Child's nervous system : ChNS : official journal of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery2014eng
PURPOSE: This study aims to propose the dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) as a model for studying two features related to neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), i.e. augmented proliferative capacity and altered osteogenic differentiation.
METHODS: We isolated a DPSC from the pulp of deciduous teeth of a 6-year-old NF1 patient and two other healthy children of similar age. Cell proliferation was assayed by counting with a haemocytometer after successive cell re-plating. In order to compare osteogenic differentiation, we used osteoblast-differentiating medium and quantified alizarin stain, which relates

OBJECTIVE: Distraction osteogenesis has been widely used for the craniofacial region and even applied to alveolar bones to reduce the cleft width of cleft lip and/or palate patients. However, there have been no reports on the limitations on the total amount of lengthening that can be accomplished by distraction osteogenesis in this area. Therefore, we investigated how different extents of distraction osteogenesis affect the healing process using a canine cleft palate model.
METHODS: Six beagle dogs were used in this study. A bony segment including the canine was prepared and translocated into

In twelve patients aged 13 to 24, histological examinations of twenty persistent milk teeth (with persistency having been due to aplasia of permanent teeth) showed that root resorptions are possible in such cases too. Cellular resorption results in the root being decomposed lacunally or linerly, respectively. The formation of osteodentin, which is a result of the phase of apposition and which is taking place in the pulp and along the surface of resorption, respectively, is considered a characteristic concomitant phenomenon. However, this tissue does not cause "true ankylosis". Accordingly, use

The distribution of tenascin (TN), fibronectin (FN), and type III collagen (col III) in the extracellular matrix of the connective tissue of normal, inflamed, and hyalinized human dental pulp was studied by immunohistochemical staining with monoclonal antibodies against these molecules. TN, FN, and col III were present in all normal tissues studied. In areas of hyalinization only col III was observed. None of the molecules studied were seen in areas of inflammatory exudate. Strong staining for TN and FN was found in the periphery of all specimens analyzed next to the odontoblastic layer. We th

The effect of age on dental tissues was studied on histologic sections of totally impacted teeth obtained from patients between 11 and 76 years of age. Impacted teeth were used in order to obviate the influence of the environmental effects prevalent in the oral cavity. The presence of concentric denticles and diffuse calcifications was determined, and the width of secondary dentin, predentin, and cementum was measured. The width of predentin and cementum increased linearly with age, whereas the aging process of secondary dentin formation and diffuse calcifications followed a different pattern.

Three clinical cases of odontoma were detected in 2 children and 1 adolescent. The tumors were surgically removed. Clinical suspicion was based on facial deformity in one of the cases and on the absence of permanent tooth eruption in the other two. Radiographic evidence of odontoma was confirmed through histological study.

Five cases of transplantation of fully developed third molars to second or first molar sites have been reported. Three of the transplants were in the mandibular molar region and two were in the maxillary molar region. There has been long-term follow-up and evaluation of the patients in these cases up to 13 years postoperatively. None of the patients had any complaint about the transplanted tooth at the long-term follow-up visit. In all five cases, at the long-term follow-up visit, the periodontal tissues were in excellent condition and there was growth of new attachment, as demonstrated by lam

Invasive cervical resorption is a relatively uncommon form of external root resorption. There may be no external signs, and the resorptive condition is often detected by routine radiographic examination. Where the lesion is visible, the clinical features vary from a small defect at the gingival margin to a pink coronal discoloration of the tooth crown resulting in ultimate cavitation of the overlying enamel. The condition is usually painless unless pulpal or periodontal infection supervenes. Radiographic features of lesions vary from well-delineated to irregularly bordered mottled radiolucenci

Sickle cell anemia is a common hereditary hematologic disease. It affects many systems and tissues in the body, including the mouth. Delayed tooth eruption, an uncommon degree of periodontitis, alterations in the cells of the tongue surface, hypomaturation and hypomineralization in enamel and dentin, pulp calcifications, hypercementosis, and bone alterations resulting in maxillary protrusion and formation of a thick trabecular pattern are some oral manifestations of the disease. The aim of this study was to report the orthodontic treatment of a patient with sickle cell anemia. Treatment consis

A 5-year-old boy presented with otodental syndrome. His maxillary and mandibular incisors were within normal limits. The premolar/molar areas in all quadrants were occupied by markedly macrodontic teeth showing globular shape. The canines had a similar rounded shape. Two canines and 1 of the other abnormal teeth demonstrated areas of yellow hypoplastic enamel. Radiographs revealed that some of the abnormal teeth had bifurcated pulp chambers and pulp stones. Premolar tooth germs were absent. Audiometry demonstrated that the child had a marked bilateral sensorineural hearing loss for frequencies

Mutations in the genes encoding fibrillin, an extracellular matrix protein involved in providing elastic properties to the connective tissues, may result in specific craniofacial and oral anomalies. A number of craniofacial (retrognathia, dolichocephaly, high palate) and dental (root deformity, pulp calcification) manifestations are considered pathognomic for the Marfan syndrome (MFS), a condition caused by congenital fibrillin-1 deficiency. Reports on similar features in congenital contractural arachnodactyly (CCA), caused by fibrillin-2 deficiency, support the hypothesis that fibrillin defic

LIM mineralization protein 1 (LMP-1) is an essential positive regulator of osteoblast differentiation and maturation and bone formation. However, the expression and distribution of LMP-1 in human teeth are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to detect the expression of LMP-1 in normal healthy human teeth and human teeth with various pathologic conditions. LMP-1 expression was determined by immunohistochemistry in all of the samples including 12 healthy teeth, 10 teeth with caries, 12 teeth with pulpitis, and 4 teeth with pulp calcification. We found that LMP-1 was expressed primarily in

Curcumin (CUR) is an ancient therapeutic agent with remarkable antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The purpose of the current study was to synthesize and evaluate a curcumin-based reparative endodontic material to reduce infection and inflammation besides the induction of mineralization during the healing of the dentin-pulp complex. Poly-ɛ-caprolactone (PCL)/gelatin (Gel)/CUR scaffold was synthesized and assessed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Agar diffusion test was performed against E. coli, A. baum

122 traumatized teeth with radiographic evidence of abnormal hard tissue formation in the pulp cavity were examined 10-23 years (mean 16 years) after the time of injury. Judged radiographically, partial obliteration (pulp chamber not discernible, root canal markedly narrowed but clearly visible) had occurred in 44 teeth (36%). Normal periradicular conditions were found in all teeth with partial obliteration. Seventy-eight teeth (64%) were recorded as totally obliterated. Pathologic periradicular changes indicating pulp necrosis as a sequel to the total obliteration was observed in 16 teeth (21

Pulp canal calcification is characterized by the deposition of calcified tissue along the canal walls. As a result, the root canal space can become partially or completely obliterated. Recently, "guided endodontics" has been reported as an alternative solution in cases of partial or completed canal obliteration. Although this technique can enhance minimally invasive access to the calcified canal, it has been shown that the incisal surfaces are often removed during the access of anterior teeth. This report describes 2 cases of guided endodontics using conventional palatal access in calcified an

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine the correlation between proximal caries and the extent and site of pulp canal obliteration (PCO) in cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) scans of mandibular molar teeth.
METHODS: A total of 1491 CBCT scans of patients 18-49 years of age were selected from the database (2002-2022). From them, 328 teeth with proximal caries and satisfying inclusion criteria were evaluated by 2 calibrated evaluators. PCO was observed in the sagittal and coronal planes. PCO and proximal caries were compared concerning different age groups, sexes, and sites using an ind

BACKGROUND: Continued development and healing of an immature permanent tooth root was reported to have occurred. The continued viability of Hertwig's root sheath was thought to be necessary and responsible. Continued development of a tooth root separate from the body of the tooth was reported, but the initiation and development associated with a replanted tooth was not observed.
METHODS: A 9-year-old boy sustained an avulsion injury to his upper right lateral incisor. The tooth was replanted within 5-10 minutes of the incident and was splinted approximately 30 minutes after the injury, and th

When the apical focus (root cyst) is treated, if the tooth concerned can be preserved, the root canal should first be enlarged and cleaned sufficiently, and then sealed with filling materials. However, if an expensive prothesis is placed on the crown of the tooth concerned, or if the root canal is blocked with a post core of calcification, root canal treatment becomes difficult from a practical point of view. We therefore tried irradiation using the Nd-YAG laser, which is known for its high transmissibility into teeth, to the root canal, and the apical area. In its histological images it is co
