Fatigue behavior of removable partial denture cast and laser-sintered cobalt-chromium (CoCr) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) clasp materials.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the fatigue behavior of cast and laser-sintered cobalt-chromium (CoCr) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) material for a removable partial denture (RPD) clasps. METHODS: Dumbbell-shaped specimens were digitally designed with the center part of the dumbbell being a half-round shape at the cross-sectional dimension of 1.25 mm to simulate a typical clasp design and dimensions. A fatigue machine with an offset axis rotation system simulated a typical undercut depth of 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 mm. Each group was subjected to 30,000 fatigue cycles (simulating 21 years) or till sp

Custom-made resin-bonded attachments supporting a removable partial denture using the spark erosion technique: a case report.

A removable partial denture supported by resin-bonded precision attachments was constructed for a patient with intraoral symptoms of a cleidocranial dysostosis. Because of the anatomic situation, the youth, and the preprosthetic orthodontic treatment of the patient, a conventional prosthetic solution seemed inappropriate. Custom-made attachments were constructed with the spark erosion technique. They were fixed to the abutment teeth with resin-bonded retainers. The combination of the resin-bonding technique with the modern technology of spark erosion thus allowed a conservative approach to the

Veterans Administration Cooperative Dental Implant Study--comparisons between fixed partial dentures supported by blade-vent implants and removable partial dentures. Part II: Comparisons of success rates and periodontal health between two treatment modalities.

Five Veterans Administration centers have participated in a study to determine whether fixed partial dentures (FPDs) supported by blade implants offer an acceptable substitute for mandibular unilateral or bilateral distal-base extension removable partial dentures (RPDs). The study design and methodology have been described in Part I. A total of 232 patients received comprehensive dental care including RPDs for 118 patients and FPDs for 114. Prespecified criteria determined treatment failures. During the 60-month period, treatment failures occurred in 19 FPD patients and 30 RPD patients. Ten FP

Survival Rate of 3-unit Fixed Partial Dentures Replacing First Molars: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Fixed partial dentures (FPDs) made of 12% Au-Pd alloy are covered under Japan's national health insurance system. The survival rate of such 3-unit fixed FPDs remains unknown, however. The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess their survival rate in the replacement of first molars. A total of 140 FPDs were included, and the endpoint was removal of an FPD. During the observation period, 43 FPDs were removed. The FPD survival rate was 70.2% at 10 yr, 58.2% at 15 yr, and 42.1% at 20 yr according to the Kaplan-Meier method. The estimated mean survival period was 19.4 yr. The main reason

Maxillary rehabilitation using a removable partial denture with attachments in a cleft lip and palate patient: a clinical report.

Clefts of the lip and/or palate (CLP) are oral-facial defects that affect health and overall quality of life. CLP patients often need multidisciplinary treatment to restore oral function and esthetics. This paper describes the oral rehabilitation of a CLP adult patient who had maxillary bone and tooth loss, resulting in decreased occlusal vertical dimension. Functional and cosmetic rehabilitation was achieved using a maxillary removable partial denture (RPD) attached to telescopic crowns. Attachment-retained RPDs may be a cost-effective alternative for oral rehabilitation in challenging cases

A clinical survey of removable partial dentures. --Analysis of follow-up examinations over a sixteen-year period--.

In order to carry out the proper prosthetic treatment, it is necessary to select the method of treatment on the basis of accurate information concerning the prognosis of the prosthetic appliance. The oral structures are particularly proved to change when partial dentures are being used because the structures of the partial dentures are quite complex and they are easily broken. Therefore, in an attempt to analyze the changes that occur in the oral structures and partial dentures after insertion of the partial dentures, we conducted 3 series of follow-up examinations. The author sent out questio

Numerical study of the stress state on the oral mucosa and abutment tooth upon insertion of partial dentures in the mandible.

The introduction of a removable partial denture onto the dental arch significantly influences the mechanical stress characteristics of both the jawbone and oral mucosa. The aim of this study was to analyze the stress state caused by biting forces upon insertion of partial dentures into the assembly, and to understand the influence of the resulting contact pressure on its retention behavior. For this purpose, a numerical model of a removable partial denture is proposed based on 3D models developed using computer tomography data of the jawbone and the removable partial denture. The denture syste
