[The current role of cerebral angiography in diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease].

The role of cerebral angiography in diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease has changed considerably because of the increasing availability of neuroimaging (CT, MRI), especially MR angiography (MRA). MRA has almost entirely taken the place of cerebral angiography as a screening procedure in evaluation of the cervical carotid arteries and main trunks of intracranial arteries. However, detection of accurate morphological changes of arterial walls requires cerebral angiography, especially in cases of arteritis, arterial dissection and aneurysm of smaller than 3 mm in diameter. Cerebral angiography i

Vibratory and tactile sense of the fingers after working with sanders.

Twenty-four volunteers worked four times in a laboratory under realistic conditions for 80 min with a relatively intensely vibrating plane-sander and a less intensely vibrating band-sander (each sander twice). Immediately before and after exposure, the left and right third finger was measured for vibratory sense with a 100 Hz rod-vibrameter and for width- and depth-sense by means of an apparatus modified after Carlson. The reproducibility of the parameters was poor: coefficients of intra-individual variation were 20 to 60%. After using the plane-sander the threshold of the width-sense in the r

Axes of self-motion and object motion shape how we perceive world-relative motion.

When we move through the environment, the direction of objects in the optic array changes, producing an optic flow. To perceive world-relative object motion during self-motion, complex flow vectors are decomposed during a process called flow parsing. The real world and realistic VR environments contain abundant depth and distance cues, including size and binocular disparities. When targets move in various directions, the distance signals potentially aid in the flow parsing process. We designed two experiments with our wide-field stereoscopic environment. Participants observed target motions du

The visual representation of 3D orientation in macaque areas STPp and VPS.

In the current study, we investigated the neural mechanisms underlying the representation of three-dimensional (3D) surface orientation within the posterior portion of the superior temporal polysensory area (STPp) and the visual posterior Sylvian area (VPS) in the macaque brain. Both areas are known for their integration of visual and vestibular signals, which are crucial for visual stability and spatial perception. However, it remains unclear how exactly these areas represent the orientation of 3D surfaces. To tackle this question, we used random dot stereograms (RDS) to present 3D planar sti

Visual representation of malleable and rigid objects that deform as they rotate.

Most studies and theories of object recognition have addressed the perception of rigid objects. Yet, physical objects may also move in a nonrigid manner. A series of priming studies examined the conditions under which observers can recognize novel views of objects moving nonrigidly. Observers were primed with 2 views of a rotating object that were linked by apparent motion or presented statically. The apparent malleability of the rotating prime object varied such that the object appeared to be either malleable or rigid. Novel deformed views of malleable objects were primed when falling within

An Endoscopic Transcanal Transpromontorial Approach for Vestibular Schwannomas using a Computer-Based Three-Dimensional Imaging System.

A 2D monocular endoscope has been used in transcanal transpromontory vestibular schwannoma surgery instead of craniotomy. However, the absence of depth perception is the limitation of this approach. With the loss of depth perception, the surgeon will be not able to perform delicate and particularly complicated surgery. A binocular endoscope has been developed to provide stereoscopic vision with better depth perception for complicated anatomic structures and has been applied in some endoscopic surgeries. However, the diameter of the endoscope is a limitation in the performance of transcanal oto

Seeing double and depth with Wheatstone's stereograms.

Charles Wheatstone, in his classic paper on the invention of the stereoscope, concluded "... objects whose pictures do not fall on corresponding points of the two retinae may still appear single" (1838 Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 128 384). Soon after, Ernst Brücke, Alexandre Prévost, David Brewster, Joseph Towne, and Joseph LeConte all published disagreements with this conclusion. LeConte's objections were most frequent and most prolonged. To understand the basis of the disagreements, we conducted three experiments using Wheatstone's original stereograms and found

What happens next in dynamic natural scenes: Temporal discrimination is modulated by motion and scene context but not stereoscopic depth.

We investigated mental representations of real road scenes using a prediction task. On each trial, 48 licensed drivers watched a road scene for 2 seconds and immediately after selected what the scene would look like 2 seconds in the future in a five-alternative forced choice (5AFC) task. We factorially manipulated three visual properties of the preview to examine their effects on performance: motion, scene context, and stereoscopic depth. We developed a binocular dashcam video dataset of real road scenes simulating human interpupillary distance. We manipulated motion by displaying still images

Recognition of apertures in overhead transparent barriers by leopard frogs.

Anurans have independent systems for detecting moving stimuli and stationary opaque objects. We have discovered that leopard frogs will also orient to, and spontaneously and accurately jump through, circular apertures in overhead transparent covers. When given a choice between one large aperture of 3.8 cm diameter, and three apertures of smaller but equal diameter (2.5 cm diameter, 1.9 cm diameter, or 1.3 cm diameter) they choose the larger diameter aperture at a frequency (64, 87 and 97%, respectively) that is statistically greater than chance. In only 1 of 255 attempts was there a jump to th

Visuomotor control when reaching toward and grasping moving targets.

Two experiments were conducted to examine the influence of target motion on the control and coordination of reaching and grasping movements. In Experiment 1 all the measures which reflected the transport or reaching phase of prehension (movement time, peak velocity, time to peak velocity, and transport tau margin) were sensitive to the velocity of the target, with subjects moving even slower than during the stationary trials, when the target was moving very slowly. Measures which reflected grasp formation such as the size of maximum aperture and the grasping tau margin were not influenced by t

Freeform extended depth-of-focus intraocular lens for more robust performance against physiological variations.

SIGNIFICANCE: Extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs) aim to provide improved visual performance over a range of distances, but their clinical outcomes are still sensitive to individual biometric variability. Improving the robustness of EDOF IOL optical performance to these patient-specific variations is critical to enhance visual predictability and patient satisfaction following cataract surgery. AIM: We aim to determine if freeform surfaces can improve the robustness of EDOF IOLs by maintaining consistent optical performance (refractive error, depth of field) despite indivi

Fixation instability, astigmatism, and lack of stereopsis as factors impeding recovery of binocular balance in amblyopia following binocular therapy.

Dichoptic therapy is a promising method for improving vision in pediatric and adult patients with amblyopia. However, a systematic understanding about changes in specific visual functions and substantial variation of effect among patients is lacking. Utilizing a novel stereoscopic augmented-reality based training program, 24 pediatric and 18 adult patients were trained for 20 h along a three-month time course with a one-month post-training follow-up for pediatric patients. Changes in stereopsis, distance and near visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity for amblyopic and fellow eyes were measur

A computational model of stereoscopic prey capture in praying mantises.

We present a simple model which can account for the stereoscopic sensitivity of praying mantis predatory strikes. The model consists of a single "disparity sensor": a binocular neuron sensitive to stereoscopic disparity and thus to distance from the animal. The model is based closely on the known behavioural and neurophysiological properties of mantis stereopsis. The monocular inputs to the neuron reflect temporal change and are insensitive to contrast sign, making the sensor insensitive to interocular correlation. The monocular receptive fields have a excitatory centre and inhibitory surround

Extended depth of focus intraocular lenses for presbyopia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the various extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses currently available to patients and to describe visual outcomes and patient satisfaction. RECENT FINDINGS: EDOF lenses are a relatively new option for presbyopic correction. Preliminary studies show high levels of spectacle independence and patient satisfaction. The only United States Federal Drug Administration-approved intraocular lens currently on market is the TECNIS Symfony (Johnson and Johnson Vision, Jacksonville, FL). SUMMARY: Early studies show that EDOF lenses may provide satisfactory near

Monocular fitting: a viable alternative for the presbyope.

Monovision, the practice of using non-bifocal corrections by fitting one eye for distance and the other for near seeing, is neither occlusion nor is it a serious hinderance in judging distance for many, but it breaks with the traditional concepts of binocular seeing.

Motion Misperception in Anisomyopia Before and After Optical Correction.

PURPOSE: To investigate interocular delay in anisomyopes at different spatial frequencies. METHODS: Interocular delay (difference in processing speeds between eyes) was measured psychophysically in 21 anisomyopes (observers with a large refractive difference), 20 isomyopes, and 19 emmetropes at 0.5, 1, and 2 cycles per degree (c/deg). During the visual task, small Gabor elements with lateral movements were shown to both eyes. When interocular delay was present, the stimuli created an illusory percept of a cylinder rotating in depth (motion misperception) despite no depth cues. Anisomyopes and

Monovision: a review of the scientific literature.

We reviewed the scientific literature on monovision to compare the visual performance of monovision patients with that of others wearing more traditional prescriptions. We found that visual performance of monovision patients was comparable to that of control patients wearing a balanced binocular correction, provided that reading adds were not greater than about +2.5 D, that illumination was photopic, and that stimuli were presented at supra-threshold levels. Under these conditions, monovision patients were satisfied with their perceptual experience and performed within 2 to 6% of balanced bino

Vergence control across saccades in dyslexic adults.

Many aspects of vision have been investigated in developmental dyslexia. Some research suggests deficits in vergence control (e.g. Buzzelli, 1991, Optom. Vision Sci. 68, 842-846), although ability to control vergence across saccades has not yet been investigated. We have explored this question indirectly using Enright's (1996 Vision Res. 36, 307-312.) sequential stereopsis task. The task requires observers to set two adjacent targets (whose textures cannot be resolved simultaneously if either is fixated) to appear equi-distant. Enright has argued that sequential stereopsis stereoacuity thresho

Capture of the visual direction of monocular objects by adjacent binocular objects.

Investigations of binocular visual direction have concentrated mainly on stationary objects. Eye positions were generally not measured and binocular fixation was assumed to be perfect. During the viewing of stationary objects, vergence errors are not negligible but small. During the viewing of moving objects, however, errors in binocular fixation are much larger. Existing rules for binocular visual direction were examined under the latter, more demanding viewing conditions. Eye movements were measured objectively by the scleral coil technique. Subjects viewed a large stereogram in which the ha
