mean follow up period of 21 months. Fourteen subjects (52%) progressed (P MCI) to clinically manifest Alzheimer's disease (AD), and 13 (48%) remained stable (S MCI). The two MCI subgroups did not differ in baseline EEG measures between each other and the healthy controls (n = 16), bu

Frontal Delta Decreasing and Occipital Ictal Alpha Increasing Associated With Migraine in Preictal and Ictal Phases.

Subtle changes across different migraine phases in resting electroencephalography (EEG) studies are commonly observed in migraine patients and have the potential to aid in clinical diagnosis. However, exploring the dynamic changes of brain activity across the migraine phases are extremely rare and difficult to analyze. This study aimed to longitudinally investigate the EEG spectral characteristics across the migraine phases in a paired EEG study. Ninety-five episodic migraine (EM) patients without aura and 59 control subjects participated in the study, and the resting close-eye EEG signals wer

Delta/gamma band network abnormalities and enhanced phase-amplitude coupling in anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 encephalitis.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize functional network abnormalities in patients with anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) encephalitis using electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings. METHODS: Eleven patients and eleven controls calculated relative power spectral density (PSD) and underwent functional connectivity analysis using corrected amplitude envelope correlation (AEC-c). Amplitude envelopes were extracted across five frequency bands, and network topology was analyzed by node strength. Phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) assessed cross-frequency interactions. RESULTS: Patients showed significa

Thalamic mechanisms underlying alpha-delta sleep with implications for fibromyalgia.

Alpha-delta sleep is the abnormal intrusion of alpha activity (8- to 13-Hz oscillations) into the delta activity (1- to 4-Hz oscillations) that defines slow-wave sleep. Alpha-delta sleep is especially prevalent in fibromyalgia patients, and there is evidence suggesting that the irregularities in the sleep of these patients may cause the muscle and tissue pain that characterizes the disorder. We constructed a biophysically realistic mathematical model of alpha-delta sleep. Imaging studies in fibromyalgia patients suggesting altered levels of activity in the thalamus motivated a thalamic model a

Atypical delta-band phase consistency and atypical preferred phase in children with dyslexia during neural entrainment to rhythmic audio-visual speech.

According to the sensory-neural Temporal Sampling theory of developmental dyslexia, neural sampling of auditory information at slow rates (<10 Hz, related to speech rhythm) is atypical in dyslexic individuals, particularly in the delta band (0.5-4 Hz). Here we examine the underlying neural mechanisms related to atypical sampling using a simple repetitive speech paradigm. Fifty-one children (21 control children [15M, 6F] and 30 children with dyslexia [16M, 14F]) aged 9 years with or without developmental dyslexia watched and listened as a 'talking head' repeated the syllable "ba" every 500 ms,

Timing-dependent differential effects of unexpected events on error processing reveal the interactive dynamics of surprise and error processing.

When unexpected events occur during goal-directed behavior, they automatically trigger an orienting-related cascade of psychological and neural processes through which they influence behavior and cognition. If the unexpected event was caused by an action error, additional error-specific, strategic-related processes have been proposed to follow the initial orienting period. Little is known about the neural interactions between action errors and unexpected perceptual events, two instantiations of unexpected events, in these two putative stages of post-error processing. Here, we aimed to address

Alterations in spontaneous delta and gamma activity might provide clues to detect changes induced by amyloid-β administration.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia and has an increasing incidence. The neuropathogenesis of AD is suggested to be a result of the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides in the brain. To date, Aβ-induced cognitive and neurophysiologic impairments have not been illuminated sufficiently. Therefore, we aimed to examine how spontaneous brain activities of rats changed by injection of increasing Aβ doses into the brain hemispheres, and whether these changes could be used as a new biomarker for the early diagnosis of the AD. Rats were randomized into following groups: s

Increased rates of intermittent rhythmic delta and theta activity in the electroencephalographies of adult patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder. In subgroups of patients with a (para)epileptic pathomechanism, this might be due to intermittent rhythmic delta or theta activity (IRDA/IRTA). PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Using a fully data-driven analysis, we compared the IRDA/IRTA rates in the resting electroencephalography (EEG) results of 97 adult patients with ADHD and 30 control subjects. The IRDA/IRTA rates before hyperventilation (HV) and for HV difference (difference between IRDA/IRTA rate after and before HV) were compared bet

Frontal EEG delta/alpha ratio and screening for post-stroke cognitive deficits: the power of four electrodes.

This study analysed correlations between post-stroke, quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) indices, and cognition-specific, functional outcome measures. Results were compared between QEEG indices calculated from the standard 19 versus 4 frontal (or 4 posterior) electrodes to assess the feasibility and efficacy of employing a reduced electrode montage. Resting-state EEG was recorded at the bedside within 62-101 h after onset of symptoms of middle cerebral artery, ischaemic stroke (confirmed radiologically). Relative power for delta, theta, alpha and beta, delta/alpha ratio (DAR) and pair

Prolonged nonepileptic twilight state with convulsive manifestations after febrile convulsions: a clinical and electroencephalographic study.

EEGs were obtained from 14 infants during behavior clinically diagnose d as prolonged febrile seizures. The clinical manifestations during EEG recordings resembled complex partial seizures (CPS) with convulsive manifestations, but the accompanying EEG waveforms were not epileptiform. Rather, two types of slow wave activity occurred: One was continuous diffuse delta (CDD) waves; the other was diffuse rhythmic theta (DRT) waves. I have termed these clinical states "nonepileptic twilight states with convulsive manifestations" (NETC). Because the CDD and DRT activity was similar to childhood arous

[Diagnostic value of electrophysiologic studies in presenile and senile dementia].

From the therapeutical point of view, reliable differentiations of different dementia types are required. Electrophysiological methods could be advantageous for this purpose. Healthy elderly people already show slight EEG-changes as slower alpha rhythm with decreased percent time and amplitude, furtheron temporal foci predominantly on the left side. Those changes partly are correlated with age, mental abilities, and vigilance. Considering clinical psychopathological findings, the EEG pattern can to some extent differentiate dementia types. The occurrence of disorganized diffuse theta and delta

A quantitative EEG method for detecting post clamp changes during carotid endarterectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To apply univariate and multivariate analyses of EEG spectral features in order to detect subtle post-clamp changes during carotid endarterectomy, and to devise a data-driven, multivariate classification method for rapid, real-time detection of small post-clamp EEG changes. METHODS: We used intraoperative EEG records of 27 patients who underwent carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and did not undergo a shunt per surgeon's and technologist's visual inspection of the electro-encephalogram (EEG). Furthermore, these records could not be flagged with r-sBSI (revised spatial brain symmetry inde

Experimental cortical stroke induces aberrant increase of sharp-wave-associated ripples in the hippocampus and disrupts cortico-hippocampal communication.

The functional consequences of ischemic stroke in the remote brain regions are not well characterized. The current study sought to determine changes in hippocampal oscillatory activity that may underlie the cognitive impairment observed following distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (dMCAO) without causing hippocampal structural damage. Local field potentials were recorded from the dorsal hippocampus and cortex in urethane-anesthetized rats with multichannel silicon probes during dMCAO and reperfusion, or mild ischemia induced by bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (CCAO). Bilateral c

Cortical Auditory-Evoked Responses in Preterm Neonates: Revisited by Spectral and Temporal Analyses.

Characteristic preterm EEG patterns of "Delta-brushes" (DBs) have been reported in the temporal cortex following auditory stimuli, but their spatio-temporal dynamics remains elusive. Using 32-electrode EEG recordings and co-registration of electrodes' position to 3D-MRI of age-matched neonates, we explored the cortical auditory-evoked responses (AERs) after 'click' stimuli in 30 healthy neonates aged 30-38 post-menstrual weeks (PMW). (1) We visually identified auditory-evoked DBs within AERs in all the babies between 30 and 33 PMW and a decreasing response rate afterwards. (2) The AERs showed

Predicting Major Depressive Disorder Using Neural Networks from Spectral Measures of EEG Data.

Processing electroencephalogram (EEG) data using neural networks is becoming increasingly important in modern medicine. This study introduces the development of a neural network method using a combination of psychological questionnaire data and spectral characteristics of resting-state EEG. The data were collected from 71 individuals: 42 healthy and 29 with major depressive disorder (MDD). We evaluated four classes of algorithms-traditional machine learning, deep learning (LSTM), ablation analysis, and feature importance analysis-for two primary tasks: binary classification (healthy vs. MDD) a

Artificial intelligence to diagnose paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia using electrocardiography during normal sinus rhythm.

AIMS: Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) is not detected owing to its paroxysmal nature, but it is associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease and worsens the patient quality of life. A deep learning model (DLM) was developed and validated to identify patients with PSVT during normal sinus rhythm in this multicentre retrospective study. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study included 12 955 patients with normal sinus rhythm, confirmed by a cardiologist. A DLM was developed using 31 147 electrocardiograms (ECGs) of 9069 patients from one hospital. We conducted an accuracy test with
