[Rehabilitation and palliative care in cardiovascular diseases in Denmark].

An increasing number of Danes are living, and dying, with cardiovascular disease. There is good evidence for the impact of cardiac rehabilitation on coronary heart disease, heart failure and symptomatic peripheral arterial disease. However, more high-quality research is needed into a wider range of cardiac diseases including rehabilitation following cardiac arrest, and palliative care for patients with advanced heart disease. In this review it is discussed how to improve the quality of care and identify the direction of future research and development.

The disease burden of congenital toxoplasmosis in Denmark, 2014.

BACKGROUND: Congenital toxoplasmosis (CT) causes a substantial disease burden worldwide. The aim of this study was to estimate the disease burden of CT in Denmark, a developed country with free public healthcare and nationwide data available. METHODS: Using data primarily from two public health surveillance programmes conducted between 1992 and 2007, we estimated the incidence, occurrence of sequelae, mortality and the burden of disease in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of CT in Denmark in 2014. FINDINGS: We estimated that 14 children were born with CT in 2014, of which six

Infant botulism in Denmark from 1995 to 2015.

INTRODUCTION: Infant botulism is a rare, probably underdiagnosed, life-threatening disease caused by the toxin-producing bacterium Clostridium botulinum. METHODS: We investigated reported cases of infant botulism in Denmark from 1995 to 2015, and compared the incidence with that of other western countries. RESULTS: We found nine cases of infant botulism in Denmark from 1995 to 2015. The incidence of infant botulism in Denmark was similar to that seen in other western countries, but likely underestimated. The source of infection was only confirmed in a single case. Four cases received botulis

Early safety and efficacy of fingolimod treatment in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Initiation of fingolimod treatment is associated with a transient decrease of heart rate, and atrioventricular (AV) conduction block may occur. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic effect and safety of fingolimod treatment in MS patients in Denmark with focus on cardiac and pulmonary side effects at treatment onset. MATERIALS & METHODS: We analysed data from the first 496 fingolimod-treated Danish patients, observed for at least 3 months. In a subset of 204 patients, we monitored cardiac and pulmonary adverse effects following treatment initiation. RESULTS: The overall annuali

Tuberculous meningitis in Denmark: a review of 50 cases.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis is the most severe manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis with a high mortality rate and a high rate of sequelae among survivors. The aim of this study is to assess the current epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostic procedures, treatment and outcome in patients with tuberculous meningitis in Denmark, a country with a low tuberculosis incidence. METHODS: A nationwide retrospective study was conducted, comprising all patients notified with tuberculous meningitis (TBM) in Denmark from 2000-2008. Medical records were reviewed using a standardised prot

Prevalence of multiple sclerosis in Denmark 1950--2005.

Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system of unknown aetiology. Its prevalence varies by ethnicity and place: persons of northern European descent are at increased risk while persons living at lower latitudes appear to be protected against the disease. The Danish Multiple Sclerosis Registry is a national registry established in 1956 after a population-based survey which receives information from numerous sources. It is considered to be more than 90% complete, with a validity of 94%. Using data from the Registry, we calculated prevalences per 100,000 inhabitant

Causes of mortality in commercial organic layers in Denmark.

A longitudinal study investigated the courses of mortality in commercial free-range organic layer flocks in Denmark. In total, 15 organic egg-producing flocks from 11 farms were randomly selected among 80 farms registered in Denmark. Four farms with confined egg production on deep litter were included for comparison. Flock sizes ranged from 2260 to 5940 layers. The flocks were monitored from introduction to the layer farm until slaughter. Flock mortalities ranged from approximately 2% to 91%, with a mean of 20.8% for organic flocks compared with 7% for confined flocks on deep litter. In total,

Register-based studies on febrile seizures in Denmark.

During a short period of brain development, one out of 25 children experience seizures when exposed to fever. The risk and consequences of these febrile seizures remain incompletely understood. We have conducted a number of studies within a population-based cohort of 1.6 million children born in Denmark (1977-2004). We constructed the cohort by linking registers on civil service, health, and cause of death. We followed the cohort for up to 28 years with virtually no loss to follow-up. The aetiology of febrile seizures depends on a genetic susceptibility that can be transmitted through both par

Evaluation of serological tests for the diagnosis of rickettsiosis in Denmark.

Two commercially available immunofluorescence assays (IFA) were compared using historical sera evaluated for rickettsial antibodies by the Weil-Felix test. An IFA test produced by Focus Diagnostics prepared with Rickettsia rickettsii and R. typhi antigens was compared with a custom made kit from Fuller Laboratories with R. rickettsii, R. typhi, R. conorii and R. helvetica as antigens. The serum panel used for the comparison included Weil-Felix-positive and -negative samples. Cross-reactions were analyzed using serum samples from patients with clinical symptoms similar to those of rickettsiosis

Iodine intake and incidence of thyroid cancer in Denmark.

OBJECTIVE: Iodine intake is suspected to be a risk factor for thyroid cancer. Eastern Denmark is characterized by mild and western Denmark by moderate iodine deficiency, and this difference is associated with a 50% difference in the occurrence of goitre and thyrotoxicosis. The objective of the study was to determine whether the incidence of thyroid cancer differs between these two regions, as any difference would have important safety implications for the national iodine supplementation programme. DESIGN AND METHODS: We studied all thyroid cancers notified to the Danish Cancer Registry in the

Human thyroids collected from Gomel in Belarus, sheep thyroid from Jutland and human urine from Zealand in Denmark were analysed for 129I and 127I concentrations. The ratios of 129I/127I in human thyroid in Gomel are 2.65-11.0 x 10(-9) with an average of 7.21 x 10(-9), which is one order of magnitude higher than those from Asia and South America (10(-10)), but significantly lower than those observed in west Europe (10(-8)). A weak negative correlation (P < 0.05) between 129I/127I ratio in human thyroid and the age of the subjects was observed in Gomel. The average ratio of 129I/127I in sheep t

Prevalence of Bartonella infection in domestic cats in Denmark.

Whole blood and serum from 93 cats (44 pets and 49 shelter/stray cats) from Denmark were tested for the presence of feline Bartonella species by culture and for the presence of Bartonella antibodies by serology. Bartonella henselae was isolated from 21 (22.6%) cats. Bacteremia prevalence was not statistically different between shelter/stray cats (13/49, 26.5%) and pet cats (8/44, 18.2%), but varied widely by geographical origin of the cats, even after stratification for cat origin or age (p < 0.001). All isolates but one were B. henselae type II. The only cat bacteremic with B. henselae type I

Psychiatric illness and risk factors for suicide in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Several risk factors for suicide have been identified. We assessed the relative risks and population attributable risks of suicide associated with various socioeconomic factors and with previous mental illness that necessitated hospital admission. Our aim was to assist in the choice of potential strategies for preventing suicide in the general population. METHODS: We did a population-based nested case-control study based on register data. Data were collected on a random 5% sample of the Danish population aged 16-78 years during a 15-year period (1980-94) and analysed with conditio
