Of 120 pathological gamblers randomly allocated to imaginal desensitisation (ID) or to other behavioural procedures (60 to each group, all procedures administered over one week) 63 subjects were contacted two to nine years later. Twenty-six of the 33 who received ID reported control or cessation of gambling compared with 16 of 30 who received other behavioural procedures. This difference was significant, indicating ID had a specific effect additional to that of the other behavioural procedures. It is suggested the other procedures could be regarded as placebos. As the response at a mean of ove

Seven cases of nightmare were treated by simple rehearsal of the nightmare and/or rehearsal with an altered ending, followed by earlier introduction of the ending. One-year follow-up of five patients showed complete relief from nightmares in the four patients who achieved early introduction of a 'masterful' ending, and marked improvement in the patient who could only imagine a neutral ending. All but one of the patients also presented with neurotic symptoms (anxiety, phobias, depression and compulsion/obsession). These were treated by rational discussion and the formulation of positive 'threat

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent and often disabling condition. Fortunately, effective psychological treatments for PTSD are available. However, research indicates that these treatments may be underutilized in clinical practice. One reason for this underutilization may be clinicians' unwarranted exclusion of patients from these treatments based on their understanding of exclusion criteria used in clinical trials of psychological treatments for PTSD. There is no comprehensive and up-to-date review of inclusion and exclusion criteria used in randomized clinical tria

BACKGROUND: A common disorder among women during reproductive age is dysmenorrhea. It has a chronic cyclic nature and a positive association with psychological distress.
AIM: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of desensitization based on eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) on dysmenorrhea intensity.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial comprising 88 female university students randomly divided in two groups of intervention (EMDR therapy for two 60-min sessions, and control) was conducted based on the balanced blocks randomization method. The main outco

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Imaginal Exposure (IE), and Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) are effective trauma-focused interventions. However, concerns persist that they may impair the accuracy of memories addressed in treatment. This laboratory study tested whether a single session of EMDR, IE, or ImRs affects forced-choice recognition in healthy adults. Two hundred sixty-five participants underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and received EMDR, IE, ImRs, or no intervention (NIC) the following day. One week later, memory for the TSST was assessed using a forced-choi

Diagnostic criteria for stress reactions and adjustment disorders are summarized. Existing psychological treatments are outlined with a focus on evidence-based methods, and recommendations for treatment are described. The conclusion is that there is no evidence for the effect of psychological debriefing or other professional treatment in the immediate aftermath of traumatic events. On the other hand, cognitive behavioural therapy, EMDR and similar methods with focus on exposure can be recommended, both as a preventive strategy and for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.

There are several predictors of suicidality in patients with panic disorder (PD). Being a woman, younger age, low education level, unmarried status, and symptom severity have been suggested. This study aimed to examine whether early trauma is associated with suicidal ideation in patients with PD. Our study included 267 patients with PD and 105 controls. Data on sociodemographic variables and data from the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form, Beck Depression Inventory, Panic Disorder Severity Scale, Anxiety Sensitivity Inventory-Revised, Coping Scales, and Scale for Suicide Ideation w

Stimulation of 5-HT2 receptors in mammals by agonists causes detrimental neurological, psychological, and circulatory effects. 5-HT2 antagonists block the elicited effects, but by themselves, they do not cause any apparent behavioral, neurological or subjective effects. However, 5-HT2 antagonists increase slow wave sleep and have a therapeutic action on impaired circulation, dysthymia, and negative symptoms in schizophrenia. Chronic treatment of rodents with various 5-HT2 antagonists was reported to cause an anomalous desensitization and 5-HT2 receptor down regulation. In this study we further

Experiencing a traumatic event may initiate or exacerbate the occurrence of nightmares. Nightmares may impact sleep quality and quantity, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and depression. Recently, imagery rehearsal has gained attention in the treatment of trauma-related nightmares and is reported to be promising in the reduction of nightmares. On the basis of the vast literature describing the therapeutic benefits of exposure techniques for anxiety-related problems, the treatment was modified to enhance the exposure component. This article presents a case series using this modified version of im

Stimulus fading in the form of gradually increased exposure to a fear-evoking stimulus, often combined with differential reinforcement, has been used to treat phobias in children who are otherwise normal and in children with autism. In this investigation, we applied stimulus fading plus differential reinforcement with an adolescent with autism and diabetes whose needle phobia had prevented medical monitoring of his blood glucose levels for over 2 years. Results showed that the treatment was successful in obtaining daily blood samples for measuring glucose levels.

Different types of treatment have been used in trying to reduce dental anxiety in adult patients with severe fear and avoidance behavior. However, there is an obvious shortage in long-term treatment follow-up. The present investigation reports results over a period of 10 yr of 14 patients treated for dental fear in a specialized dental fear treatment and research clinic. The aims of this project were to evaluate patients' regularity in dental behavior between 1977 and 1987, changes in and present level of dental fear and other long-standing positive/negative effects of the respective initial t

This paper discusses the necessity of using both behavioral and family approaches in combination, while working with electively mute children. The symptom and its significance within the family system is presented along with a rationale for avoiding the pitfalls of individual approaches with such children. A case history outlining specific behavioral techniques is described in detail with an exploration of the use of reinforcement theory, counter-conditioning, and successive approximations in bringing about change in electively mute children. The need for bringing about changes within the fami

Stress is ubiquitous in our modern society and contributes to many disease states. This narrative review describes the effect of stress/distress on cancer development and progression. Seminal randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews/meta-analyses, and distress management guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the Society for Integrative LinearOncology (SIO) are highlighted. We describe the physiological effects of distress, distress assessment, and management. Psychological treatments are summarized. Evide

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Visually induced dizziness (VID) is a common phenomenon in vestibular disorders of both peripheral and central causes. This article provides a review of the most updated understandings of definition, pathophysiology, and treatment options.
RECENT FINDINGS: The pathophysiology is complex and its severity or persistence may be related both to the underlying cause and heritable factors. Environmental and psychological factors may influence the degree of impact of VID on daily life function. Treatment is mostly empiric at this point but includes pharmacologic, desensitization,

Improved efficacy in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other anxiety disorders is urgently needed. Traditional anxiety treatments of hypnosis and psychodynamic therapy may be of some help, but uncontrolled studies lead to inconclusive results on the efficacy of these treatment techniques. There is a larger literature supporting the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral procedures with PTSD, including prolonged exposure therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and anxiety management techniques. The cutting-edge technology of virtual reality-based exposure thera

Relocation and housing transitions are routine in captive settings, including biomedical facilities, and can negatively affect welfare by increasing restriction and reducing control. This study tested whether desensitization to human activity reduces fear and reactivity in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) during indoor husbandry procedures. Fifty-six macaques were assigned to a treatment group receiving structured desensitization training (mean ± SE: 8.4 ± 3.4 sessions) or to a control group with no training. Fear and behavioral reactivity were assessed using a modified Human Intruder Test (mH

BACKGROUND: Wildlife rehabilitation is crucial for the recovery of injured endangered species; however, this process can induce significant stress, potentially leading to secondary injuries and complications. This case report details the rehabilitation of two severely injured Formosan black bears (Ursus thibetanus formosanus) with desensitization techniques as an alternative approach to reducing stress while promoting voluntary cooperation during treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: Patient 1 was an adult female bear with injuries, including the loss of the second, third and fourth phalanges of the
