Dermatomycoses pose significant zoonotic and public health challenges, involving interactions among fungal agents, host immunity, and environmental reservoirs. Eight cases of dermatophyte infection involving five humans, two cats and one dog were investigated in the Umbria region applying a One-Health approach, as recommended by the CDC. Fungal isolates were identified by mycological and molecular methods as Microsporum canis (n = 4), Nannizzia gypsea (n = 3), and Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes genotype III* (n = 1). The source of infection was identified in four cases enablin

Dermatomycoses are a superficial fungal infections affecting of the skin, hair and nails. While dermatophytes are recognized as the primary causative agents of fungal skin infections, the significance of yeasts and molds in this context warrants greater attention. The present study analyzed samples from patients suspected of non-dermatophyte superficial infections who were referred to dermatology clinics in Babol. The collected samples underwent direct microscopic examination and culture. Identification of the isolates was performed using standard mycological laboratory techniques, including m

A 64-year-old woman presented with a fist-sized, severely painful lesion with scales, crusts, pustules, erythema with subcutaneous abscess, and hair loss on the left temporal region. Direct microscopic examination revealed a large number of spores around the hair, which indicated ectothrix hair invasion, and some hyphae were also found. Histopathological examination showed significant inflammatory cell infiltration from the dermis to the subcutaneous tissues and into the hair follicles, destruction of the hair follicles with granulomatous reactions, and fungal masses along the hair within the

Microsporum gypseum causes dermatomycoses in giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). This study aimed to investigate the immune response of M. gypseum following deep infection. The degree of damage to the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys was evaluated using tissue fungal load, organ index, and histopathological methods. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) detected the mRNA expression of receptors and cytokines in the lung, and immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometry, were used to assess immune cells in the lung. The results indicated that conidi

Fungal skin and nail infections are common health issues affecting an estimated 10%-20% of the world's population. The antifungal agent terbinafine shows broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of fungal species and is commonly prescribed as a first-line treatment for dermatomycoses and onychomycoses. However, owing to insufficient data regarding embryotoxicity and adverse pregnancy outcomes, treatment with terbinafine is currently not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of gestational terbinafine exposure on congenital malforma

AIM: The present work was undertaken in order to study the epidemiology of dermatophytoses in the island of Crete, Greece, over a 7-year period (2004-2010) and to compare the results with those reported earlier from this region and from other parts of the world.
METHODS: A total of 3236 clinical specimens obtained from 2674 patients with signs of dermatomycoses were examined by direct micropscopy and culture.
RESULTS: Overall, 392 specimens (12.1%) were proved mycologically positive for dermatophytes. The age of the patients ranged from 2 to 90 years (mean age, 41 years). Onychomycosis was t

BACKGROUND: Skin infection is a frequent complication in renal transplant recipients. The purpose of the study was to acquire long-term, period-specific incidence data on the most commonly occurring skin infections in renal transplant recipients.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed using medical records of 134 patients, covering a period between 10 and 29 yr. Cumulative incidences of the skin infections were calculated by counting the infections per patient for different time periods and were expressed as a percentage of the total group of patients. The incidence of the skin infec

In the period between April 1984 and April 1988 a total of 4,294 clinically suspected cases of dermatomycoses were examined for causative fungi. Of these cases 768 (17.9%) were suspected as tinea corporis (427 cases) and tinea cruris (341 cases). Twenty two different nationalities were represented. Both sexes were involved and the age range was 19 days to 70 years. Of the 768 patients examined, 738 (96.1%) had their diagnosis confirmed by direct microscopy and in 631 of these positive cases the etiology was determined. Of the 408 patients who had suffered from tinea corporis, 323 isolates were

Microsporum gypseum complex is a group of geophillic dermatophytes with a worldwide distribution and is a rare cause of dermatomycoses in humans. The infection most commonly presents as tinea corporis, with some geographical and occupational variations. We studied M. gypseum complex infections in patients examined in the Mycological Laboratory of the Department of Dermatovenereology, University Medical Centre Ljubljana, during the period 2000-2015. Diagnosis was confirmed by mycological examination. Skin scales were examined by direct microscopy and cultivated on Sabouraud glucose agar. A tota

Ergosterol is a specific sterol component of yeast and fungal membranes. Its biosynthesis is one of the most effective targets for antifungal treatments. However, the emergent resistance to multiple sterol-based antifungal drugs emphasizes the need for new therapeutic approaches. The allylamine terbinafine, which selectively inhibits squalene epoxidase Erg1 within the ergosterol biosynthetic pathway, is mainly used to treat dermatomycoses, whereas its effectiveness in other fungal infections is limited. Given that ergosterol biosynthesis depends on iron as an essential cofactor, in this report

BACKGROUND: Dermatomycoses caused by non-dermatophyte filamentous fungi are rare infections, except for onychomycosis, whose prevalence has increased over the past few years. Among these etiologic agents, we highlight Scytalidium dimidiatum and S. hyalinum, emergent fungi that cause mycoses that affect the nails and skin.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of onychomycosis and other mycoses caused by the fungi Scytalidium spp, using sex, age and site of infection as parameters.
METHODS: Eighty-one samples were evaluated showing positive culture for Scytalidium spp, obtained from 7

A descriptive epidemiologic study was conducted to quantitate the occurrence of zoonoses in pet animals (almost exclusively dogs and cats) at 30 Air Force bases in nine regions of the United States during 1980 and 1981. Reviews of reported cases of pet-associated zoonoses in humans at these bases were included. Occurrence of a zoonotic disease in dogs and cats was expressed as a ratio of reported cases per 100 rabies vaccinations (cs/Crv). Overall, the four zoonoses reported most frequently from these pets were hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and fleas. Annual ratios revealed geographic vari

BACKGROUND: Fungal infection of animals or humans are common all over the world. Some of microorganisms like fungi, exist on the skin and can be transmitted onto other individuals, other animal species or even humans and cause skin infections. Moreover, they can be the causative agents of severe generalized infections especially in immunocompromised individuals. The study aimed to evaluate the most frequent etiological agents of skin diseases and to compare the prevalence of animal fungal infections in Poland, and to discuss the possibility of transmission to humans in Poland.
RESULTS: The ob

The deep mycoses are uncommon in our setting. These fungal infections occur mainly in immunosuppressed patients or in tropical climates, and include subcutaneous infections and systemic infections. The skin is always involved in the former. In the first part of this review, we describe the main subcutaneous mycoses: sporotrichosis, chromoblastomycosis, mycetoma, phaeohyphomycosis, hyalohyphomycosis, and lacaziosis. Early recognition and treatment is important, as these infections are frequently associated with high morbidity.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous lesions are a common manifestation of disseminated coccidioidomycosis, which has increasing prevalence in endemic regions. The clinical and histologic features may be more variable than is currently recognized.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical and histologic findings from a large series of disseminated coccidioidomycosis cases in the southwestern United States.
METHODS: Histologic materials and clinical records for all biopsy-positive cases (1975-2006) from three medical centers in Arizona were reviewed.
RESULTS: Patterns of inflammation were generally granuloma

A 40-year-old male agricultural laborer presented to our clinic with asymptomatic swellings on his left hand and left leg of 2 years' duration. A pea-sized swelling was first noticed on the back of the left hand, which was gradual in onset and slowly progressed to its present size. The patient later noticed multiple swellings over his left leg and thigh, with a similar progression. There was no history suggestive of inflammatory changes or discharge from the lesions. There was no previous history of trauma. The patient was an asthmatic and was on long-term oral steroid therapy (10-20 mg/day pr

A delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response to a dermatophyte antigen is one of the host defense mechanisms. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with dermatophytosis produce a high level of IFN-gamma in response to stimulation with trichophytin. The presence of IFN-gamma mRNA in skin lesions of dermatophytosis was detected using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. IFN-gamma-positive cells were observed immunohistochemically in the upper dermis of the skin lesions. These findings support the hypothesis that the skin lesions of dermatophytosis are associated with a T
