Intracranial dermoid cyst in Goldenhar's syndrome. Case report.

A patient with Goldenhar's syndrome and an ipsilateral intracranial dermoid cyst is reported. It is suggested that the combination of both entities may not be coincidental but due to their related embryological origin. This report also reemphasizes the value of computerized tomography in the preoperative diagnosis of intracranial dermoid cysts.

Pulmonary dermoid cyst mimicking hydatid cyst: a case report with literature review.

Intrapulmonary dermoid cyst (mature cystic teratoma) is rare and may mimic common cystic lung diseases, particularly pulmonary hydatid disease. A 26-year-old woman presented with dyspnea and left-sided chest, shoulder, and neck pain. Computed tomography demonstrated a large complex cystic lesion in the left upper lobe with gas locules and associated pleural and pericardial effusions, initially suggesting a hydatid cyst. Video-assisted thoracoscopic excision revealed hair and heterogeneous cyst contents, and histopathology showed mature tissues from multiple germ layers with xanthogranulomatous

Multiple low (fat) attenuating lesions associated with an intracranial dermoid cyst: multiple dermoids or cyst rupture? A case report.

A 48-year-old female patient was operated on for a right frontal dermoid cyst. CT scans before and 2 years after the operation demonstrated identical multiple low-density lesions, in the subarachnoid space as well as in the brain tissue. Multiplicity of dermoid cysts is postulated.

Giant intracranial dermoid cyst: Case report and review of the literature on intracranial dermoids and epidermoids.

A 45-year old man was referred to the Johns Hopkins Hospital with a seven-year history of repeated episodes of light-headedness, increasing irriability and forgetfulness. Examinations revealed a right superior, incongruous quadrantanopsia. EEG showed an abnormality in the left temporal lobe, and a cerebral angiogram outlined an avascular mass in the left cerebral hemisphere. At operation, the patient was found to have a giant dermoid cyst involving the left frontal, temporal and parietal lobes. Over the last 30 years we have encountered only 6 cases of intracranial epidermoids and 3 cases of i

The expression of cytokeratin in keratocystic odontogenic tumor, orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst, dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst and dermoid cyst.

The epithelial lining of odontogenic keratocysts exhibits either parakeratosis or orthokeratosis. In 2005, the WHO classified odontogenic keratocysts with parakeratosis as keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOT). Odontogenic keratocysts with orthokeratosis were not classified as odontogenic tumors, but instead referred to as orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOC). To clarify the difference between these two lesions, we investigated their biological characteristics using immunohistochemical studies for cytokeratins (CK) in KCOT and OOC as well as in dentigerous cysts (DC), radicular cysts (RC)

Evolution of epidermoid cyst into dermoid cyst: Embryological explanation and radiological-pathological correlation.

Intracranial dermoid and epidermoid cysts are usually considered to be two different entities in the radiological and surgical literature. Epidermoid cysts are classically off midline in location, isointense to cerebrospinal fluid on T1 and T2-weighted images and have restricted diffusion, whereas dermoid cysts are classically midline in location, have T1-hyperintense regions due to the presence of fat and show facilitated diffusion. We report a case of radiological epidermoid cyst in baseline imaging, which evolved into a radiological dermoid cyst over time, and explain this unique occurrence

The Exoscope in the Excision of Medial Orbital Dermoid Cysts.

Orbital dermoid cysts are the most common orbital tumors in childhood. Although typically superficial and lateral, uncommon medial lesions may pose surgical challenges due to proximity to critical structures. The exoscope offers high-definition, 3-dimensional visualization and ergonomic advantages to surgeons in these complex anatomical cases. A 4-year-old patient presented with progressive globe displacement and fullness of the right upper lid. Imaging revealed a 1.7 × 1.3 cm circumscribed lesion in the superior medial orbit, displacing the globe and abutting the superior rectus muscle. The p

Dermoid cysts of the cavernous sinus: a systematic review.

Dermoid cysts in the cavernous sinus (CSDCs) are scarce, and their key features are largely unknown. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines up to March 2025, using PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Actual CSDCs with sufficient available information were selected. An additional case from the authors' series was included. Data collected included age, gender, CSDC size, symptoms, duration from symptom onset, physical findings, radiological features, treatment, and outcomes. Thirty-eight cases were analyzed (37 from databases plus the author's case). Headache and diplopia

A series of ruptured dermoid cysts in pediatric patients.

Ruptured dermoid cysts can often have atypical presentations and be challenging to manage. We report 3 cases of pediatric patients with ruptured dermoid cysts. Case 1 was a 16-year-old boy with an enlarging left superotemporal orbital mass who presented with 2 days of acute inflammation. Computed tomography revealed a well-circumscribed lesion that was excised. Histopathology confirmed a ruptured dermoid cyst. Case 2 was a 4-year-old girl with a right superotemporal orbital mass that enlarged following trauma. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a bilobed dermoid, and excision confirmed prior

Surgical Management of 2350 Pediatric Dermoid Cysts.

BACKGROUND: The authors examined operative and pathologic findings of a large series of dermoid cysts at a high-volume pediatric hospital over 23 years. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of all dermoid cysts excised from 2000 to 2023 at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Lesions were classified by location. Depth was stratified into type 1, superficial; type 2, subperiosteal or containing a stalk to a cranial suture; type 3, intraosseous or intracartilaginous; type 4, intracranial extradural; and type 5, intracranial intradural. RESULTS: Of 2350 lesions, 2237 (95.2%) were i

Challenges in Diagnosing Dermoid Cyst in a Neurocognitive Patient.

This case report presents a unique and challenging scenario involving the diagnosis and management of a sublingual dermoid cyst in a 12-year-old male with autism disorder. Dermoid cysts within the oral cavity are exceptionally rare entities, constituting less than 0.01% of all oral cavity cysts. In addition, their co-occurrence with neurocognitive disorders further complicates the diagnostic process. The patient's clinical presentation was marked by recurrent epistaxis and behavioral changes, which were compounded by his communication limitations due to autism disorder. A thorough physical exa

Dermoid Cyst of Tongue Masquerading as a Lingual Neurofibroma.

Dermoid cysts of the tongue are rare lesions of the head-and-neck region with only 16 reported cases in the English literature to date. We describe a 5-year-old girl who presented with a swelling in her tongue. Imaging done earlier was reported as a neurofibroma. It turned out to be a dermoid cyst. This was the first such case at our institute and this article reviews the literature and describes the said case in detail.

Bilateral orbital dermoid cysts: A case report.

Dermoid cysts are one of the most common benign orbital tumours in children and usually occur unilaterally. Bilateral dermoid cysts in the orbit are rare. We report here, a case of bilateral orbital dermoid cysts, in a 29-month-old baby girl. The patient's prognosis was favourable following surgical resection. Through this case report, we hope to increase the recognition and understanding of this condition.

An Unusual Presentation of Spontaneous Rupture of Dermoid Cyst.

Intracranial dermoid cysts are exceptionally rare tumors. Interestingly, this condition has a low mortality rate but a high morbidity rate due to its numerous complications. We report a case of a 62-year-old man who presented with a headache and was found to have a ruptured dermoid cyst, complicated with the dissemination of lipid droplets within the subarachnoid space.

Risk of Intracranial Extension of Craniofacial Dermoid Cysts.

BACKGROUND: Dermoid cysts are benign lesions lined by keratinizing squamous epithelium that also contain epidermal adnexa (hair follicles, hair shafts, sebaceous glands, and both apocrine and eccrine sweat glands) and mesodermal derivatives (smooth muscle fibers, vascular stroma, nerves, and collagen fibers). Craniofacial dermoid cysts represent approximately 7 percent of all dermoids and have an incidence ranging between 0.03 and 0.14 percent. METHODS: The authors conducted a single-center, consecutive, nonrandomized comparative case series over a 20-year period of all patients treated surgi

An Unusual Presentation of a Dermoid Cyst Mimicking a Chalazion.

The authors report the case of a 6-year-old boy who presented to their outpatient department with complaints of progressively increasing swelling on the left upper eyelid since birth. The swelling was excised and was found to be firmly attached to the tarsus. Histopatho-logical examination reported a cyst lined by stratified squamous epithelium with presence of adnexal structures in the subepithelium. Therefore, the diagnosis of tarsal dermoid cyst was made. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2020;57:e41-e42.].

Intracranial complications of midline nasal dermoid cysts.

BACKGROUND: Nasal dermoid cysts are common tumors in children. Due to anomalies in embryologic development of the nasal complex, sometimes an intracranial extension exists. When these cysts become infected they can lead to meningitis, brain abscess and death. METHODS: We report the case of a 1.5-year-old girl admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit after infection of a nasal dermoid cyst. RESULTS: The infant had a spiking fever and epileptic seizures. She was stabilized, intubated and a CT scan showed a subcutaneous mass with an adjacent zone of encephalitis and brain abscess formatio

Midline approach to pediatric nasofrontal dermoid cysts.

IMPORTANCE: To highlight the advantages of the vertical midline incision in providing satisfactory cosmesis with complete excision of pediatric nasofrontal dermoid cysts. OBSERVATIONS: Retrospective case series of nasofrontal dermoid cysts in 4 patients treated at a single tertiary medical center from June 1, 2010, through July 31, 2012. The mean age at surgery was 2.5 years. The anatomical location of the nasofrontal dermoid cysts differed: (1) supratip extending through the upper lateral cartilages to the cartilaginous septum, (2) upper dorsum and subcutaneous tissue, (3) tip and supratip e
