High-Fructose, High-Fat Diet Alters Muscle Composition and Fuel Utilization in a Juvenile Iberian Pig Model of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a serious metabolic condition affecting millions of people worldwide. A "Western-style diet" has been shown to induce pediatric NAFLD with the potential disruption of skeletal muscle composition and metabolism. To determine the in vivo effect of a "Western-style diet" on pediatric skeletal muscle fiber type and fuel utilization, 28 juvenile Iberian pigs were fed either a control diet (CON) or a high-fructose, high-fat diet (HFF), with or without probiotic supplementation, for 10 weeks. The HFF diets increased the total triacylglycerol content of mus

Safety and tolerability of a low glycemic load dietary intervention in adults with cystic fibrosis: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: To achieve and maintain adequate weight, people with cystic fibrosis (CF) May often consume energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods high in added sugars and refined carbohydrates; however, little is known about the glycemic and metabolic effects of dietary composition in this patient population. The objective of this pilot study was to investigate the safety and tolerability of a low glycemic load (LGL) diet in adults with CF and abnormal glucose tolerance (AGT). METHODS: Ten adults with CF and AGT completed this prospective, open-label pilot study. Mean age was 27.0 ± 2.1 years, 64%

Proanthocyanidins Limit Adipose Accrual Induced by a Cafeteria Diet, Several Weeks after the End of the Treatment.

A dose of proanthocyanidins with satiating properties proved to be able to limit body weight increase several weeks after administration under exposure to a cafeteria diet. Here we describe some of the molecular targets and the duration of the effects. We treated rats with 500 mg grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE)/kg BW for ten days. Seven or seventeen weeks after the last GSPE dose, while animals were on a cafeteria diet, we used reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to measure the mRNA of the key energy metabolism enzymes from the liver, adipose depots and muscle.

The effectiveness of preoperative oral carbohydrate loading on postoperative nausea and vomiting in adults receiving total intravenous anaesthesia compared to inhalational anaesthesia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative oral carbohydrate loading is thought to reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). However, it is unknown if the benefit of carbohydrate loading is maintained in the presence of total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA). The aim of this systematic review was to determine whether oral carbohydrate loading reduced PONV compared to overnight fasting between adult elective surgery patients receiving TIVA or inhalational general anaesthesia. METHODS: A search of seven databases was conducted until March 2024. Randomised controlled trials conducted with patient aged 18 yea

Effect of a High-sucrose Diet on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Development in a Hypoperfusion-induced Animal Model.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a vascular disease that results in rupture of the abdominal aorta. The risk factors for the development of AAA include smoking, male sex, hypertension, and age. AAA has a high mortality rate, but therapy for AAA is restricted to surgery in cases of large aneurysms. Clarifying the effect of dietary food on the development of AAA would be helpful for patients with AAAs. However, the relationship between dietary habits and the development of AAA is largely unknown. In our previous study, we demonstrated that adipocytes in vascular wall can induce the rupture of

[Training program for rehabilitation of patients with internal diseases].

Physical training for patients with internal diseases differs in many points to the physical activity recommended for health maintenance. Cardiac patients are usually limited by symptoms (angina, ECG abnormalities, anaerobic threshold) therefore the intensity of the training (monitored by heart rate or ECG) must be setted by an ergometer exercise testing. Patients with obliterative peripheral artery disease may surpass the local anaerobic threshold during interval-type loads. Blood pressure limits the training intensity of the hypertensive patients if not an organ lesion. COPD patients use the

New interpretations in rhinosporidiosis, enigmatic disease of the last nine decades.

Fungal etiology is widely quoted for the disease rhinosporidiosis. Identity of the fungal sporangium and its relationship with the disease have baffled medical scientists and mycologists for several decades. This study provides unequivocal evidence against involvement of fungus in rhinosporidiosis. The so-called sporangium is found to be a unique body containing residue-loaded lysosomal bodies ('spores') for elimination from the system. 'Sporangia' have been redesignated nodular bodies (NB) and 'spores' as spheres of cellular waste (scw). Two carbohydrates, namely defective proteoglycans synth

Inhibition of the glycaemic response by onion: a comparison between lactose-tolerant and lactose-intolerant adults.

This pilot study compared inhibition of the glycaemic response to glucose by a dietary source of quercetin glucosides (onion) in lactose-tolerant adults (n=12) and lactose-intolerant adults (n=12). We hypothesised that lactose-intolerant people (who do not express lactase) will retain intact quercetin glucosides that can inhibit glucose uptake via the glucose transporter SGLT1, whereas lactose-tolerant people (who do express lactase) will hydrolyse quercetin glucosides to free quercetin that does not inhibit glucose uptake. In a glucose tolerance test, reduction in peak glucose levels by an on

Use of Advanced Hybrid Closed-Loop System during Pregnancy: Strengths and Limitations of Achieving a Tight Glycemic Control.

Background: Pregnant women with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) face an elevated risk of complications for both themselves and their newborns. Experts recommend strict glycemic control. The advanced hybrid closed-loop (AHCL) system, though not officially approved for pregnant T1DM patients, is promising for optimal glycemic control. Methods: We collected CGM metrics, HbA1c levels, insulin pump settings, and doses from a 33-year-old pregnant woman with 23-year history of T1DM from the 6th week of gestation to birth. She was initially on continuous insulin pump therapy with CGM and switched to t

Effect of long-term, peroral administration of sugar alcohols on man.

Certain sugar alcohols (polyols), notably mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol have gained use in food manufacturing for sweetening and technical purposes. These compounds are natural polyols that occur in small amounts in animals and plants. Some sugar alcohols, like xylitol, appear as normal intermediates in the carbohydrate metabolism. Exogenous mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol are metabolized in the human body along pre-existing, physiological pathways. Moderate doses of least xylitol and sorbitol are almost totally absorbed and metabolized, chiefly in the liver cells, thereby eventually contribut

Gut virome orchestrates nitrogen partitioning between the host and microbiome.

Dietary protein is essential for host growth and nitrogen homeostasis. How dietary protein shapes intestinal phage-bacteria interactions and influences the translation of dietary cues into host physiological outcomes remains poorly understood. We show that low-protein diet (LPD) substantially remodels the murine gut virome by altering phage-bacteria dynamics. Under LPD, nutritional stress suppresses bacterial phage release without altering the predicted proportion of lysogenic phages, leading to reduced free phage abundance and weaker bacterial lysis. Lysogenic phages carrying carbohydrate-rel

Review article: fungal alterations in inflammatory bowel diseases.

BACKGROUND: Emerging data suggest that alterations in gut fungi may be associated with the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In healthy individuals, gut commensal fungi act synergistically with other members of the microbiota to maintain homeostasis but their role in IBD is less clear. AIM: To review the role of gut fungi and their trans-kingdom interactions with bacteria in IBD METHODS: A literature search was conducted on Ovid and Pubmed to select relevant animal and human studies that have reported fungi and IBD. RESULTS: There is an increased total fungal load particularl

Higher dietary glycemic index, but not glycemic load, is associated with increased risk of ulcerative colitis: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Total carbohydrate intake has been inconsistently associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) risk in previous epidemiological studies. We aimed to evaluate the effects of glycemic index and glycemic load, 2 main indicators for measuring the quality and quantity of carbohydrates, on the risk of IBD subtypes (ie, Crohn's disease [CD] and ulcerative colitis [UC]). METHODS: We included 121 148 UK Biobank participants without IBD at baseline, and collected dietary information from a validated web-based 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire. Overall dietary glycemic index

Targeting soluble tumor necrosis factor as a potential intervention to lower risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Insulin impairment and inflammation are two features common to type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease; however, the molecular and signaling interactions underlying this relationship are not well understood. Mounting evidence point to the associations between the disruption of metabolite processing in insulin impairment and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's. Although the brain depends partially on metabolites processed in the periphery, to date, little is known about how soluble tumor necrosis factor signaling (solTNF) impacts integrated peripheral immune and metabol

Renal regulation of plasma glucose in the freshwater rainbow trout.

This study examined the effects of prolonged hyperglycemia on renal handling of glucose and explored the in vivo pharmacological effects of phlorizin on glucose transport in the rainbow trout. The transport of glucose was examined by experimentally elevating the rate of renal glucose reabsorption via infusion of the fish with exogenous glucose at a rate of 70 micromol kg(-1) h(-1) and by inactivating the glucose transporters via the simultaneous administration of phlorizin (1 micromol kg(-1) h(-1)). Glucose was reabsorbed against a concentration gradient, until plasma glucose levels reached ap

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Versus Standard Postoperative Care in Elective Craniotomy for Brain Tumor Excision: A Comprehensive Review of Protocol Differences, Clinical Outcomes, and Implementation Challenges.

Standard postoperative care following elective craniotomy traditionally includes close monitoring in an ICU setting, use of opioid-based analgesia, delayed initiation of oral intake, and prolonged bed rest. These practices may contribute to a longer recovery period, a higher risk of complications such as infections or deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and lower patient satisfaction. On the other hand, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols offer a more structured and proactive approach. It incorporates preoperative counseling, carbohydrate loading (if appropriate), avoidance of prolonged f
