Examining a transdiagnostic measure of repetitive thinking in depressed, formerly depressed and never-depressed individuals.

BACKGROUND: Evidence that repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a shared feature of a number of disorders has prompted the need for transdiagnostic self-report instruments; that is, measures of RNT that can be administered to individuals irrespective of their diagnosis. The Repetitive Thinking Questionnaire (RTQ; McEvoy et al., 2010) was developed to meet this need, and its psychometric properties and capacity to predict psychopathology have been tested in undergraduate and clinically anxious samples. METHODS: We administered the RTQ to currently depressed (n = 29), formerly depressed (n = 61

Diagnostic accuracy of the Geriatric Depression Scale-30, Geriatric Depression Scale-15, Geriatric Depression Scale-5 and Geriatric Depression Scale-4 for detecting major depression: protocol for a systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The 30-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30) and the shorter GDS-15, GDS-5 and GDS-4 are recommended as depression screening tools for elderly individuals. Existing meta-analyses on the diagnostic accuracy of the GDS have not been able to conduct subgroup analyses, have included patients already identified as depressed who would not be screened in practice and have not accounted for possible bias due to selective reporting of results from only better-performing cut-offs in primary studies. Individual participant data meta-analysis (IPDMA), which involves a standard systematic

A comparison of outcomes of patients with depression, recurrent depression, and depression and anxiety within patients in a British CMHT.

INTRODUCTION: Many patients in Community Mental Health Teams have a diagnosis of depression F32, recurrent depression F33, and depression and anxiety F41.2, and such patients are often considered by team managers as being suitable for discharge to primary care. It is necessary to describe factors that influence outcomes, specifically discharge, in order to identify suitable patients who might continue their treatment in primary care. We aimed to assess the influence of suicidality, alcohol and drug abuse and augmentation strategies on the discharge status of patients treated by the Bedford Eas

A three-year follow-up of major depression, dysthymia, minor depression and subsyndromal depression: results from a population-based study.

This study examined the 3-year outcome of major depression (MD)/dysthymic disorder (DD), minor depression (MinD), and subsyndromal symptomatic depression (SSD) in a population-based sample. The aims were to study the fluctuating nature of the symptoms of depression and to analyze the risk of fulfilling the criteria for MD/DD at the follow-up. An extensive questionnaire was sent out to persons ages 20-64 years registered in Stockholm County. Depression was assessed with the Major Depression Inventory. After 3 years the procedure was repeated, and 8,622 persons participated in both waves. Diagno

Comparison of DSM-III-R chronic major depression and major depression superimposed on dysthymia (double depression): validity of the distinction.

The nosology of chronic depression has become increasingly complex since the publication of the revised third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III-R; American Psychiatric Association, 1987), but there are few data available to evaluate the validity of the distinctions between the subtypes of chronic depression. The validity of the distinction between DSM-III-R chronic major depression (CMD) and major depression superimposed on dysthymia (double depression, DD) was examined. Participants were 635 patients with chronic depression in a 12-week trial of ant

The effects of exercise and rTMS on depression symptoms in adolescents depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression represents a leading cause of disability among adolescents worldwide, underscoring an urgent need for effective and accessible interventions. While pharmacotherapy is a first-line treatment, adjunctive non-pharmacological approaches like aerobic exercise and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have shown promise. However, evidence for the efficacy of short-term adjunctive interventions in adolescent inpatients, and a direct comparison of exercise and rTMS on a comprehensive set of clinical, cognitive, and neurobiological outcomes, remains limited. METHOD

Characterising depression trajectories in young people at high familial risk of depression.

BACKGROUND: Parental depression is a common and potent risk factor for depression in offspring. However, the developmental course of depression from childhood to early-adulthood has not been characterized in this high-risk group. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from 337 young people who had a parent with a history of recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD), we characterized trajectories of broadly defined depressive disorder using latent class growth analysis. We used clinical descriptions to further characterise trajectory classes. RESULTS: Two trajectory classes were identified: childho

Epidemiology of pharmaceutically treated depression and treatment resistant depression in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of pharmaceutically treated depression (PTD) and treatment resistant depression (TRD) is largely unknown in South Korea. The aim of this study was to develop a greater understanding of the characteristics of PTD and TRD in nearly the entire adult population in South Korea using the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA). METHOD: Diagnostic codes and prescription data for South Korean adults were extracted from the HIRA. Subjects were included in the PTD cohort if they received at least one prescription for antidepressants and were diagnosed with dep

Subsyndromal Manifestations of Depression in Children Predict the Development of Major Depression.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the utility of assessing subsyndromal symptoms of major depressive disorder in childhood, indexed through the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) anxiety/depression scale, in predicting risk of developing major depressive disorder in adolescent and young adult years. STUDY DESIGN: The sample consisted of 537 children, 6-17 years of age, originally ascertained for a longitudinal family genetic study of youth with and without attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and their first-degree relatives who were followed prospectively and blindly for 10 years from childhood into y

Pycnogenol ameliorates depression-like behavior in repeated corticosterone-induced depression mice model.

Oxidative stress is considered to be a mechanism of major depression. Pycnogenol (PYC) is a natural plant extract from the bark of Pinus pinaster Aiton and has potent antioxidant activities. We studied the ameliorative effect of PYC on depression-like behavior in chronic corticosterone- (CORT-) treated mice for 20 days. After the end of the CORT treatment period, PYC (0.2 mg/mL) was orally administered in normal drinking water. Depression-like behavior was investigated by the forced swimming test. Immobility time was significantly longer by CORT exposure. When the CORT-treated mice were supple

Depression and pregnancy stressors affect the association between abuse and postpartum depression.

To determine how psychosocial factors affect the association between a history of abuse and postpartum depression (PPD). Women at four urban hospitals in Utah were enrolled ≤ 48 h of delivering a live-born infant. At enrollment, pregravid history of physical or sexual abuse was obtained via self-report. Psychosocial covariates such as pregnancy stressors and depression were also collected. Pregnancy stressors were categorized using "stressor" questions from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. The primary outcome measure, a pre-specified Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score o

The relationships between obsessional personality, obsessions in depression, and symptoms of depression.

The relationships between obsessional personality, obsessions in depression, and symptoms of depression were investigated by means of a retrospective study of case notes and item sheets. One hundred and sixty-eight cases of depression, aged 20 to 29 years, were rated for obsessional personality as defined by Ingram (1961). The presence of previous obsessions, of obsessions in depression and of eight symptoms of depression was assessed from the item sheets. Obsessional personality was found to be significantly associated only with a decreased frequency of objective apathy, although it seemed to

The impact of levodopa on post-stroke depression: the ESTREL-depression-study.

INTRODUCTION: Post-stroke depression (PSD) frequently occurs after acute stroke and negatively affects rehabilitation. Dopamine has beneficial effects on motivation and emotional stability. In stroke patients, low dopamine levels are linked to PSD. This study investigated whether levodopa treatment during in-hospital rehabilitation impacts PSD compared to placebo. PATIENTS AND METHODS: ESTREL-Depression was a pre-planned analysis of the multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled ESTREL trial. Participants with an acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke were randomly assigned to re

EEG microstates in adolescent depression: Effects of depression severity and overall symptoms.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) microstates are emerging as potential biomarkers for major depressive disorder (MDD), yet their characteristics in adolescent MDD with varying depression and anxiety severity remain underexplored. This study investigated the relationship between EEG microstate dynamics and symptom severity in 65 adolescents diagnosed with MDD. We assessed symptom severity using the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90). Resting-state EEG data were recorded for 5 min (eyes closed) using a 64-channel system and analyzed v

Association of Familial Aggregation of Major Depression With Risk of Major Depression.

IMPORTANCE: Major depression (MD) aggregates within families, but how family history of MD confers risk of MD over the life course is unclear. Such knowledge is important to identify and prevent possible depressogenic effects of family environment. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between family MD history and risk of MD including association with age, sex, type of kinship, and age of the affected family member. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included all Danish citizens born from 1960 to 2003 with known parental identity followed up from their 15th birthday until

Baseline depression severity as moderator on depression outcomes in psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based treatments for adult depression include psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, yet little is known about how baseline depression severity moderates treatment outcome. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare the effects of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy for adult depression and to examine the association between baseline depression severity and treatment outcome, converting multiple baseline depression measures into the scores of the Beck Depression Inventory, second edition (BDI-II). METHODS: We conducted systematic searches in bibliographical databases up to September 2022

Cerebral perfusion in depression: Relationship to sex, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and depression severity.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disease burden and shows a marked sexual dimorphism. Previous studies reported changes in cerebral perfusion in MDD, an association between perfusion and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) levels, and large sex differences in perfusion. This study examines whether perfusion and DHEAS might mediate the link between sex and depressive symptoms in a large, unmedicated community sample. METHODS: The sample included 203 healthy volunteers and 79 individuals with past or current MDD. Depression severity was assessed with the Hami
