Mental Comorbidity and Psychosocial Care in Patients with Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer suffer from cancer- and treatment-specific, psychosocial and care-related stress and mental disturbances. METHODS: This article is based on pertinent publications retrieved by a search in PubMed, as well as on the German clinical practice guideline on psycho-oncology. RESULTS: The most common mental disorders in cancer patients are anxiety disorders, affective disorders, and adjustment disorders. The point prevalence of any mental disorder in patients with cancer is 20% to 50%. Common disease-associated psychological symptoms include distress (a non-specific

Development and assessment of a self-management intervention for urinary incontinence among patients with prostate cancer: protocol for a randomized feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence is a common complication among patients with prostate cancer who have undergone radical prostatectomy. Guided by social cognitive theory and a framework for the recovery of health and well-being, we propose to develop and test a self-management intervention for patients with prostate cancer who experience urinary incontinence after undergoing radical prostatectomy. METHODS: In this study, a self-management intervention for urinary incontinence (SMI-UI) is developed, comprising a mobile self-management application, a self-management handbook, and professional s

Dead-baby dreams, transfiguration and recovery from infant death trauma in northeast Brazil.

Maternal reactions to infant death in Northeast Brazil have been at the epicenter of anthropological debate since the 1980s. This ethnographic study of 45 death narratives by bereaved mothers collected from 1979-1989 in Pacatuba, Ceará, Brazil, refutes existing claims of mothers' "selective neglect" and "indifference" towards sick babies and emotionally empty grief response. I argue that through dead-baby dreams--and their imaginary transfiguration-grieving mothers alleviate infant death trauma. Feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, definitive loss, and personal guilt-the social seeds of dep

Institutionalized disadvantage: older Ghanaian nurses' and midwives' reflections on career progression and stagnation in the NHS.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the perceptions of career progression in the NHS of a group of midwives and nurses trained in Ghana and working in the UK. It draws on semi-structured interviews with nurses, midwives and managers which were conducted as part of the Researching Equal Opportunities for Overseas trained Health Professionals project (REOH). BACKGROUND: Research into overseas nurses in the UK has tended to focus on their experiences of discrimination in relationships with colleagues, managers and patients. There is limited statistical evidence indicating that migrant nurse

Nipple Reconstruction Using the "Arrow Flap" Technique: Outcomes and Patients Satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: Skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) entails complete removal of the breast tissue and the nipple and areola complex (NAC) with preservation of as much of the overlying skin as possible. The preservation of the natural skin envelope during SSM improves the aesthetic outcome of immediate breast reconstruction, but the lack of NAC determines that the reconstructed breast remains anatomically incomplete with not always satisfactory final results. For this purpose, the aim of the present study was to investigate and evaluate the impact of nipple reconstruction after skin sparing and skin re

Regardless of inequities in care, terminal anorexia nervosa exists: a response to Sharpe et al.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

We are pleased that the concept of terminal anorexia nervosa is being considered in serious discussion. Our previous presentations were not intended to assess eating disorders care broadly, but solely to bring attention to the importance of end-of-life care issues for patients with anorexia nervosa. Regardless of differences in ability to access or utilize health care resources, inescapably, individuals contending with end-stage malnutrition due to anorexia nervosa who refuse further nutrition will progressively decline, and some will die as a result. Our description of these patients' last da

Psychological Distress Among Patients With Advanced Cancer: A Conceptual Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is a common problem that occurs in advanced cancer patients; however, the concept has not been sufficiently specified or clearly described. OBJECTIVE: To develop succinct understanding of psychological distress among advanced cancer patients. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using the CINAHL, PubMed, and MEDLINE databases from 1988 to 2018. The analysis used the 8 steps of concept analysis developed by Walker and Avant. The final articles selected focused on definitions, predictors, determinant factors, and measurements of psychological distress i

Suicide intervention skills among Japanese medical residents.

OBJECTIVES: Patient suicide is a tragic occurrence, and it can be a demoralizing experience for medical residents. Few studies, however, have assessed suicide management skills among these front-line healthcare professionals. This study evaluated the self-assessed competence and confidence of medical residents with regard to the management of potentially suicidal patients and assessed the correlation with the residents' background characteristics. METHOD: The authors conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional survey of 114 medical residents in Japan, using a modified version of the Suicide Inte

Facial herpes zoster infection precipitated by surgical manipulation of the trigeminal nerve during exploration of the posterior fossa: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: We present a case of herpes zoster infection (shingles) precipitated by surgical manipulation of the trigeminal nerve root during an attempted microvascular decompression procedure. The pathogenesis of this phenomenon, as well as the importance and role of prophylactic acyclovir in its management, are discussed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old Caucasian man with a classical long-standing left-sided V2 and V3 division primary trigeminal neuralgia refractory to medical management, underwent posterior fossa exploration for microvascular decompression via a standard retromastoid cr

Psilocybin-assisted group psychotherapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction for frontline healthcare provider COVID-19-related depression and burnout: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression and burnout, which are common among healthcare workers, were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and psilocybin have been reported to reduce depressive symptoms, but the efficacy of the combination requires comparison to an active treatment control. We sought to evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of psilocybin and MBSR versus MBSR alone for frontline healthcare providers with symptoms of depression and burnout related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that psilocybin would augment the antidepressant effects of

Living with the Unknown: Intolerance of Uncertainty in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is marked by pervasive uncertainty due to fluctuating motor and non-motor symptoms, variable treatment response, and an unpredictable clinical course. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), a tendency to perceive ambiguity as threatening and respond with worry, avoidance, or decisional paralysis, may be consequential in PD, yet lacks a PD-focused synthesis. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize conceptual, qualitative, and emerging quantitative literature on IU in idiopathic PD, describe clinical and psychosocial correlates across the illness trajectory, and identify implica

Contribution of coping style to the association between illness uncertainty and demoralisation in patients with breast cancer: a cross-sectional mediation analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Demoralisation is a common psychological issue in patients with cancer and aggravates depression, reduces the quality of life and even causes suicidal ideation. There is a lack of knowledge about illness uncertainty, coping style and demoralisation in patients with breast cancer. The current study explored the relationship between illness uncertainty and demoralisation among those patients, as well as the potential mediating role of coping style. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: Participants were recruited from the Breast Tumor Center in a tertiary hospital in Shijiazhuan

Predictors of psychotherapy dropout in patients with borderline personality disorder: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a highly debilitating psychiatric condition. Despite the expansion of new BPD specific forms of psychotherapy in the last few decades, high dropout rates have been reported in these treatments. Treatment discontinuation is associated with poor patient outcomes, inefficient resource utilization and the demoralization of healthcare providers. METHODS: In order to identify predictors of psychotherapy dropout among patients with BPD, a systematic search of Medline, the Cochrane Library, PsycInfo and PsycArticles was conducted. Studies include

Discrete components of stress impact trajectories of childhood irritability but not adolescent mental health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to stressors during early childhood has been linked to irritability and subsequent mental health problems; however, little work has examined the unique and combined effects of distinct stress exposures on trajectories of childhood irritability or adolescent mental health symptoms. METHODS: Six components of family stress were assessed via maternal report at child age 5. Irritability was measured longitudinally at ages 7, 9, and 11. Adolescents self-reported on anxiety, depression, and externalizing symptoms at age 13-20. Latent growth mixture modeling examined classes of

Extending Validity Evidence for the MMPI-3: The Role of Collateral Report in Adult Assessment.

Integration of multiple data sources is central to evidence-based clinical psychological assessment. In adult assessments (in contrast to youth), data are typically obtained solely from clients; however, extant research suggests collateral ratings provide valuable additional information across the lifespan. The current study examined criterion-related and incremental validity of collateral-report via the ASEBA Adult Behavior Checklist (ABCL) in association with MMPI-3 Restructured Clinical and select Specific Problems Scales. We expected 1) modest correspondence between MMPI-3 scales and corre

Burnout Syndrome in forensic medicine and its association with vicarious trauma, posttraumatic stress syndrome and occupational stress.

The burnout phenomenon is a subject of considerable interest due to its impact on both employee well-being and scientific inquiry. Workplace factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic, play a pivotal role in its development, often leading to job dissatisfaction and heightened burnout risk. Chronic stress and burnout induce significant dysregulation in the autonomic nervous system and hormonal pathways, alongside structural brain changes. This paper presents a preliminary review of the literature on burnout syndrome among forensic science workers, focusing on the prevalence of this phenomenon and it

Refractory psycho-existential distress and continuous deep sedation until death in palliative care: The French perspective.

OBJECTIVE: Since February 2016, French Claeys-Leonetti law has recognized patients' right to confront incurable diseases with short-term prognosis and refractory physical or psychological or existential symptoms by requesting continuous deep sedation until death (CDSUD). Determining when psychological or existential distress is refractory and unbearable remains complex and controversial. This review provides a comprehensive thought on CDSUD for advanced incurable patients with refractory psychological and/or existential distress in palliative care settings. It offers guidance on psychiatric or
