This study is based on data from routine follow-up registration following functional loading of a consecutive number of osseointegrated prostheses at the Dental School, University of Oslo. BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that tooth loss is greater in the osteoporotic patient population. Only a few cases have been reported in the literature about the use of dental implants in patients with osteoporosis. Diphosphonates are stable analogs of pyrophosphate, a physiologic regulator of calcification and bone resorption. Between January 1992 and October 1992, 100 Minimatic screw implants made of titanium alloy with rough acid-etched surfaces were placed in 63 consecutive partially edentulous patients. At second-stage (uncovering) surgery performed after a 4- to 6-month healing period, none of the implants showed any signs of mobility, peri-implant infection, or bone loss. This report demonstrates the successful clinical use of a modified root-analogue zirconia implant for immediate single tooth replacement. A right maxillary premolar was removed and a custom-made, root-analogue, roughened zirconia implant with macro-retentions in the interdental space was fabricated and placed into the extraction socket 4 days later. PURPOSE: The Integrated Abutment Crown (IAC) is a technique for the fabrication of single-tooth implant-supported crowns where the abutment and the crown are one unit. The abutment-crown complex is connected to the implant with a locking taper. This technique does not use cement to retain the crown or screws to retain the abutment.
